My son is almost 14 months old and is usually a pretty good sleeper at night. Even if he wakes up early, he normally sits in his crib and talks to himself until he hears me up and about. The past 3 morning's he's woken up at 5am or earlier, and hasn't gone back to sleep! WHAT GIVES?! I could cry I'm so tired right now. He has a pediatrician appointment today at 10:30 and I'll ask the doctor then, I just wanted to hear your experiences and thoughts first. Thanks ladies :)

Hi R., At around this time, we went through the same thing. Some thoughts:
1. Your son may need to start transitioning from 2 to 1 naps per day...That is, if he sleeps once in the morn and once in the aft, to slowly move it to around 11 and then 12....In this way, he will sleep longer at nite.

2. Also around this time, we found our son needed more exercise and intellectual stimulation. That is...if he is crawling...let him crawl, climb etc. if he is walking, try to make sure he gets time to do anything physical in the morn and in the aft....

3. ditto books and blocks and toys...he needs a bit of time with both.

4. snack before bed to tide him over -- oatmeal, petit beur cookie, apple, yogurt...something lite and filling.

I hope these ideas that helped us, help you.

Hi R.
Oh,Lack of sleep, one of the many joys of motherhood!!
I agree with all that Jilly says below.
Another thing to add is to check for teething. My son used to have disturbed sleep during teething.
Also I would advise you go to bed early until his normal routine settles so at least you will be getting the max. ammount of sleep you possibly can.
All the best

Everything jilly said plus this waking could also be from teething discomfort.

We'll be springing forward soon.....it may be the early light coming in the window-get blackout shades -that may help.
