My sister used to have a playdough recipe once upon a time and she cannot seem to find it. Does anyone have a tried and true playdough recipe they could share?

I taught preschool for several years and this is the best play dough recipe I have ever used. Store it in an air tight container when you are done and it will last a while

MICROWAVE PLAYDOUGH

1 c. flour
1 c. water
1/2 c. salt
2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 tbsp. cooking oil
Food coloring

Mix all ingredients. Put in microwave on high for 1 minute. Stir. Cook on high for 30 seconds. Continue until dough pulls away from sides of bowl and it is no longer soupy. Knead until smooth.

My kids are much older now (17, 14, and 10), but when they were young we used to make "kool-aid playdough". They loved making it with me, and it smells wonderful :)

Kool-Aid Playdough
1 1/4 c. flour
1/4 c. salt
1/2 tsp. alum
1 pkg. unsweetened kool-aid

Mix together, then add:
1 c. boiling water
1 1/2 T. vegetable oil

Mix until smooth. Knead in more flour (up to 1/2 c.) until desired consistency.

Have fun!

This is a recipe my mom made for me growing up, and I am 43 yrs. old....it is great. I remember LOVING that it was warm yet when we mixed it up, and LOVING the smell. Very simple.
2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup salt
1 Tbsp. Alum
2 cups boiling water
3 Tbsp. oil
Mix together- seperate into 3 or 4 sections and make different colors with food coloring.
It is really soft, and it lasts quite some time in baggies.
have fun!!!

hi. don't have any tried & true recipes, but have 2 from a hospital cookbook.
1 pkg baking soda
1 c cornstarch
1 1/4 c cold water
cook til mixture looks like wet mashed potatoes. keep in a bowl with a cold wet towel covering clay while working with clay. can be reused, keep in ziploc bag in fridge. when little treasures are left overnight to dry, they will harden and can be painted.
other recipe is for edible playdough. not sure if u want to get something like that started.
good luck & enjoy your kids. they really do grow up fast!

Well it looks like you've already gotten a lot of responses, but here's one more recipe to try! :)

In my early childhood curriculum class we had a day where everyone had to make and bring in play dough. I am happy to say that mine was one of the best! :)

Here it is:
Koolaid play dough

2T Alum
1/2C Salt
2C Water
2 Packets Koolaid (any kind for color and smell)
2T oil
2c sifted flour

Boil salt in water then remove from heat
add Koolaide
add oil
add alum
slowly add flour

I kept it in a gallon sized plastic bag and it lasted for several months.

I tried 1 packet grape koolaide and the color looked blue while it was hot, then the next day had turned to a dull grayish color. Another girl in class had the same recipe and used 2 packets and it looked a bit better, but still not bright. I'm going to try some food color next time to boost the color. :)

Have fun making your Play Dough!!! :)

I remember replying to a post like this awhile back. I searched "my files" and found it for you.

There were quite a few replies on that one. I'm sure you will find a good one to use. I have always liked using home made play-dough vs the store bought stuff.

Good luck in your recipe search... and have fun playing with it :)

There are tons on the internet that is where I have mine from. It's oil flour salt and koolaid for color. I don't remember exactly how much of each. There are also peanut butter ones and other types.
