Am I Having a Miscarriage on Nuvaring??

I have two children, the oldest is 5. I've never had a miscarriage so I am not familiar with the symptoms. I've been on nuvaring for about 7 months and each month I will have very light spotting that is brown and never calls for more than a pantyliner. I haven't had cramps in 6 years (stopped having monthly cramps once I was pregnant w/ my first child).
I started my period about three days ago and it has been extremely heavy and I've been passing a lot of large red clots. I've had cramps for the past two days and they were painful enough that I had to take tylenol to help w/ the pain. Could I have been pregnant? I haven't had any pregnancy symptoms that I can think of so if it's a miscarriage I couldn't have been far along. My husband and I are extremely fertile so if someone could get pregnant on the nuvaring it would be us.
Could this be a miscarriage or does your body just naturally "clean house" after basically having no period for a few months on the nuvaring? Would a pregnancy test be able to detect hcg levels to let me know if I am having one? I don't know if I should go to the doctor or not but I would hate to go if it's just a regular period.

Is anyone familiar w/ any of this? All responses are very much appreciated.

What can I do next?

I haven't been on Nuvaring but I take Seasonale. Most of the time I have very light periods and probably once of year a wrath of god period. I think it is just a spring cleaning kind of thing. My doctor laughed when I mentioned it and said it was normal.

I'm pretty sure a pregnancy test would still come out positive if you are infact having a miscarriage. I think your body is just "Cleaning House" but it would not hurt to take a preg test just to be sure. Dollar stores have very accurate tests. Good luck and I do hope your feeling better soon.

I have no idea what's going on. But you shouldn't hesitate to call your OB's office about something like this.
You'll feel better after you talk with a nurse.
All the best!

Miscarriage is a possibility. If your period was actually late then you might get a positive result with an early pregnancy test. I don't really see any need to seek medical attention today, but if more symptoms arise like heavy bleeding more than 7 days, abdominal pain or pregnancy symptoms PLEASE SEE YOUR DOCTOR/NURSE MIDWIFE. Ectopic pregnancy is slightly more likely when conceiving while on a hormonal contraception method. Nurse Midwife Mom

I wouldn't think that a heavy, on-time, period while on an estrogen based birth control means miscarriage, but I guess it could. Depending on how "large" the clots your talking about are, they're probably normal... and clotting isn't related to miscarriage... just to bleeding.

Hormonal birth control can (as you know) dramatically change your natural cycle and flow. You've already experienced it making you have little to no period... now you're having a heavier period. I'd say it's all within the realm of possibility.

If you're worried about it you could give your doctor a call. But unless you're soaking through more than "a pad and hour" it isn't generally considered "too much" bleeding.

Even if you ARE having a miscarriage (which I lean toward doubting since Nuvaring works by preventing ovulation just like the pill) you don't need to go to the doctor unless there are worrying symptoms (like the more than a pad an hour thing).

Again though, if you're worried call the doctor. At the very least it will ease your mind.

I.U.D.'s are notorius for both very little & alot of bleeding either/or, you can only be sure if things are working as they should by going in to see your Gyn., this REALLY becomes important IF you have miscarried.

Best to you!

It may mean miscarriage but it may not. It could be your body flushing out and having that once-in-a-while big period that can happen when on this type of birth control. I'm on Mirena, and while I haven't had a period in quite a while, I do get ovulation cramps and a bit of cramping around the time I'm supposed to get my period. I also figure that although I do spot once or twice a year, I'm probably due for a period such as you're describing.

That all said, trust your instincts and because this is abnormal FOR YOU based on your specific situation I would call your OB/GYN and request a check-up, especially on the off chance that there's something going on with your Nuvaring Rx.
