My guy does 4 bottles of formula a day, solids 3 times...doesn't sound like u r too far off. Oh and his bottles are 6 oz...and he usually drinks every bit of each bottle.
Hello. I have a 9 month old boy. I am a first time mom and feel confused about how much he should eat per day. He is a big boy! I feel I am responsible for that:) He is about 25 lbs!!! He is long though and he doesn't look chunky except his thighs:) I feed him formula (soy) and baby food and a few finger foods. He usually has 5 bottles a day which i am hearing is too much? He usually eats solids 3 times a day. Can anyone tell me what they're doing with their 9 month old? I have my 9 mo. peds appt tomorrow but usually time is limited. Thanks!

Hi! My son will be 10 months old next week... He seems pretty much on the same track. He's 22 pnds. 13 oz... I was expecting a lecture today, but they said he's right on target. (some pediatricians are on a witch hunt about childhood obesity... they are against giving babies juice, etc...)
My son gets a few bottles a day (usually at nap times and bed time)... gets fed solids at least 3 times a day (plus little bits of whatever we're eating)... my parents are always giving him ice cream, etc... He'd eat around the clock if we let him!
I'd say the only thing you might want to check out is the soy... I had to stop eating it because it was affecting my thyroid. I gained 10 pounds in a month eating soy protein bars! They seem to put it in everything now because it's cheap... I'm sure it's not a big deal for babies... but you might want to check it out.
Other than that, it sounds like he's right on track! I hear as soon as they start walking (running) they really thin out... Plus- boys just need more...
I have a nine month baby girl. She is about nineteen pounds. I breast feed so it's hard to figure out how much she is getting there but for her solids I give her three meals plus snacks. She eats two ounces of cereal and somewhere between one or one half of a container (four ounce) of baby food at a sitting.
Can babies overeat? You can always replace one of the bottles with water instead of formula but he doesn't sound overweight. Good luck.
My "little" guy is 8 months. He was almost 21 pounds at his 6 month check up. He was 9 lbs 10 ozs at birth, so he had a good start! :-)
We didn't start solids until 6 months. Then we started out with just cereal once a day. We now feed him cereal in the morning, a jar of fruit at "lunch time" and a jar of veggies at dinner. He takes a bottle, usually about 8 ounces when he first wakes up, then two more bottles before bed. He doesn't drink the whole 8 ounces usually now. Then before bed, he'll have part of a bottle. Sometimes he drinks it all, sometimes 4 ozs, sometimes 6.
Our ped has told us that the formula should still be the main form of nutrition. The solids are just added basically so they learn how to chew/eat. They are not as important as the formula. They get everything they need from it.
I think you're doing everything right. :-) BTW, no matter how many kids you have (I have 4) you always doubt yourself, at least I do.
My son is 10 months old and thats just about exactly what he eats 5-6 bottles with 5oz soy milk and 3-4 jars baby food he isnt eating finger foods yet just puffs (no teeth) I think your doing good hes just a big boy my son weighed 21 at 9 months. I dont think you have anything to worry about.
My son will be 10 months next week and he's eating anywhere from 4-6 6 ounce bottles per day. He also gets 50% water 50% juice at snacktimes and sometimes water in a bottle or sippie at home.
He is pretty much over the baby food stage but will eat anything I put on his plate. He will sometimes have eggs or puffs at home then I'll take him to daycare and he'll have toast or pancakes or a poptart. Then he'll have a snack and lunch and another snack before I pick him up. For dinner, he can really tear it up! He usually has puffs or cheerios while I"m making his dinner and anywhere from 1 piece of lunchmeat (cut up), 1 egg (yolk only), 1/4 can of veggie soup, veggies or equal amount of fresh cooked veggies and a couple pieces of fruit. Last night we were at a friends house and he made a comment about how no meals get past him - he ate an entire thing of individual sized peaches, 1/2 bowl of Stage 3 (probably 1/2 jar), 2 pieces of cheese and a handful of puffs followed by 6 ounces water/juice and 4 ounces formula!! I feed him as long as he's interested and sometimes he'll eat an entire banana and his meal!
By the way he's 21 lbs and tall for his age (90%).
Sounds like you are right on track! He'd let you know if he was more hungry or less hungry by giving you signs (fussy, opening mouth, looking for food after eating = still hungry, turning away, closing mouth, spitting out food = no longer hungry or doesn't like the food).
Keep up the good work!
I feed my nine month old solids three times a day and nurse him the rest of the time. I was always told that their nutrients need to come mostly from the breast milk and formula as these are so choc full of vitamins.
What I do is make sure my son eats a balance of fruits and vegetables everyday. The breast milk and baby cereal are full of minerals and some vitamins but are lacking in vitamin A and C. I make sure he gets pureed fruit and veggies at every meal (except for breakfast 'cos who wants veggies for breakfast LOL!) He eats about two Gerber stage two plastic cartons of baby food at every meal. He nurses constantly several times a day. He eats like crazy but hes only 19lbs!
I personally don't think 5 bottles a day sounds to much. Not when his formula is so healthy and staying hydrated especially in summer is a big plus! If you were feeding him Macdonalds, fried chicken and potato chips every day then I would start worrying about his nutrition. Always offer him varied, balanced, healthy options and you really don't have to worry too much.
I picked a random day from when my baby was 9 months and checked on what he ate. (Yes, I'm crazy and kept a record!) He was much lighter than your little guy- maybe 16 pounds or so. He nursed three times that day for a total of 58 minutes- that doesn't translate well into formula ounces- sorry. For breakfast he has 4 tablespoons of baby cereal with a Gerber 2nd foods apricot puree container mixed in. For lunch he had 1 YoBaby apple yogurt, 1/4th of an avocado in pieces, a handful of puffs, and a few sips of water. (Oh yes, this is when I was stuffing him with yogurt and avocados to put weight on him...) For dinner he had a 3rd foods turkey and mixed vegetable jar, plus a handful of puffs and some water. Now my son is a year old and around 22 pounds. He eats almost the same thing, but more pieces of real food at lunch and dinner. For example, last night in addition to his jar of dinner he ate sweet potato and carrot chunks, spaghetti noodles, and cheerios. At lunch he might have a dozen blueberries now in addition to the avocado. I always bugged my doctor about how much my son should be eating. And if he wasn't specific enough, I'd say, "This is what he had yesterday, was that enough?" No matter how rushed your doctor is, he/she should be answering all your questions. That's exactly why we have well baby visits, right? If you're worried about your son's weight, just ask. I bet it's fine. All of my friends had much bigger babies than me, and those chunky legs melted away with all the crawling and walking that happens in the next few months!
