St. Lukes South Vs. OPRMC

I was just wondering if anyone had any advice in choosing between the two hospitals, Overland Park Regional and St. Lukes South? I delivered my first at OPRMC, and didn't have any problems really, but it's nice St. Lukes has the same room you deliver in and stay in afterward. I'm just torn and can't seem to make the decision, so was wondering if anyone else may have experiences that could help me decide. Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

Hi B. -

I've heard good things about both, but only delivered at OPR (3 times, gearing for a 4th). My doctor always recommends OPR on the very slim chance the baby needs additional help. I absolutely think mom's comfort is important too, I've just always had really good experiences there. Good luck to you!!

I would go with St. Lukes all the way! It was awesome! The rooms are great (and huge) and the staff is super. The food was pretty good and they give you so much that my husband shared at least breakfast with me every day. I delivered at SMSC with my second and although I had a positive experience, I'd go back to St. Lukes if I could. I haven't heard anything negative about OPR labor and delivery but the rest of the hospital is kinda scary so I wouldn't chance it. Unless you are high risk and think you might need the elevated NICU, I don't think that should weight your decision.

Delivered my first at OPRMC on a Thurs and the nursing care went downhill (steeply!) over the weekend, had a phlebotomist come in at 5:00am(!) to draw my blood (really? I just am getting some decent sleep you *B&#@!). Contrast: Delivered my second on a Friday at St. Lukes South and had fantastic care my whole time there. My Labor and Recovery nurse was a hoot. There was one "nurse of age" that worked overnight and she was the sweetest, most gentle caregiver.

Go to SLS if you can.

Hi B.,
I delivered my first at OPRMC and was scheduled to be induced there again with my second, but they were full, so they sent me to St. Luke's South. Both were wonderful places to have a baby. The one thing I did like better about SLS was that you stay in the same room after you have the baby, and the room is so much bigger!! But that's it! So I guess if you want a "change of scenery," then choose SLS!! Good luck!!

I had the same question a couple years ago. I delivered my daughter at OPRMC and had a great stay. St Luke's South was closer to me but I chose OPRMC because of high level NICU. That has been almost 2 years now and St Luke's may have the Level III NICU now but I am not sure. Congrats and good luck.

I don't know anything about OPR but I delivered both of my boys at Saint Luke's South and LOVED it! I liked how, unless you have to have a C-section, everything happens in the same room so you don't have to move around, and there's plenty of room when family and friends come to visit. I've been to other hospitals where you could barely fit 2 other visitors! The nursing staff was awesome--I teased them that I wanted to take them home with me. The snack room is great too. :) I always told them I couldn't say enough good things about them so I take any chance I get to brag about them! Good luck!

i went to st. lukes south with 2 of my miscarriages and was treated horribly both times. But that was in the ER not in labor and delivery. i did do a tour of labor and delivery and their rooms were nice. I really love overland park regional as a whole though, i dont have any bad experiences there.
