Yeast Infection Not Healing

Has anyone dealt with a yeast infection on a baby boy? My almost 5 month old got one almost 3 weeks ago and it is just not clearing up. We used the prescribed medicine and he would start out looking good in the morning but after his first bowel movement, it would start to redden again. It doesn't seem to bother him at all. But, we took him back to the dr. at 1.5 weeks of using the cream. We also bath him every other night, use a triple cream in between medicine applications (told to do so by the doctor). We use scent free wipes and have even switched to using washclothes to wipe and also dry the area afterward. We're out of ideas. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Also - does it seem weird that the dr. didn't seem too concerned that it wasn't healing after a week and a half? I can't find much useful info on the internet.

So What Happened?

Hi all:
Thank you for all of the great advice and responses. So far, this has worked:
1 hour of diaper free time per day (when I can). We use a no-scent, sensitive wipe on his bottom between cleanings - then use a dry washcloth to really dry him. We then use lotrimin cream on him, letting that soak in a dry before adding some cornstarch in his diaper. So far, so good. I feel like we now own a diaper changing assembly line!

For those who were curious - I am not breastfeeding (very unfortunately...I tried for a long time to get him to latch correctly but he never did - then I pumped my heart out for as long as the milk would flow...had to go back to work). So - now he is on formula (Efamil w/ Iron).

He was also prescribed nystatin for his infection which, I think, just kept making it worse.

Some mentioned food allergies - but he's only had rice cereal and oatmeal. And, the feeding of food never seemed to coincide with the rash. I will get it looked into though - thank you for sharing that thought.

Thank you again! I'll let you know if these methods turn out to be temporary fixes!

I had the same problem with my baby, but she is a girl. However I think that you can do what I did. I was so fedup after about 5 months of going to the doctor and using all kinds of creams and liquids that finally this is what I did. I got those blue cotton liners that they have at the hospital/doctors office,I got a bunch of those and put them in her crip and on top pf me when I would hold her. I took of her pampers almost all day and just let her go bare bottoms so that the air could totally dry out that area. THat's right, no pampers. Every now and then I would put a little ointment on it but not always. The air absolutely dried her bottom out and the rest is history. It was over in 2-3 days! I just wished I had done it sooner...

IF you are using creams that have any kind of oils in them it will only encourage yeast growth.
Besides probitics soak him daily!
I could not use any wipes or clothes with my son it was so bad, and just took him to the sink for a good soaking and he was so much better! Didn't use soap either.
I did use plain yogurt, warmed it up on my fingers then used it like cream!

My son had a similar issue and I did the same things you've done. Though the yeast infection has gone away, he still has a not-so-pretty rash. I've tried changing the brand of pampers. I went from Pampers to Luvs to Huggies. It seems sticking to Huggies brand seems to help a bit.

You probably heard this before, but try letting him air out down there on your down moments so the skin can have a chance to heal.

My son still has some redness every now and then. His pediatrician prescribed Nystatin ointment (which seems to work better than the Nystatin cream). The ointment seals the skin so moisture can't create a bacterial mess down in baby's daipy area.

Hope this helps.

Go to a local health / natural food store (call ahead to make sure they carry this) and get yourself some acidophilous. Acidophilous bifidus (not positive about the second word) is one of the good bacteria you need in your digestive system in order to maintain a healthy digestive tract (and immune system). All the antibiotics we take including those hiding in our dairy and meat) and the high sugar diets we eat are ruining the balance of our digestive tracts. You need to add acidophilous to his diet to restore his balance. It comes in many forms. The best form is a powder (or a capsule which contains the powder) and requires refrigeration. Just mix some of the powder into his food (or even drink) and he should start to normalize.

Also let him have some diaper-free time. As much as you dry an area, you never really get it dry, and when you put that diaper back on you maintain the warm moist environment, where yeast can thrive.

I experienced system wide thrush (yeast) infections when I was pregnant and nursing (and my kids had them too), and despite all the prescriptions I was given, they kept coming back - acidophilous cured it quickly!

I wish you luck with this - let us know how the little guy is doing.

My son got yeast infection at 4 months. It healed fast, since I kept him bare butted as much as possible. Better to select a room with vinyl flooring to do this...LOL

Diapers keep the moisture level high regardless of the sucking abilities they have. Fresh air is the best remedie along with the medication.

My son was diagnosed with a yeast infection as well, but the prescribed cream made no difference. Try Bagger Baby Balm with chamomile. I got mine at my Organic Market. Whole Foods would probably have it as well. Most diaper rash creams contain zinc oxide, which can be a skin irritant, making the rash worse. This really helped. Also try changing your diaper brand. It turns out that even though my son was not allergic to Luvs diapers as a newborn, he developed one as he got older. My pediatrician said that diapers are filled with gel to absorb the urine and that each company does it a little differntly and if the baby's ph balance in their urine is off it can cause irratation that looks like yeast infection. She said it is something that we will battle with until he potty trains. And we do have occasional flair ups. It also helps to cover the applied cream with cornstarch, this also helps absorb the urnine away from your little one.

Try Gentian Violet. You can get it at any pharmacy and you don't need a prescription. You will probably have to ask the pharmacist as they typically keep it behind the counter, but will simply hand it to you. You get a small bottle for a couple of bucks but it is all you should need. It is amazing as we used it for thrush. You can dab it on with a cotton ball (just be sure not to touch the cotton ball back to the bottle after dabbing on his bottom or you infect everything). Let it air dry (it will turn everything purple so don't be alarmed) You should only have to do it once a day (before a long sleep because you can put his diaper on once it is dry) for about 3 or 4 days.

You can find more info about it on teh Internet.

Good luck!

I didn't read what the other moms were saying but I dealt with this about a year on and off plus had thrush on my nipples during that time from breast feeding. Anyway, the yeast is probably in the mouth down through the entire tract so every time he has a bowel movement, the yeast gets on him again and again. So you have to treat through the mouth so clear up the entire insides. Try yogurt. Lots of yogurt. I have heard of people putting the cold yogurt right on the problem area. I don't know if that works but it might. I am not big on medicines but I tried them in this case and they didn't do a very good job. I am sorry that I am not much help. You do need to treat the entire system, though.

Good luck and God bless,

Yes! My youngest gets them frequently. He has chronic ear infections so he's constantly on antibiotics which in turn causes yeast infections. His doctor actually told me to go to walmart and buy lotrimin - it's a foot fungus cream. He said the walmart brand will do. Every time he gets one that's what I use and it's gone within days. Once the infection goes away I use the walmart version of neosporin to to heal his hiney up the rest of the way. Good luck to you!

i'm really surprised to see that only one or two people mentioned food allergies. i would think the reason your son's yeast infection isn't clearing up is because he has yeast in his gut. when there's an imbalance, usually due to antibiotics or food allergies, the yeast takes over and grows and grows. then, every time your son has a bowel movement, the yeast byproducts are excreted and burn his skin again. that's why these types of yeast infections don't heal unless you address the origin of the yeast.

i'm sure you'll find plenty of information online about food allergies - which ones are most common, how to determine which one(s) your son might have, etc. that's the direction i'd go if i were you.

good luck!

I just distracted or sang to them and used the low setting, alternate with cool every 2 or 3 seconds and wave it so it doesn't burn or even get too hot. Then, after it's completely, completely dry, put whatever ointment on. Boudreaux's Butt Paste worked better than anything I've ever tried. Seriously, there's not much in life I can stand by but the blow dry method for rashes......NIRVANA!!

I had that problem with both of my sons. It just wouldn't go away, even following doctors orders. My Mom told me to buy some stuff called Gentian Violet, over the counter at most drugstores, WalMart, ect., ask the pharmacy they will know where it is. It is bright purple and stains the heck outta everything. The best way to use it is once a day applied with a q-tip,paint the whole affected area. Don't use too much or it will dry the skin and make it peel. Use cloth diapers until its healed, don't use plastic covers for them as that holds in the heat, you will need to just double them up. It works better than prescriptions and it only takes a few days to clear it up. Oh and Mom's who breast feed it works great on yeast in the mouth and on your nipples too. But beware the stains never come out of anything and if you use it on your nipples tell your husband he will have to cope with you having bright purple nipples for a few weeks till it fades, lol! God Bless, hope this helps.

With my first we had a dr. tell us to use lotrimin on yeasty diaper rash along with desitin and it has worked each time we have had the problem. We have 6 kids. Another trick for comfort is to put some baking soda in the bath water and the best thing ever for a diaper rash is what we call "free butt time" Take his diaper off for a while it is amazing what that does for any rash.

Years ago, my son had recurring yeast infections-mouth and bottom. I had recurring yeast infections on the breasts. It seems the yeast would come back just as soon as we got rid of it. Acidophilus worked wonders, but then the yeast would recur.

I was working and nursing. I froze milk that I pumped at work, and had about a 2 week supply. I sent frozen milk to the babysitter daily. After a long talk with my LaLeche League leader we came to the startling understanding that my milk had yeast in it, and he was being reinfected with yeast repeatedly. He would be healed, then fed milk with yeast in it and the cycle would start over again. (This makes sense about yeast surviving freezing if you think about frozen pizza crust and frozen breads.)

Hope this helps someone.

Hi E., I give my babies acidophilos powder either in their bottles or baby food. I found Kyodophilus 9 through the Vitamin Shoppe. It's acidophilus powder in a capsule. I open the capsule and give half to my son and the other half to my daughter. Maybe you just need to rebalance the good bacteria in his mouth and digestive tract. Read up on acidophilus powder or liquid, I believe you may even be able to put it directly on the rash or get some domeboro powder at Walgreens and put a wash cloth soaked in it in your childs diaper for twenty minutes a day.

Dear E.,
I'm going to tell you many things that your Dr. will not.
I'm a wholistic practitioner, not a Dr. So, let your gut by your guide.
The prescription meds. actually make the yeast worse.
First, go to the health food store and get a powdered acidophilis. Store it in the fridge and mix it into your child's applesauce, or something like that.
Don't know if you are nursing or using formula; and if you have introduced foods yet.
If no foods, then mix the acidophilis into a little breast milk.
You can take some of the acidophilis and mix it with water and apply it to the affected areas.
Look in your baby's mouth to see if he has patches there as well.
There are other remedies I can send you.
Feel free to email me if you are interested.
Good luck,

Try taking him out of disposable diapers and using cloth when possible. The only diaper my fifth baby will tolerate that isn't cloth is one made by Seventh Generation, and is latex and chlorine free. He also gets a rash like you describe if we use wipes on him, so now we only use wet paper towels or wash cloths. I tried everything before we finally figured out he was allergic to the disposables and wipes--even tried other brands, but they all did it, except Seventh Generation.

Good luck!

Have you tried letting him go diaper-free occasionally?

My son had the same problem as a baby/toddler. We used Lotrisone cream--prescribed by our physician at the first sign of redness. It worked like a charm.

All of my children had very sensitive skin. They were even allergic to certain chemicals in the disposable diapers. I resorted to cloth diapers. . . the cost is similar to disposables, even if you use a service, and that soft cotton seems to help sensitive skin.

If you have recently changed your diaper brand. . . or laundry detergent, this can also be the culprit. When I used disposables for convenience, I found the Luvs brand did not irritate my children as much as some of the others.

Hi E. -

My daughter had a similar problem due to thrush. The doctor prescribed two things: nystatin (orange liquid that they ingest) and Greer's Goo (diaper ointment -- I think this may be a Charlottesville thing because a doc or pharmacist here invented it, but it's got nystatin, hydrocortisone, and zinc oxide in it). My friends suggested the probiotics but I didn't have to do that because it cleared up with the medicine the doctor gave her. But thrush can be very difficult to get rid of because even if your son doesn't show evidence of it in his mouth, it can be all down his esophagus and digestive tract (as I understand it) and then it is excreted with his poop, which makes his bottom have yeast lesions. It takes a while to get rid of it even with the medicine, so an immediate cure may not be possible. Hope this helps. Good luck.

The one suggestion I do have is to buy a box of constarch at the grocery store or supermarket and use that after you have patted him dry and put a lot of ir in his bum and privates. I used that for all my children it keeps them dry and it helps to clear it up.

Try a probiotic, found at your local healthfood store in the refridgerator section. Acidopholius, and bifidus the more parts per million or billion the better. You can give this to him internally, split open the capsules and mix with some water or put a little of the powder in his mouth and have him wash it down with breast milk, formula or water. You can also make a paste by adding some of the powder to a little water and applying directly to the infected area. The amount really doesn't matter, it will help rid the body of the harmful bacteria and put in the good bacteria. After you get this under control you should consider getting a digestive enzyme for him and if nursing for you. Please call if you have any more questions in regards to this ###-###-####. Good Luck

we had the exact same thing happen and finally went to a new doctor (nurse practitioner actually) to get a second opinion and she diagnosed contact dermatitis from his diaper rubbing. We stopped using the cream and let him sleep without a diaper for a couple of nights (just put a few towels under him and removed them as necessary) and it healed up in a matter of days. We went back to the doctor three times (!!!) and he kept saying it was yeast infection but sometimes they take a while to clear up. Of course, we don't see that doctor anymore. He barely even glanced at it when he gave the diagnosis. I get so mad every time I think about how our health care costs keep rising and our doctors keep treating us more and more like cattle in a revolving door. Good luck.

Hey E.,

I am mom to a son who's 7 and daughter who's 2. The big thing with yeast infections is to change his diet so you aren't 'feeding' the yeast. Is he breast fed? Are you giving him any solids? If he's breast fed you may need to cut out certain things from your diet. Has he been on antibiotics recently? If so, you need to get him on some good probiotics to counteract their effects on his system.

A couple of great sources of info are www.askdrsears.com and www.kellymom.com. Good luck to you and way to go in being persistent for your little one!

My daughter's yeast rash did not go away with the presciption medicine.

When I went back for the next Well Baby visit, another pediatrician told me to use Lotrimin AF on the yeast rash and then cover it with normal diaper cream.

Additionally, baby should get some naked time to let the diaper area fully dry. Ideally, the ped said at least 5 minutes with each diapering. That is not possible for me. However, after bathtime, I try to let her run around diaper-less for a while.

The second ped said yeast is very difficult to get rid of because it needs to dry and the diaper area stays warm and moist. He said it could take weeks.

The Lotrimin AF is tons better than the Nystatin was.

Also, we had started using a different brand of diapers. We have now switched back to our former ones on which we never had this problem.
