ETA: My response was not SEVERE. Sometimes the truth hurts. It's the written word and if you don't like what I'm saying? You will read it as rude, harsh or severe...people need to know that working from home is WORKING and not getting paid to take care of your kids.

I told her to cut back. Sell what she doesn't NEED. Don't buy what she doesn't NEED. And stated MY OPINION on the difference between WANT and NEED.

J.,

I'm sorry this may sound rude but this question gets asked so frequently, I swear I should keep a word document that has my canned reply.

You will be WORKING!! NO ONE will pay to you watch or take care of your own kids. You want to work from home? Open a day care.

I work from home. I NEVER walk away from my job as my candidates will call me on the weekend or late at night if they get sick and can't make an interview. I worked HARD to get this privilege.

You NEED extra money? Get a night job to work after your husband gets home - like the grocery store or some other store that is open later. Even as a hostess for a restaurant and work evenings.

But really? You want extra money? Go through your home and start selling what you DO NOT need or want or use anymore - whether it be via a garage sale, ebay or craigslist.

If you are creative and can make things? Then make things and sell them.

Cut back on things you do not NEED - there is a difference between NEED and WANT...need - you MUST have to survive...want - nice to have but you won't die without it.

Stop buying new clothes. Go to consignment shops or Goodwill or even the Salvation Army.

There is a lot you can do to save money in your home!

Good luck!

This question gets asked all the time. In all due respect... NO ONE gets paid to stay home with children unless they are running a day care, have a legit company which enables them to work from home or have earned the privilege from an employer from demonstrating self discipline to be able to work from home.

ALSO, any "job" you get to work from home if you are lucky enough will mean you put your children in day care or work at night when you are able to focus on the JOB.

It takes self discipline and motivation to work from home. Like I said, the people who do work from home earned that spot.

Yes, I work from home. We own our company and we both work from home. It is not easy, it is 24/7. It is very hard yet very rewarding. NO way could I manage my job of bookkeeping (I am CFO/owner) to make sure everything is just right, I also manage all the travel and work with trucking companies for distribution of our products (raw materials which are shipped to manufacturers).

I have to be 100% spot on with my job or I could cost us thousands for a screw up or worse... millions if there were to be a claim due to the wrong formula/product, etc that is sent to a customer. It cannot be done effectively with children running around.

You'll get hit up with the MLM's and if you are into that... great, but you can only have so many parties before you start running people off.

Extra money.. well.. for starters, Wild Woman gave some very good pointers on selling things you no longer need and don't buy things you don't really need.

What is your background? Schools are always looking for qualified academic and music tutors. Babysit for neighbors so they have date night. Are you artsy? Put your crafts for sale on Etsy or EBay.

Be wary of any solicitations and websites and you know the saying..... if it is too good to be true. Don't pay anyone anything in order to work for them.

Good luck to you!

ETA: I didn't take Wild Woman's response as harsh either. It is real life, you learn what you need vs what you want. Delayed gratification.

Two years ago, as a cost saving measure, my employer chose to have many of us work from home, (mandatory telecommuting 3+ days a week). I work full time. As part of the work from home process, I had to sign a contract in which I committed that if there were a child under 11 in the home, another adult would also need to be here to serve as the primary caregiver during working hours.

There are certain work from home sorts of jobs, which you might be able to do nonetheless, including tutoring via skype, serving as a medical transcriptionist, etc. You would probably have to do it when you have childcare in place though, i.e. when hubs is home.

Best,

I am trying to establish a business out of my home (alterations, window treatments, designs, crafts).

It is a FULL time commitment. I worked when kiddos were in school! Now it is summer break, but still am working like a banshee trying to get things 'Up and Running'...

I personally feel you SHOULD take everything that 'wild woman' has to say into consideration.

**and, a thorough PURGE of the home 'stuff' never hurt anyone!!**

Best!

Finding or doing a work from home job, is a job.
It takes tons of research. Like talking to other stay at home Moms and seeing what THEY do, for extra money or as an income.
Sure, one way is to post your question here about it to get ideas.
But, it is hard, to actually find something as far as it being a home job that brings in CONSISTENT money in a predictable consistent manner.

Some ideas:
-sell things on E-bay
-Sell your jewelry
-Babysit in your home. But you need a license unless you do it under the table and get paid cash, and make sure that the people you babysit for do NOT claim you on their taxes as childcare expenses.
-Clean other people's homes
- Dog walk
- House sit
- get a part-time job, that is during the hours that your kids are at school.
- get a part time job at night
- Work at the school that your kids go to. That way you have the same hours as them and the same holidays/vacations and summer breaks. (this is what I do).

Finding and getting a part-time job from home, takes a LOT LOT LOT of work to find.
I know. I have researched this.

Some things some stay at home Moms do that I know:
- they make and sell jewelry on Etsy.
- they work part time at a store
- they do errands for people
- They went to school and got their "massage" license and they do massaging for people.
- They get a job at their kids' school. ie: as a Substitute Teacher, or paraprofessional, etc. BUT this also requires... taking classes and then passing tests and then getting certified.

Anything you look into to doing from home, requires, knowledge in whatever you are interested in, going and taking classes to get certified, getting a business license etc., going and looking at job openings and networking and MUCH more.

You will not find an "instant" work from home job, from us.
All of it takes leg work, researching, and doing the nitty gritty to get whatever job. Just like any other job, outside the home.

And if you are wanting benefits, like insurance, vacation pay, retirement plans etc., then you need to get a job outside the home.

I have looked into some 'work from home' and they all seem to be a scam. Quite often they are a sub-contractor or 1099 position. As a sub-contractor if they don't pay you they only recourse you have is small claims court. Even with a judgement against them you can't force payment.

One position I looked into was selling dog jewelry -- this company expected me to set up at trade shows all over the country. When I inquired about salary and expenses they said no base just commission and the expenses were mine. I passed.
Another company I have seen advertised for a few years is Women's Dream Team. If you go to their website you read glowing testimonials about how happy these women are and how successful they have become. BUT....... they do not list a product.... ummm interesting. So I called the number, the woman's husband answered. I asked about the product..... ummm he wouldn't tell me. What he wanted was my email address so his wife could send me a video all about the company, then if I was interested I could call and they would tell me about the product..... ummmm NO.
What are they soooo cautious or embarrassed about? Is this a phone sex line or prostitution? It could be make-up or sex toys. They wouldn't tell me but I knew it was NOT on the up and up.

My sister and SIL both work from home. My sister sends her kids to a nanny during the day, so she can work. My SIL had a nanny in her home until her kids went to school. I'm not sure there is a full-time job you can do from home while watching small children. What about a part-time job in the evening while hubby watches the kids?

Hi J.. What has been said is so true.

If you can afford the fee for child care then you don't really need to work from home. You have to pay for child care, period. You will never be able to work for anyone else and have any children, dogs, husband, TV, radio, nothing going on.

Work is work.

If you want to make some extra money toss the newspaper. Find some families that need a babysitter occasionally. Sew stuff and sell it online. Paint rooms for people. Wash their cars.

Work is work and if you can't afford to pay full child care fees then you need to consider going out and putting in applications at places like Walmart then work the evening or night shift. BUT AGAIN, your kids will need to go to child care during the day while you sleep.

You have to pay child care so you can work. Or get free or reduced child care by applying for assistance through the state. They often help low income families with the high cost of child care so they can work.

They WILL NOT pay for your kids to be in child care if you are working at home and not employed by a real company with a contract for your services.
