I have the mirena iud and was currently put on antibiotics for a sinus infection. Do I need to use a backup form of protection since I am on the antibiotics like you would need to do when you take birth control pills?

What can I do next?

I would call your OB to be on the safe side unless you would not mind a
surprise! Why chance it.

No, you are safe.

Antibiotics interfere with the way that birth control pills are absorbed and processed by your body. Since mirena isn't an oral contraceptive, antibiotics won't affect it.

I just went thru this too. My dr said YES - use a back up plan for the time you're on antibiotics and then 3 days PAST when you finish. I have the mirena too. Hope you feel better soon!

I dont think so. The pill is different from Mirena as far as it's not a constant influx of hormones into your system. But to be 100% I'd call your OB, why take any chances!?

You should be fine. Mirena is totally different than the pill. It doesn't work on your cycle like the pill or anything, it's not even estrogen. I've had it for 31/2 years, there's no warning about anti-biotics and I've never had a problem.
