OP Regional Vs. St. Luke's South?

My doctor has privileges at OP Regional and St. Luke's South--I'm going to try to tour both facilities, but I was wondering if any of you could tell me anything good or bad about experiences at either hospital. Anyone deliver at either one? What happened? What sort of facilities do they have, and how open are they to natural childbirth options like moving around, water births, whatever? Thanks!

What can I do next?

I would say St. Luke's. I delivered at OP Regional and it was awful. Extremely breastfeeding unfriendly.

I have birthed and delivered and both and you really can't go wrong.

Pros OPR:
-Level 4 NICU - the best in the city - if you go before 34 weeks (I believe, don't quote me) any other L&D will send you there anyway
-Great Nurses
Cons OPR:
Small Mother & Baby Rooms

Pros SLS:
-HUGE rooms
-You labor, deliver, and mother in the same room
-Secured floor - only 1 elevator goes in and out and everyone visiting has to buzzed onto the floor
-Great Nurses

Again, I was happy with both hospitals! Best of luck to you and your family!

Congrats! I LOVE OPR. I had my baby 10.5 weeks early and they have the best NICU in the city. They took great care of my little guy and he is just as healthy as a term baby (so far!). I got excellent care as well, all the nurses were very attentive and kind. Sounds like you may be at risk for an preterm baby anyway, with your age and pregnancy history. I also have the names of some great perinatologists if your OBGYN recommends that. Good luck!

You can't go wrong with either. They both have excellent facilities and great nursing staffs. The only difference is that OPR has the highest level NICU. I delivered at OPR and I loved it. Congrats and good luck!

I delivered at SLS and loved it. They have tubs in every room, and other than getting on the monitor for a lil while each hour, they will let you sit in there as much as you like. They also had large exercise balls avail to sit on, and it's a locked floor where you can comfortably roam the halls during labor. There is a small kitchen area with food stocked so I could have a sandwich after a 2am delivery...great nurses...and the BEST pancakes for breakfast! :) If you're planning on breastfeeding, they have an amazing lactation staff that is available while there, and very accessible even after you leave. Every part of our experience was positive.
Best of luck!

I delievered twice at OP Regional and definitely can recommend it. The nursing staff was wonderful. For our first, I was induced and found that they were open to whatever we wanted. For our second, I was on the antepartum unit for 2 weeks, had a c-section, and our twins also spent 2 weeks in the NICU. Everyone was wonderful. OP has the highest level NICU in Jo Co, so that was definitely important to us. I also had good experiences with the lactation consultant at OP.

E.,

I had our daughter at St. Joseph, but I can highly recommend the Overland Park Regional facility. My brother Kenneth is on the nursing staff with the NICU unit. They have an excellent reputation. If god forbid anything did go wrong with your delivery the NICU team would be there for you and your family. Congratulations and best wishes!

E.-

I did not give birth at either place, but I am a doula. In my experience, I prefer St. Luke's South, though OP is also a good place. I've attended labors/births of all kinds at SLS, and the staff is always wonderful; that's why it's my preference. I've never had a mom who didn't have a good experience there.

Neither will allow a water birth, though they have tubs that you can labor in.

Hope that helps.

Hi E.,

I delivered at Op regional and they were great. They are fine with Natural child birth and had I had time to walk around I think they would have had no problem with that. The staff was great and the rooms where nice. I have no experience with St. Luke's so I cannot compare. Good luck

Congrats E.! Sounds like you are busy. I delivered at St. Lukes with my 2nd one. I had a great experience there. The nurses were great and I loved the security to get onto the floor. The rooms are nice and big too. I had an epidural, but when you go to tour, ask them all of your questions. We had a good "tour guide" and she did a great job of answering all of ours. I have had several friends deliver there too and they all loved the facility. I know of only a couple that have delivered at OP, so I can't quite say about that one. Good luck!

St. Luke's South rocked!! Their rooms are huge and new and the staff is great! I have known a few people who really like OPR but I wouldn't go there. Although I think their maternity is held to a higher standard, and like I said, many people have had positive experiences, but I would do some research on the rest of the hospital before you choose to go there.
