Wondering About Getting Period Again

Hey Moms! I have been exclusively breast feeding my 4 1/2 month old daughter...I have not started her on solid foods yet... and my period started yesterday. It is very heavy and I have cramps....just like the good old days. Anyway, I didn't think it was supposed to start so soon. I'm assuming this is normal and that every woman is different, but I was just wondering if this has happend to anyone else, or if I should be alarmed? Thanks!

What can I do next?

IT works for some, it doesn't for others. I have a friend who EBF and got her period at 8 weeks with both babies. You're right, everyone is different.

Ahhhh, yes, the good old days. I started my period arounf 4 months or so after my first was born and I breastfed her exclusively. My doctor told me everyone was different and he knew women who never got a period until baby was weaned, others bleed like a seive the month after baby was born, so don't worry. I was annoyed and dismayed (I rather liked not having one for such a long time!!) but I sailed along. Congrats on your new baby!!

Would of been nice huh...lol, well with my third child that I nursed for 18 months I got mine again too. Probably in the 3rd or 4th month after he was born. He was a rather large child, but we did get a good break from it all. Enjoy your baby.

I have 3 children who I exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months before introducing solids.

I started my period back at 4 months with my 1st, at 2 1/2 months with my 2nd and at 1 1/2 months with my 3rd. I hate it, but I guess i'm one of those women who has them again right away. :) With my last child, my periods were so heavy, I thought there was something seriously wrong.

Don't worry about resuming periods at 4 months. Everyone is different!
Take care,
K.

I nursed my daughter too but my periods didn't start till she was 20mo old. I DID end up getting pregnant and having a MC when she was 18 months before I even had my first period. So to those that aren't wanting to get pregnant and are thinking because they exclusively breast feed you still CAN get pregnant before your period returns.
But yes every woman is different. And every pregnancy/nursing experience also so don't worry. If the cramping is excessive then I would recommend taking a pregnancy test just to be on the safe side if you haven't been using any other type of birth control. God bless,
~~~S.
Hi S.,
It is normal for a woman to get her period back at anytime while breast feeding. With my first it came back at 5 months and with my second I got lucky and it waited until 8 months. Some I know have been really blessed without a period for over a year. So you are normal and I wouldn't worry about anything. Good luck and enjoy being with your little one.
Every woman is different. Some start right away, others don't start until up to a year, or more. It sucks yours returned so soon, so I sympatize with you! But it's totally normal, and it's normal for it to be kinda wonky the first few times, too. And to even been heavier than normal.
I started again with my first kiddo when he was 2 months and about the same with my #2. They just let you know that you may not have your period while you nurse so you don't worry. My older sister didn't have hers at all while she nursed. You are correct in the line of thinking that everyone is different!
Oh, yes. It is normal for some women. Mine returns 3-4 months post-partum while still exclusively breasfeeding. I hoped for a longer stretch, too, but the upside is that women who have this happen seem to be really fertile and really regular. If you want another one, I don't think you'll have much trouble.
I also have a 4 1/2 month old, well actually she'll be 5 months on Sunday. Anyway, I'm also exclusively breastfeeding and I've had my period as well (ironically, started yesterday... but not for the first time). This is my 3rd period. All women are different. Some have their first period after 6 weeks or so (like me!) others are fortunate enough to not have it for several months, even a year. It really just depends. I don't think it is any cause for alarm.
sounds early, but still normal... and the first period or two might be painful and irregular, but your body will regulate over time. it's been a while...my kids are preschoolers now.... but i vaguely remember that i actually had a period about a month after the lochia stopped, so i was all mad that i didn't get a break......... but then i didn't have another period for a long time. so maybe you'll be lucky?
I think you're right...every woman is different in how they "get back to normal" after giving birth. I bled for 3 months after birth...I too was exclusively breast feeding...then it stopped for 5 days and I then I got my first period. So it took me longer with the normal after birth pregnancy bleeding and then I had no "down time" from then until I started my period. When I talked to my OB about this she said woman's bodies recover differently and that I was still in the normal zone. I hope this helps and you can still call your OB this far out from pregnancy to ask any questions.
Don't be alarmed, just figure out what you're doing for birth control!! With my first it came back full fledged around 6 months but I had spotting prior.
