Need Gift Ideas for 1 Year Old Boy & Girl

My friend's twins turn 1 this month and she is having a huge party! I like to get each one of them a toy in the $40-$50 range. Any suggestions for a one year old Boy and a Girl? I looked at the ToysRus website but since my baby is only a few months old I don't have any experience with any of their toys for older babies and not sure what to get them. So any recommendations you have will be very helpful. Thanks.
