I was dilated to 3 for a month and a half and at 90% effaced for the last 2 weeks. I know you're excited, but I was so mad the dr kept getting my hopes up. Every week she was like "oh, I would have thought you'd have had that baby by now!"
I was dilated at 2, for a month and a half. You want your baby to stay in, until 37 weeks anyway! (I know, it's hard to wait!)
Hi N.
Thats so exciting. I'm no doctor so I am only going on my experience. My son came three weeks early. I was also 2 cm dialated when I went to the hospital but the difference was that my waters broke.
What did the doctor say? He would/should have told you if you were in the early stages of labour.!
Whatever happens best of luck and congratulations.
My advise would be to get as much SLEEP as you can now. Only leave the bed when you have to! Once this baby comes sleep is a distant beautiful memory lol

This is why I don't like it when doctors perform cervical checks in late pregnancy -- it tells you NOTHING, but then makes you wonder. In having read numerous birth stories, as well as having talked to numerous women personally, I cannot tell you how many women dilated early, or dilated a lot, and still went several weeks longer and/or went past their due dates; nor can I tell you how many women were not dilated nor effaced at all, then had their baby that night with labor lasting only a few hours. There have even been women who were 4-5 cm dilated for a few weeks before going into labor. Seriously -- it tells you nothing! :-)
With both my kids I walked around for 3 weeks dialated 1-3 cm. Relax and enjoy your last few weeks of peace and quiet and sleep if your able to! Congratulations!
I was the opposite. I went to the hospital because I was having braxton hicks contractions but I wasn't dialated at all. I went back later and was dialated slightly. I ended up delivering 2 hours later.
I was 1 1/2 cm dialated at 32.5 weeks with my 1st and he was born at 39.5 weeks. You may go a little early but hopefully you will be close to your due date. Hang in there!
I was dilated to 2cm for at least 2 weeks before I delivered...
I was dialated to a 2 for about 5 weeks before my due date... a couple days after I was due, my doc. tried to induce... after 10 hours of picotin (sp?) I was at a 3... so they sent me home... When I went into labor on my own a couple days after THAT my water broke, but I was still only dialated to a 3, so they put me on more pic. (I had preeclamsia, so they wanted to hurry it along...) and that finally got me going. :P
I dilated early with my 2nd child. I was 2 cm at 32 weeks. I had her at 38 weeks. My third child, I had at 37 weeks. First child was at 38 weeks. You will probably be early! Good luck!
From personal experience, and three babies, it's possible to be dilated for a while! With my first baby, I was 2 cm for a couple of weeks, then 4 cm for a couple of weeks. I can remember begging doctors to deliver me. My baby ended up being 10 days late!
Not to discourage you or anything, just know you're not alone. Good luck. May you have a healthy beautiful first baby!
I have 8 kids and doesn't matter how many cm you are.. Yeah your most likely going to end up going within the next two weeks or could be around your due date..
You will most probably go overdue, with your 1st, if you are eating well. Prematurity is often caused by malnutrition.
I would usually dilate 1/4 a cm a week in the last trimester, until I reached about 4 cms, then, my water would break & I'd have a baby a few hours later. I did use the same old herbal remedies the native Americans used
in the last two months - red raspberry, spikenard, squawvine, black & blue cohosh, blue vervain, blessed thistle, etc. Which I think contributed to my fast "easy" labors. The one time I didn't use herbs I was in labor for 20 hrs, which still wasn't that bad, just longer.
Anyway, everyone is different. I have attended women who were dilated up to 6 cms a week, before even starting labor, and those who were thick & closed one day, and had a baby the next. So, the answer to your question is there is no way to tell whether you will go early or late. Try not to get too excited about dilation starting. The baby will come when it's ready, in God's good time. Don't rush it or fear it, just ride the waves! Happy Birthing! If you are being attended by a doctor, please take a doula w you to the hospital!
It's somewhat common for first babies to come up to 2 weeks earlier than the due date.
It is so exciting and you are so ready when that time gets here that's for sure.
congrats, it will happen before you know it! 2cm is pretty normal, you can stay like that for a long time.... so dont start packing just yet :)
Everyone is different. The baby could be born next week, the baby could be born in 4 weeks.... only time will tell.
Congratulations!
Your dilation is not indicative of when labor begins. Some women walk around 4 cm dilated for weeks. Others are closed tight in the morning and have the baby in their arms by dinner. It is not at all predictive.
Even after you're in labor, your dilation shows only far you've come, not how long you've got left. It's a curiosity measurement and nothing else. And there are studies that show an increase in infections with frequent vaginal exams. And infection is one of those things that can send women into labor prematurely or to do a cesarean. So unless your doctor has a GOOD reason, you are within your rights to decline an exam. (Actually you're within your rights even if he thinks he does have a good reason. It's your vagina, not his.)
Baby will come when he's ready. Cherish all these pregnant moments; they don't last long. :)
