14 Month Old Cries All Night

Ok mamas, my little one had a stomach virus last week and vomited for a few days and since then has stopped sleeping at night. She has never slept through the night but would always go back to sleep with a pat on the back and a binky. Since the first day of the virus however she has slept very little at night. We are on night 6 of crying non-stop from about midnight to 4 am. It isn't her normal cry...more of a whiny cry but it is incessant. If we try to put her in bed with us she just rolls and thrashes around and won't sleep and in her crib she just cries. We have taken her to Urgent Care and then the ER over the weekend as they thought perhaps her intestines were telescoping in on themselves. They aren't. She has had a full ultrasound done and is taking Zofran for nausea. Any ideas on how to get her to sleep? Is the night waking a coincidence with the illness? We are seriously sleep deprived and the desperate.

What can I do next?

I suggest that the Zofran could be causing this. I'd try not giving it. It's been a few days. She may not even be nauseous now but even if she is it won't hurt to go without it. I'm surprised the doctor gave it for a stomach bug. To do so is unusual. It's a powerful medication.

Zofran is notorious for causing headaches and constipation... both of those things can be anywhere from moderately uncomfortable to extremely painful... I'd talk to the DR about discontinuing the Zofran asap.

My daughter had a stomach virus last month. After the vomiting stopped and she started eating a little again, she was doing the same thing. She was telling me her belly hurt really bad and was laying in the floor thrashing around. As fate would have it, I caught the same virus a few days later and knew exactly what her problem was- gas. Painful, horrible gas caused by the virus. These viruses take a toll on the stomach and intestines and can take some time to get over. Anyway, that could be the culprit here.

I wonder if she has developed a little bit of acid reflux? That can be very painful for a wee one!

I agree with MamDuck. She is still having pain. I'd bet it's going to take a full 7 to 10 days to quit hurting. I had that same kind of virus after my son did two yrs ago. The pain was terrible and nothing helped it. Feed her light foods still. Heat a towel in the dryer and put it on her tummy after it cools a bit and see if it helps.

ETA - Good point, Marda...

Original:
Bless your hearts - this is tough. I wouldn't put her in bed with you, to be honest. I think you might trade one problem for another one and none of you get decent sleep.

What is she doing during the day? Is she napping during her usual times, or is she crashing? Or, is she not napping either? If she is over-tired from not napping during the day, it could be messing up her night sleep. If she's sleeping too much during the day, it could do the same thing. Hard to find that balance...

Since the doctor has cleared her, as hard as it may be I'd let her do the whiny cry until she calms herself down and sleeps. Try to keep her on her regular sleep schedule even though she's having trouble. I think that may be the best way to get her through this. Best of luck~~~

I had chemo for breast cancer. One of the side effects was severe nausa. The prescribed zofran. Made me sicker than the chemo. Turned out I was allergic. I now have a huge red sticker on all my medical charts saying allergic to zofran. She may be allergic.
