Wiping the Booty!

Ok, this is kind of a tmi question but I have to ask. So I have a 4 year old son who I have been trying to have wipe his own booty for awhile now. It isn't that he refuses or anything, its just that he doesn't do a good enough job so I always have to re-wipe him anyway. He will go through 7 kandoo wipes and there will still be some there! In all fairness it usually is a 2 or 3 wipe job, but not 7 or 8! Not to mention all those wipes in the toilet, and regular toilet paper takes him even more. My 3 year old daughter wipes her booty already - I can't believe I am still wiping a 4 1/2 year old's and wonder if I am alone here or what other mamas are doing. Any advice? :)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I know I have only gotten a couple of responses so far but I am glad to see that this is "normal!" I watch that show Supernanny and she acts like it is atrocious that 4 yr olds aren't wiping themselves. Glad to see the "reality" of it :)

Each child is different. In time, he will get better at it.
It's normal and not to worry. It's just their fine motor skills, and granted, it's not easy reaching back there and being all perfect about it.

Maybe, teach him that he can either sit OR stand-up in order to wipe...for some, it's easier doing it while standing.

My girl, when she was 5 years old, still needed help. She just turned 6.. and only now is she doing it herself, and she can do it well now, without skid-marks left.

Don't worry.
All the best,
Susan

I'm thinking it's a boy thing. My son was worse in every form of hygiene than my daughter. It amazed me that he learned to shave before he learned to reliably clean his ears. But that’s another story. It’s probably a matter of his being too finicky about it. Afraid he will actually touch something undesirable. To be fair, his father has never gotten over his fear of poo. When he changed diapers you’d have thought he was handling nuclear waste. Just tell your son it’s a contest to see how few wipes he can use and still get clean. It’s time to suck it up and be tough. With kids, you are always better off if you can keep them laughing any way you can.

Hmm...my daughter is almost 4 and I still do hers. (The only unfortunate side effect of this is that she wants to me to do both, even though she's quite capable of wiping if all she does is pee.) She has the basic motion down just fine, but I'm concerned that she won't do it right and will leave stuff behind. That can get so uncomfortable for them! (I must have some memory of this happening to me or something...LOL). Anyway, I asked my M. and she said she did ours until at least 5 or so (and I remember having to call her in to the bathroom to do it so I was at least that old). I would think it would just be quicker and more sanitary for you to do it until your son shows an interest in doing it himself. You'll go through less waste with the wipes too!

My son is almost 6 and still needs help he can do it himself but always calls me. I make him wipe first and check he usually does fine I think it is a boy thing. I always ask what do you do when you are at school and he says I don't poop at school and he doesn't. I totally think it is a guy thing my husband HATES to poop in a public bathroom its always its time to go home I gotta go. Men!!
