I have been freelance writing for national newspapers for 12 years. I have never made it a full time job because I don't enjoy it that much. However, it has brought in extra money for little things. I have stuck with it because I can do it from home and still be there for the kids.

Not everyone can do it though. You have to have a strong writing background and have the right connections. I just lucky and ran into someone who became my mentor.

If I knew if anything more full time, I would definitely do it. If you are creative, you can make and sell on etsy. Some companies have jobs that can be done from home, but I do not know of them.

The only SAHM job that I had that actually paid the bills was when I was a licensed childcare provider. I didn't want to place my two babies in daycare so I opened one myself out of my home and got licensed by the state....no easy task but it was important to me to do this right. It was the hardest job I ever did but also the most rewarding. I got to be with my babies all the time and also take care of other little ones that needed a great environment and lots of love and attention. I didn't make gobs of money but more than enough to contribute to my family at the time. Most jobs that offer you the chance to stay at home are scams or too good to be true. That's why I made my own way and decided to offer something I had to others.....being a great mom and caring for kids was my specialty so I did what I knew best!

If we knew we'd all be doing it!
If you have a real skill that can be done remotely (like accounting or web design) you could try that. But be prepared to hire a sitter while you work, at least part time, unless your kids are in school all day.
You could do childcare, one or two kids if you don't want to run a full time daycare.
You could also work evenings and/or weekends, when your husband's home to watch the kids.

Not many of my ideas have a steady income. Think of something you really love to do....now find a way to do that. Only thing is you will be putting out money before you bring any in. And you have to know business. My husband for example can make a really awesome cheesecake and has sold some and he also has a mold mitigation business. Both were things he built up on his own. If we were to live on that instead of his every day job we would not be where we are in life.

Lots of folks make and sell beautiful items on etsy.com. Perhaps you could use your crafty talents and try that.

There ARE no GOOD answers for this.

IF you have children in your home you cannot work for someone else. IF you have children and want to work at home then you have to put your kids in childcare during your work hours.

IF there were real jobs where someone would pay US to stay at home with our kids don't you think we'd ALL be working at home? Seriously?

If you want to work from home then you have to figure out what you're good at, what skills you have that you can sell.

IF you sew, make garments for people and sell them through Etsy.com.

If you type 200 wpm and love sitting there doing it advertise a typing service.

If you can write glowing resume's, letter's to businesses, edit books, sit and do data entry for hours and hours, then advertise for a writing service.

If you do super good laundry and iron extremely well then advertise for laundry services. You could charge by the pound but you'd need to undercut the local laundry mats. Don't forget to add in all the stuff that goes with doing a load of laundry though. You have detergent, bleach and bleach alternatives, fabric softener, dryer sheets, electricity, water, gas for the dryer, spray starch, a good iron, etc....

This topic is a touchy on here on mamapedia.

We all pretty much do everything we can for our kids and would love to make some money while we care for our homes and our kids.

BUT it's very unrealistic to think there are jobs out there that a SAHM can walk into and make any money.

If you need an income to help your family financially then you have to get a job. Putting your kids in child is going to happen if you work at a corporation, a neighborhood market or shop, or if you work at home.

NO ONE will pay you to stay at home and have your kids there. If you work for them you work for THEM. You may have to answer phone calls, you may have to deal with their clients, take dictation, receive calls from your employer, etc...if they hear a dog barking, a baby crying, or kids playing quietly they have a right to say you are supposed to be working and not babysitting your kids.

Kids have to go to child care out of the house when a person is working from home. Unless the kids are in school all day and you only work during those hours you will have to face this issue.

Each of us have said the same thing over and over and over to this question almost every day. If you use the search on the top of this page you can see if anyone at all had any ideas that might be useful.

Do you have kids at home? If so, in home child care is a great way to make money and provide playmates for your kids. I have been looking after kids in my home for years. Now that my kids are older and I am working more outside of the home I just do before and after school care, but since I need to be home for my own kids before and after school this is an easy way to make a little extra money.

My friend cleans houses and gets about a hundred dollars a house. She cleans 3 or 4 houses a week. She works about 8 - 10 hr a week. She has family to watch her child while she cleans.

Otherwise, I would say that babysitting for another child is a great way to earn extra income.

This question is asked here regularly if you want to check the archives. I work at home, but it's contract work for a former full time employer. My kids are older, but I still work only when they are in school.

I don't know why you'd want to! :)
At the office you'd get more done.
Either way you have to do daycare.
You cannot work at home with little ones. And stay sane, that is.
Plus they'd have more fun in daycare anyway.

Pretty much all of those "work at home and earn lots of money" things are scams and pyramid schemes.
There are some things that you can do from the home. If you are a crafty type person you can sell the things you made or things like that. You can get a notary license. But none of these are a steady, reliable or substantial income.
Some companies will allow telecommute employees. My husband is one. But, he's been in the industry for a good 15 years now although with a couple different companies. He still has to be willing to travel into the office, sometimes that's just riding up the road a couple hours and sometimes that's flying to the other side of the US. He is not the main care giver of the kids, I am. Even though he's physically in the house, he can't drop everything and help with all the day to days. Sure, he can take a 5 minute break and run the trash outside or quickly change a diaper but it's nothing substantial. He still has to get all of his work done on time and meet his deadlines. He still has to have conference calls. I have to keep the kids away from his office and quiet while he's on those. If the kids are screaming and playing in the background or even if the cats start causing a ruckus in the room he could loose the ability to be a work at home employee or even get fired.
Not knowing what your skills or experience is I can't point you to anything specific.

Go through your closet and consign clothes or see if there is a Buffalo Exchange near you. I, personally, have been to two Buffalo Exchange stores in Phoenix.

Have a yard sale every season.

Make money from the stuff you have.

Then, after you've exhausted that, take the advice given here to babysit. Good luck.

Seriously? When you are working from home - you are WORKING!!! It's not all it's cracked up to be. I should know. I work from home. You NEVER get to "leave the office" or "leave work at the door". With my job? I could work from the beach - wherever I have internet access, my computer and a phone.

What are your skills?
What can you do?
What do you expect to be paid?

I EARNED my way to being able to work from home. I showed that I could produce and get my job done.

if you want to earn money working from home?
Open a day care.
If you were a teacher - tutor children or adults in whatever you did...there a lot of people who would love to learn to read!
If you know a musical instrument? Tutor people

This question gets asked sssoo frequently. It doesn't help when the person asking the question doesn't say what they can do, what skills they have, etc.

Want to declutter your home? Sell on ebay and craigslist.
If you are a great organizer? Advertise your skills and offer to help people organize their homes and take care of their unwanted items - either by donating it for them or selling it on ebay and/or craigslist. This is NOT steady income. But sometimes? You hit the jackpot!

Hope this helps!

Gamma G nailed it. I work at home. It's WORK. My kids go to school or camp while I work. My boss doesn't pay me to watch my kids, he pays me to work. If you want someone to pay you to watch your kids open a daycare.

ETA - Like WW, I earned my work at home job. It's insulting for people to come on here and assume they can just walk into something like we have. No one handed it to us, it took most of us years to get here.

A lot of work at home things you see are scams.

Go back and research this question because it is posted here almost weekly.

Bottom line... do you really think someone is going to pay you to stay home and watch your children? If that were the case NO ONE would be out working in the real world.. They would be home with their children and getting paid...

IF you are fortunate to work at home with a company, it is because you have proven yourself to be a self starter, self motivated and self disciplined person. These people have EARNED their way to work from home.

We do work from home running our company but there is NO WAY I could do it with children around. It is crucial to have my office and be focused or I could cost our company thousands of dollars.

People who work from home and have children have those children in day care or have a nanny. You can't do both.... WORK is WORK.

Figure out what YOU are good at and what YOU like to do and possibly somewhere down the road there is a niche for your idea. Other than that, sell your old things, babysit, tutor if you are qualified to do so.

Good luck

Have you ever considered some type of business like Melaleca? I'm a customer and don't pursue it as a business, just here and there. There are some people who are extremely successful with it and you can set your own schedule.

If you're looking for a full time job from home, those are limited and can be difficult to find legitimately. If you're looking for other things, this site seems to do a good job filtering out the nonsense. I have not investigated every page or offer but I haven't come across anything that screams "avoid" yet.
