Some babies don't crawl. They go straight to walking. My son didn't start walking until he was 13-months old. So I don't think you need to worry yet. But do make sure your son spends plenty of time on his tummy, even if he hates it. Try to make it fun for him. He needs to work those muscles. Make sure you ask your doctor, and they may also give you some physical therapy techniques to help your son along.

Of course kids develop differently, but DO talk to your pediatrician about it! He may have some core strength issues. My son hated to be on his stomach so I never forced tummy time. Come to find out at 3 years old, he has motor skill problems and it is affecting his speech. Who would have guessed that not liking tummy time was a sign of something that would lead to a severe speech delay. If he does have core strength problems he can easily be helped with a physical therapist or an occupational therapist. In AZ we have a program called "early intervention" run by the state. They will come out and do an evaluation and if need be provide therapy at no cost to you. I would bet that OK has a similar program. Your pediatrician should be able to point you in the right direction. It's nothing to worry about, but worth seeing if there's a way you can help him along. Best wishes!

My daughter hated tummy time, too. She didn't crawl until she was 11 months, and walked at 15 months. She is now 22 months, and is caught up on everything where she needs to be. If you're really worried, talk to your son's pediatrician. My daughter had me worried for awhile, but I realized she just does things on her own time. She also didn't roll over until she was 7 months. She's small for her age, but she's doing just fine, as per her pediatrician. I bet your son is just fine, too, and does things on his own time.

My older children were larger babies and they never started crawling until they were around 11 months. I would just check with the pediatrician but I think they told me to start worrying at about 1 year.

my daughter never really crawled until after she walked. I would mention it to the pediatrician at your next check up, but not freak out if he's acting otherwise normal.

My son hated tummy time. I kind of started ignoring the cries a little bit at a time. He is 11mo on the 10th. He just starting crawling about 3 weeks ago. Now, he's pulling up on things. Every baby develops differently. Have you had your 10 mo check up already, speak to your Pediatrician? It will help ease your fears. I wouldn't be worried yet. There are babies that skip crawling altogether. Boys develop slower also from what I have heard.

Good Luck..

My son didn't roll from his back to his front till 12 months. He started scooting at 6 months (on his rear end) and hasn't walked officially and we're approaching 15 months. They all do it at different times. Some kids don't crawl at all. OUr friend's daughter didn't crawl until 12 months. Our son hated tummy time and would scream. They are all different. If you look at milestone charts there is like a 6 month window for all of the activities they are supposed to do. If you are super worried ask your pediatrician, but (just my opinion) I would imagine he's just fine.

Yes, you should be a little bit concerned. Here's the deal... there are reasons why milestones are important. Accomplishing one physical task allows for the others to follow in sequence. Crawling is more than a means for getting around. It builds core strength and bilateral coordination- without these two skills children have a difficult time sitting upright and learning to write. I know this sounds strange, but I am a developmental psychologist and see this fairly often.

I would suggest that you refer your child to you county Early Intervention program and allow a physical therapist to evaluate your child! They will determine the levels of service!

My pediatricians always told me that crawling is not a milestone. Some babies never crawl. My daughter didn't crawl until after she was 9 months old and was walking by 11 months, so she didn't crawl for very long. My son was crawling at 6 months and walking at 9 months, so all kids are different. Just make sure you're giving him tummy time and try to get down on the floor with him to make it fun for him. As long as his muscle tone is good, then I wouldn't worry too much....he'll get the hang of it eventually. If you're really worried about it, then I would mention it to his pediatrician, but mine said crawling wasn't something they had to do.

My daighter is 7 months and isn't crawling yet. I asked the doctor if we should be concerned and he said he wanted to see her crawling by 10 months (like we could physically make her haha)

On the up side he did say that rolling around and scooting does count as crawling as well as army crawls etc. He said if you sit her down and you look at her 3 minutes later and she's in a totally different spot then she is doing okay. The only reason emphasis is placed on crawling is bc it helps to build arm muscles.

So if your child is moving around, scooting, or rolling everywhere I would say you are fine. Now if he just sits there (you didn't elaborate) you may need to ask a professional.
