YAZ Birth Control Pills

I had a baby (my 2nd) about 3 1/2 months ago...on my last OB-GYN visit, the doc gave me the YAZ birth control pill. (I have not been on a b/c pill for several years.) I started a new pack of pills the day I started my period, and I have been bleeding pretty much nonstop for the past 3 1/2 weeks, which is very unusual for me. A normal period for me is 3-4 days of light flow. The instructions for the YAZ pill say that some light bleeding or spotting between periods is normal for the first 1-3 packs, but this is not light or spotty. I cannot see my doctor because I am between healthcare plans right now. Has anyone else had this experience with this pill? (It's the 3 mg/0.02 mg pack of 28 oral tablets) I don't know if it's because my body is still adjusting post-baby, or reacting to the hormones in this pill, or something else? Not only is this frustrating, it's starting to worry me... (PS. I am not breast-feeding baby.)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great replies I received - once I started the second pack of birth control pills, my bleeding regulated and seems to be 'normal' again? But I don't like how the hormones are making me feel in general, so I talked to my husband about the idea of him getting a vasectomy. I don't think insurance covers it since it's an elective surgery, but as soon as we can afford it, I think he will have it done, and I will discontinue taking any b/c pills.

I too went back on birth control this past year after having a miscarriage. and I had the same thing, I was bleeding almost my e tire first pack, after that though I regulated out. I called my doctor and they said it was actually pretty normal. If you can't "see" your doctor I"m sure you could still call and ask for advice though..

After I had my 1st baby 14 months ago I had the same problem. I would spot most of the time and it seemed like I would have a full fledge period twice during my cycle. They had to change my birth control pill at least 4 times. I am now on Balziva (generic for OVCON-35 TABLETS 28'S) and I finally have no bleed through. Most Obs will give you samples (3 months at a time), so even if you don't have insurance they will still give them to you without a visit.

S., I started taking Yaz 6 months ago and I bled more than the usual for the first 3 months. It subsided after that, now I'm back to a 3-4 day period. I started taking it for my hormones ( which were completely out of control after having 3 kids ). Hope that's helpful.-L.

Hi S.! My doc gave me Yaz too, but i stopped taking it b/c the pill makes me crazy. Over the past year I've rec'd at least 2 emails from friends warning others about Yaz. One said a young mom died of a stroke and another was a girl who had a stroke and was partially paralyzed...but then regained movement etc...i don't want to freak you out, but i'd chek into it and possibly another form of contraception. I'll look in my inbox to see if i still have it and send them to you. ps it also gave me hyperpigmentation...melasma..the topic the question above is asking about and it still hasn't gone away...been 5 yrs. best wishes to you, N.

This happened to me too! I got so scared from bleeding for a month that I never went on a pill again. You should try looking at the website for YAZ. I had the same experience, but with the generic form of YAZ. And the website had tons of similar testimonies. I just stopped taking it altogether. It took about 1 and 1/2 weeks for my body to stop bleeding and readjust.

I'm sorry that I dont have any advice with this product, but I just wanted to tell you how sorry I was that you cant seek medical help because of your health plan situation. I live in France where we have health coverage for every single person and its hard for me to understand why this cant happen in the US...the world's leading industrial country. You are worried and you should be able to get the care you need, it must be so frustrating. I really feel for you and suggest that if necessary, try a free clinic as you should not let excessive bleeding go untreated, especially since you just gave birth a couple of months ago. I wish you good luck.

I was on the Seasonale birth control pill (which is the same type of pill) for several weeks & pretty much bled the whole time. I stopped taking it as it wasn't working the way it should. I have heard some negative press about such pills & I don't think they have all the kinks worked out. You could go online for information about it & I would definitely call your doctor. Good luck!

Hi. My OB/GYN wanted me to try YAZ and so I took it for a little over a week. My period stopped then started again. I was so tired and irritable. I ended up just throwing the pills away. I've never had an experience like that with birth control pills before so I'm assuming it was YAZ.

After my 2nd baby I too had a period for a little over 3 weeks. I don't think it's because of the pill. I don't know for sure but I wasn't taking any kind of pill & had a very long & heavy period for the 1st one after the baby. Actually now that I'm thinking of it my 1st few periods were very heavy but then it did calm down.

go to www.johnleemd.com & you will learn all you need to know about taking synthetic birth control pills. I personally would never again put them in my body. They are not good for you.

I started YAZ this month too and I have had some spotting which is totally not normal for me. I am in my 3rd week of it and I was going to give it another couple months to see if it is going to stop. Mine isn't constant bleeding though which is totally common with hormone pills. I would associate your bleeding with the pill for sure. Perhaps you need to try something else. Another good one I liked was Yasmine. Good luck!
