Would You Change Daycare Centers?

My son has been in a daycare for about four months. He loves it and is very happy there. My only problem is with his caretakers. At least twice a month i get a call to pik him up b/c of large bowel movements that they call diarrea.I have explained to them repeatedly that it is not diarrea b/c he has normal weight gain and developmental milestones etc. My son is breastfed and eats a lot of fruits and veggies (he is intolerant of milk and wheat products), thus the large bowel movements. Today was the last straw. I got yet another call asking to pick my son up b/c of what they interpreted as diarrea. I spoke to his caretaker and director and explained yet again that it is a large bowel movement. I also sent him there with some new over the counter cream for his eczema and instructed them to apply it three times a day(my husband drops him off). They said I needed to have a medical release form filled out before they could apply it. I was not told this until I picked him up at 3:15 in the afternoon, meaning that the child did not have the cream applied the entire day!!!!! Is that standard protocol for over the counter items that need to be adiministered to a child? They also called me at work just about two weeks ago saying the baby had a temperature of about 100. When I picked him up and took his temperature at home it was normal. They have lost his belonings or they send the wrong child's bottles or clothing home with my son repeatedly. I am really sick of the repeated false alarms and carelessness and am ready to start my search again for another daycare. I am a first time mom so I really do not know if this is normal or not b/c I am getting annoyed. Any thoughts? thank you in advance. :)

What can I do next?

Hi, M.--

Sounds like you've already taken action, but I just wanted to say that it sounds like we must be using the same daycare! (They need a prescription or doctor's note for EVERYTHING, even just to bring a kid back in situations where most centers just require 24 hours away...!) And yes, I would definitely have started to look for other options. That's what I'm doing now, and you sound as stressed about the same issues as I have been.

I hope things improve now that you're starting somewhere else. Good luck!

I would change centers as soon as you can find another one.

Hi M.,
I did not plan on responding to your request but after I have read the replies that you got so far I decided to write something. If I were you - I would feel even more depressed now.
I would start with saying that however it must be very annoying that they keep calling you, you said your son seems happy there! This would be the most important sign for me that he is being taken good care of!!!!! You didn't write what the director said when you told them these are the normal bowel movements? Have you thought of suggesting that they call your doctor and ask themselves? Btw I have similar experience with my son. His poops are just big and messy. Full stop.
Temperature - keep in mind that he might have had 100 when they took the temperature. He might have been runing or very active or something. Try to look at it that they are trying very hard to protect other children from getting sick and that also means that they will call other children's parents to pick them up to protect your child from getting infected. Try to see it as a good thing!
As for the belongings - you did not write whether they are signed with your sons name? If not - try to write his full name with Sharpie on literaly every item, and pack his things yourself when you pick him up.
Last but not least - perhaps you have tried it - try to befriend his care takers. Be prepared to chat to them for a moment when you pick him up - smile to them, ask how was his day , how was their day, what do they think about his development, do they have any suggestions for you what to work with him on at home, THANK THEM for taking care of your child, tell them how important it is for you and how stressed you are about having to leave him. Get more personal. If they are nice people (and you didn't write anything that would suggest otherwise) it will work!
Again - I understand how annoying it must be, but if your son is happy there - it is worth trying to work on it. In a meanwhile you can search for other day care centers and interview them, just to have a back up. Remember there will be always something that you will not like!
Good luck!!!!!

My husband and I had our last baby and she is 21 months old. My advice to you is to keep your kid out of daycare. My husband is a stay at home dad and I work PT outside of the home. My husband and I have a great home based business where we mentor other moms and dads (who want to keep their kids out of daycare) on how to run a successful, profitable home based business. Our child was born prematurely and we decided we would raise her and not a stranger. No one will care for your baby the way you would. I am not knocking daycare....been there done with my older two kids. I just know that there is a better way to life. There is a way for the "little guy" to get ahead. I noticed in you info about you you state you are a stressed out married working mom. Life should be enjoyable. Not STRESSFUL! We need to enjoy each day and live in peace. I am curious to know what it is that you do? I would love to know how your situation works out. www.livegreeneasy.com

Yes I would change daycares or consider in home care like a nanny. Before I had my daughter I took care of a 6 month old boy for a family and they never had to worry about any of the issues you are having with your daycare. I don't know a lot about the local daycares because I am a new mommy, but you can search for in home care on craigslist. Good luck!!!
