Worrisome Symptoms

Hi Mommies, My 3 y.o. DS started last Monday evening with a fever of 102 that eventually spiked to 104 around midnight and then, even through Advil spiked again to 105. He threw up two times, both at the peak of the fever. He had a very mild, occasional cough just for the evening. The on call nurse told us to take him to the ER.

The ER tested for flu and pneumonia, but both came back negative. They also sent a culture back of which I have heard nothing. The fever reduced Tuesday and was gone on Wednesday completely. No more vomiting during that time.

Friday, he started having a really bad runny nose and yesterday a cough developed. I was worried about whooping cough (because of the pattern of the fever) although the cough has been intermittent and not severe at all. No fever at all today. And the fever for whooping cough is not super high like this in the beginning, I don't think.

Do these symptoms sound familiar to anyone? Anything I need to worry about?

What can I do next?

Just sounds like a typical virus to me. Hope he feels better soon.

The most worrisome symptoms, the fever and the vomiting are no more so I'd wait til Monday, check on those culture results and go from there. I think she'll be fine.

It definitely sounds viral to me. He probably vomited due to the high fever and/or his stomach not tolerating the Advil. Sometimes cold symptoms follow high fevers when it's a virus. Since the fever is gone and the cough isn't that bad, I wouldn't worry. Push extra fluids and rest. He'll be back to himself soon!

This does sound like a normal childhood cold/possibly flu. Fevers are the body's way of "burning out" the organism - so they aren't all bad. 105 is rather high, but the medication should help with that. Viruses last 7-10 days, so it really is just getting through it.

YUCK!! I'm sssssooo sorry that your son is sick!! It sucks when our babies (not matter what the age) get sick!!

For me since he no longer has the fever and vomiting? I would say it was the flu or a virus and has run its course. Call the doctor's office tomorrow and ask about the culture.

The cough could be from post-nasal drip. Does he have allergies? If so, give him some Benedryl to dry him up. Talk to the pharmacist or pediatrician BEFORE you give him Benedryl. From my experience? The cough is from post nasal drip. Make sure he stays hydrated.

Good luck!! I hope he's better soon!!
