Worried..abnormal Pap

Abnormal paps after pregnancy are extremely common, according to my doctor. Paps following the births of both of my children came out abnormal, but then when re-tested six months later, both were normal. Good luck to you - it's probably nothing to worry about.

I had one a few years ago, well actually i guess it was more like several years ago. They did the follow up and found that everything was fine. Try not to stress, it sounds scary, and I think we are programed to always expect the worse, but an abnormal pap is really very normal and often nothing to worry about.

It can be caused by a zillion things. Try not to panic (I know - it's so hard!), and know that it is highly treatable even if it is cancer. It is unlikely that you have gone from normal paps to a late stage cervical cancer in one time period. It could be something simpler too - I used to get abnormal ones all the time until I changed my nutrition and developed healthier cells all over my body - I kid you not. My skin is better, my paps are normal, some mole-like discolorations have gone away, my bone scans are improved, my breast tissue is healthier (no calcifications or cysts), and my organs are functioning so much better that my lab results are like those of someone much younger. I HATED those calls about repeat paps and repeat mammograms, plus various types of breast biopsies. Very anxiety-provoking. Now a thing of the past. I hope yours will be too!

Abnormal paps are actually quite normal my dear. I bet there is no need to worry. I had one come back abnormal when I was only 22. I had a colposcopy/biopsy and it came back negative. There is usually no need to worry. Anything can trigger an abnormal result, a change in your ph balance, how far you are from your period, etc.. I hope this helps! Hmmm when I was pregnant I was told I had an abnormal pap and that after I give birth and for a few months after it then would go back to normal. When I went in for my post-pregnancy check up (I had to reschedule it so it was around 20 weeks later) I was normal. Hope everything is alright!!

I had an abnormal pap when I was 18. They said it was precancerous cells, and I had to come in every 3 months to check them. They ended up going away on their own and I haven't had any issues since. I was pretty freaked out but everything ended up fine. Hopefully it's nothing and you will have worried for nothing. Good Luck to you!

I had a Colposcopy and LEEP right after giving birth to my son, who is not 14 and I also had another child she is 10!! I got my abnormal results at the start of my pregnancy. I had to worry about being healthy for my child. I never had an abnormal pap until this point in time. Stay positive and enjoy your daughter!!

From the date that your doctor scheduled your colpo, I wouldn't be real concerned about it being too serious. Sometimes, reactive cells can look concerning to a pathologist & it ends up being nothing. Good luck & try not to worry.

I had an abnormal pap in the late 90's and also went through a colposcopy and LEEP. Everything turned out just fine and I had two full-term healthy pregnancies in 2004 and 2006.

I have had 2 abnormal pap smears - due to low levels of estrogen. I had to do vaginal estrogen tablet inserts and then the pap smears were normal. So it could be no problem at all. Good luck.

That is a lot of follow up for an abnormal pap. But when I had one they did a follow up pap and it came back normal. Basically if there is anything abnormal, like if you were finishing your period, etc, its abnormal. I think its rare to be cancer. You are justified in being nervous, but at least you are getting a thorough check up and when it comes back ok you can be reassured.

When my daughter was a teen, 15 years ago, she had abnormal paps and after a biopsy was told she had precancerous cells. The first few paps continued to be abnormal but now they're normal.

I've had a few abnormal paps. I think i've had 2 colposcopies as well. In the end they've come back, normal.
I do know that I have HPV however, so I do get checked out fairly often, just in case.

Abnormal could also indicate something with your hormones. You can always have your hormones tested.

I have also had 2 abnormal paps, not in a row. It's pretty common. And honestly, precancerous cells are nothing really to worry about either. They take care of them and your risk level goes back to normal.

Believe me, I get that it's scary, but in all probability it's nothing.

Worried, my ob tells me every time I have a pap test that it has come back with abnormal cells showing and I need to come in and be tested.. this has been going on since I was 20 at least, I am 30 now with a 5 year old and there has never been any thing more than just that abnormal cells, not cancerous or anything to worry about. Of course the first time I heard this I was worried as anyone would be, so I called my sister..I am one of 5 girls and she informed me that all my sister have these "abnormal cells" and so does my mother. So it is not uncommon to have this MANY woman do. Maybe ask the females in your family if they have ever had them..it may be a hereditary thing?

Twice I had abnormal paps and twice I had the procedures and both times all was just normal and fine. Infact the second time, the doctor told me I had pre-cancerous cells (!!)... then they did the procedure and found NOTHING.That was 7 years ago. No problems since then either. I think our cells change as we do... they cannot be the same all the time. The fact that you have just given birth is probably a big factor here. I suggest getting another PAP before you have either procedure.

I KNOW it is very difficult, but TRY not to worry, sweetie. It most likely is fine! I had the same thing done quite a few years ago, and had to have paps every six months for two years, but everything was A-okay. And I did have pre-cancerous cells. Class 3, if I remember correctly. But nothing worse ever happened.

And, if you want to think of the worst case scenario, and it is cancer, then it's been caught very early and the prognosis (sp?) would still be good.

Why is your doc being so cautious. Most women will have an abnormal pap at least once in their lifetime. Most docs do second pap before a biopsy. I had precanerous cells removed in 91 and went on to have two healthy full term babies in 2005 an 2006. But I would ask your doctor why they are doing the biopsy without doing a second pap. If they refuse to answer get another doc. I got the following from livestrong.com...
