5 Month Old Sleeps a Lot During the Day

Hi. I have a 5 month old son who has been sleeping through the night (8pm - 6 am) since he was three month's old. He has recently started daycare and had been napping a LOT during the day (3, 2+ hour naps). He used to only cat nap (30-45 mins) for me throughout the day prior to daycare. I am starting to get concerned that he will stop sleeping through the night (hasn't happened yet but it's only been a couple of weeks) and he doesn't nap like that for me at home on the weekends. Not sure if this anything I should be concerned about or just let him go with the flow? Also, is he sleeping too much, if there is such a thing? and how do I get him to take longer naps at home?

What can I do next?

Well since he's in daycare I'm betting he's just so happy to see you and be with you that it's making it so he doesn't want to nap. If he's sleeping through the night he should be fine ( and you have my complete envy since my 6 month old gets up twice a night still) I say just relax. It sounds like he's got some great sleeping habits :)

I actually took my daughter to her pediatrician about sleeping too much when she was around 18 months old, because she had been doing it since she was a baby. In any given 24 hour period, she would only be awake for about 4 hours. I thought surely there had to be something wrong with her.

He told me that she's just on the very high end of a normal sleep schedule, nothing to worry about. All kids are different, she would grow out of it.

She did grow out of it, and I remember thinking at the time that I missed her, because she was always asleep! She just needed it, and when she was over it, she was over it. Now she has a pretty normal sleep schedule.

He may be growing through a growth spurt too. I'm sure everything is fine.

Hope that helps!

My concern is why he is sleeping that much in daycare......what kind of daycare? Is this a certified center or a babysitter type? Are they giving him something? Or is he just playing so much with others or being held so much by others that it wears him out?
I would not let them allow him to sleep that much......something does not sound right here to me........
Especially if he is not doing this at your house.......do the other children sleep that much? Have they checked for carbon?
I would be cautious and keep an eye out......if this continues, you might see if you can get someone to watch him for a week for you to see if the pattern changes, if it does, I'd be concerned....

Good luck and take care.

I suspect it'll take a little bit of time for him to adjust to daycare and then he'll start going back to a more normal sleep schedule. My son also started sleepign through the night, 7:30 to 6ish at 3 months. His first week or two at daycare, he would come home at 4, and fall asleep at 5 pm. There was nothing I could do to keep him awake longer during the day. But he quickly adjusted to all the activity at daycare and went back to his normal schedule. (Of course, a disrupted sleep schedule is NOT what you want to deal with when you've started working again.)

If he's been napping like this at daycare for a while, and still sleeping through the night, I really wouldn't worry about it. I don't think it's necessary to get him to take longer naps at home. When you're a mom of a baby, it's natural to think that they depend on you for everything and that you must make all decisions for them because they are not capable - but a baby does know when he is hungry and when he is tired, follow his cues. He is waking up from naptime when he has had enough sleep.

Our son is just over 5 months...I've notice over the past few weeks he is sleeping a lot during the day. I think he is going through a growth spurt or something. I say - let him sleep!!

Maybe the day care is putting him in his crib so they can get their hands free for a few minutes, and by the time they get back to him he is sleeping? IDK?

Are they writing down the times that he is sleeping? Perhaps you can keep track for a few weeks to see if he is creating his own pattern. We are going on vacation next week, when we get back I am planning on doing this so I can get a better idea of when he sleeps - because let me tell you, if I miss his "I'm tired" cues it is not fun trying to get him to go down!

Likely he is getting WAY more stimulation at daycare than he gets at home, which is exhausting for such a young baby. If there are no other issues relating to over all health and he is still sleeping through the night at home, I wouldn't worry Mom

Figure out what they do at daycare - they seem to have a system.

My 10 month old still takes 3 naps a day 1-2.5 hours each and sleeps 10-12 hours at night (waking up to eat and then back to sleep). His last nap of the day is in the early evening. Prior to this established nap routine, he would take approx. 4-5 cat naps a day. I like this much better. Sounds pretty normal from what I've experienced.
