Responding to previous post re: "double dose"- it is considered "piggybacking" Motrin and Tylenol, and it should be Tylenol every 4 hours and Motrin every six, not taken together! Double check with your pedi, but I am pretty sure that is how you do it!
The pain is what is causing him to want to suck, have you tried a paci? Also, I agree with the frozen washcloth, and if he is old enough, maybe a popsicle to help keep the area cold. Once the tooth cuts the gum, he will OK. Hopefully that will be sooner than later! :)

Place a wet washcloth in the freezer , once frozen let him chew..Keep lots of them in there..Find some good squishy teethers some of them can also be frozen.

Go to the drug store and get some Hylands teething tablets.. they are all natural and offer some relief.

you have 2 issues going on - swelling in the gums and the pain that it causes.

My little one won't do chew toys or frozen rags- SO- this is what I learned:

my pediatrician told me to double dose (both meds at the same time) my baby girl with a dose of infant ibuprofen and tylenol before bed (at bed bc the swelling tends to get worse as they sleep for a variety of reasons). It is a life saver.

I am not perfectly rested, but I am more rested than I was. Call your doc and ask for the right doses.

The herbal teething drops are fooey, and my pediatrician said some can even be harmful.

Infant Motrin helped my son during teething. You might have to call your pediatrician to get the correct dose. Hyland's tablets never did much for him and he wouldn't take teething toys or frozen wash cloths. The Motrin gave him (and me) a bit of relief. Hang in there!!!

I second the vote for motrin. I don't usually do a double dose with Tylenol (if you do this, talk to your kiddo's pedi FIRST) because usually the motrin will help. Motrin tends to help control pain and swelling a bit better than Tylenol. If you think the motrin isn't going to kick in fast enough, try getting some orajel swabs and swab that on after giving the Motrin.

Big hugs to you C.. It's so hard when they are teething. My son never like the teething rings but a frozen washcloth worked for him every time. My daughter on the other hand would bite down like a crocodile when teething (making nursing so fun) I would put the baby toohbrush on my finger and rub her gums while she bit me but it helped. Good luck I hope you get some sleep tonight.

We have been told to double dose with our daughter but the dosage they said was tylenol and then 3 hours later motrin. They said to not give both to her at the same time because it is too much meds for her! She is 7 months old and still working on her first tooth. I would talk to your dr, but even an ER dr gave us the same advise. Hugs to you!!

How about trying a cold wet wash cloth or a chew toy?

Check with your pediatrician about how to double dose, but I know that both are givin together for the iniatial does sometimes, it was done for my duahter in the pediatricians office when she was running a very high fever once. Just ask how to do it, that is what they are there for.

Oh my gosh, poor baby. Try popsicles, frozen washclothes, frozen or cold teething pacifiers, orajel. Anything cold should help baby. Hopefully it will be through soon. Make sure you check the dosage if you use baby tylenol or motrin. Call your pediatrician, they may offer some advice too. Make sure you don't use the 'recalled Tylenol' though.

My son is getting his first molar, he is turning 5. I am kind of going through this all over again so he's getting tons of popsicles.

Another idea....check with your doctor to see if its okay! Snow cones or ice chips with juice or syrup on it, or whatever.
