4 Year Old Not Wanting to Use the Potty

My four year old daughter has been potty trained, only having accidents at night, for over a year now. All of a sudden, sometimes she doesn't want to go to the bathroom. With her pants on, she will just potty in her pants. I have tried getting her to tell me why, but she just says she pee-peed in her pants. She has also started doing at school. Has anyone else gone through this or having any advice?

What can I do next?

Has your daughter been through any big change recently? When my divorce started my son, also 4, started having accidents a lot. He too had been potty trained for a long time without having any accidents. I talked to his doctor about it and she said it was normal for kids to revert back during times of change. So I just dealt with it and he's doing much, much better now. This also happened with my cousin's son when he was younger and his dad got a job where he traveled a lot.

Hi K.,
It could be a lot of things, like your other responses said, it could be a big change in her life, or she may just be distracted. This happened to my niece a couple of years ago, she was about 4 also. It was from a urinary tract infection. It kept recurring. I believe one of her doctors recommended that she drink more water, instead of juice and soda.( she was getting way too much) She also wasn't wiping herself clean enough. Just something else to think about. I hope this helps. (I only have boys, and I know that sometimes things can be a lot different for girls. This is just information that I remember talking to my sister-in-law about!)

I know the frustration. Occasionally my son will be so preoccupied that he doesnt realize he needs to go until it is too late. I also noticed that my son (also 4)has had a few more accidents than usual since he began his privacy phase. He doesnt want anyone to see him naked so I am guessing that might have something to do with it. Try making her clean herself up after her accidents and she may quit.

My almost 4-year-old girl just started doing this, too. Not every day, it happens 2 or 3 times a week. I am just making her clean it up, not being mad or telling her it is bad, just reminding her to go to the bathroom b/c she is a big girl. They'll grow out of it!
