Will My 10 Month Old Remember Me?

I am being hospitalized for major surgery next week for 3-4 days and I'm not sure they will let babies into the ICU and recovery wards...I'm not as worried about the surgery as I am about my daughter. Hopefully she won't be missing me too much as she's really close to her dad, babysitter and grandparents. In fact I wonder will she forget me entirely? I've never been away from her that long.

What can I do next?

She will NOT forget you! She may look at you a little funny, like, "Don't I know you from somewhere?" You'll want to give her a chance to do that if she wants to. But she won't forget you completely. She loves you too much!

Yes she will remember you and most likely, she'll be super clingy once you're out of the hospital because she missed you so much. Focus on yourself so you can heal quickly and be back with your daughter. Hope everything is OK. I'll say a prayer for your speedy recovery!

A ten month old doesn't have the same sense of time that we do. So of course she will remember you. Sleep with a little blanket for the next few nights before you leave and leave it with her when you go. She will smell you on it and find comfort in it.

Good luck on your surgery!

She will not forget you entirely. She won't forget you at all. There will probably be times at the beginning that she really misses you a lot. The nice thing about this age is that they have no concept of time at all, so if you were going to be gone for 3 hours, she might be terribly sad for an hour, then get over it, and be happy when you come back. When you're gone for 3 days she'll probably be terribly sad for an hour, then get over it, and be happy when you're back!

Good luck with the surgery.

Of course she will remember you! I was in the hospital for 3 days when my son was that age, maybe even a little bit younger, and he remembered who I was. He was also very clingy when I got home. He wanted to be with me every minute!! Hope that all goes well with your surgery.

Yes -she will definitely remember you! I left my first son with his grandparents for 4 days when he was 4 months old and he obviously remembered me when I returned. Good luck with your surgery -and don't worry about your baby!

not only will she remember you but by nine mnths children are able to actually miss their parents...though she won't be able to tell day from day, so the seperation will more likely be harder on you

She won't forget you! But, don' t take it to heart (yeah, right) if you get the scared/pouty expression upon returning home and seeing her. My daughter did this as a newborn after a weekend with my MIL, but it was very short lived, and then we picked right back up where we left off! IMO, I wouldn't take any child to a hospital ward where people are sick-hospitals are chock full of MRSA, VRE, C.DIFF, etc. In fact, I'd be glad she wasn't old enough to pester you guys into going!

Yes, I think she will. Does she have a "who loves baby" book? it's a small photo album for kids with chewable pages :) put some pictures in there. also, you could sleep with a blanket, lovey, etc. for a few days so it will smell like you, then she can keep it with her while you are gone.

babies are smart...much more than we give them credit for! she will remember you, but also, as long as she's with people who she know, prob will not be too affected by your absence for a few days!

she will remember you, can she not at least look through the window to say hi mom, ask them before you go into surgery, if they will allow her in for a visit, of course, speaking from experience, seeing you with all the "hook ups" may scare her so i'd be careful about that one

She will remember you? Without a doubt. Don't forget, you and she have been as close as peas-in-a-pod for 19 months. The 9 months she spent listening to your heart beat cannot be erased by 3-4 days.

She will absolutely remember you! When this happened with my sister, my niece would NOT leave my sister's side for MONTHS after my sister got back home. Be prepared to have even less time to yourself than what you do now. Enjoy her, but please remember that you will be needing help during your recovery period. Praying for you :)

Of course! I traveled for a week when my son was 9 months old. Although, I'm not sure if it was me or my boob he missed more! lol! While I'm sure that ICU is a no no, I think that they let them into the recovery area. I took mine at a few weeks old when my mil got out of surgery. It will be harder on you than her. She will be just fine. Good luck and speedy recovery!

I had to leave my daughter at exactly 10 months old to travel out of state to my grandmother's funeral. Until that point we had been joined at the hip 24/7 and I was worried sick about her missing me. I was gone 3 days while she stayed home with her daddy and by the time I got home she couldn't care less if I were there or not. I don't know if she didn't remember me, but it sure felt that way. Either that or she was mad at me for leaving because she wasn't even happy to see me. But it didn't take long and we were back to where we left off. Just be glad (as I was) that she's in such good hands and you don't have to worry about her. Best of luck with your surgery!

There's no doubt in my mind that your daughter will remember you...my son is the same age and I can see the excitement in his eyes when I pick him up from his daycare everyday.
They know who their mom and dad are by now and being away for a short while is not going to change that...Good Luck with your surgery and I hope you recover fast!

She should remember you, but after a few days babies that age "move on" and she will have begun bonding with her caregivers. It's just nature and it's healthy. My sister went through this when we were children and our mother had surgery. She wouldn't even look at our mother when she got home from the hospital. Over time everything went back to normal. Good luck.

No way will she forget you!! Put your concentration in healing yourself. She will be waiting anxiously for you at home, but needs a mom who is healthy and healing. Good luck!

She will NEVER forget you, but she will know something is different and that you are missing. The moment you return, you are mommy all over again. Think about it as having to go on travel or vacation for a week and see her again when you return. She is with family and her dad, so she will be just fine. I pray you have a successful surgery so you will be able to see her when you are out. All the best!

PB&J, I want to assure you that children even this young have wonderful memories. There are a few things you can do for yourself since this is the real problem for all of us mothers. Tape record your voice and get a recording for yourself to listen to and have a small packet of pictures to be looked at.
For the short period of time you are talking means great amounts of time to you but as the mother of 5 I promise you that thier concept of time is totally different. You are going to do just fine and will be grateful that you have such a great support system to help you for peace of mind and comfort.

I had to take my son with me out of state for two weeks when my father was sick. My husband joined us after a week and my son needed a day to get re-acquainted (he was 10 months old as well), but the next day it was like nothing had happened.

Good luck with your surgery; I hope everything goes well!

She will be sooo happy to see you. When my son was 8 months old we went to Hawaii a week ahead of his father. He was just as excited to see him 7 days later as he was after just a few hours. I recently went again (he is now 16 months) for 2 weeks no daddy and the same. She will remember you and want to giv eyou all the love and snuggles. Good luck in your surgery.

She will remember you. But you must find out before the surgery if children are allowed in hospitals at that age. Many places so no children under 14. Just think of all of the germs taht are in the hospital and the immune system of a small child. I am not trying to burst your bubble of seeing her in recovery but it might be best to let her see you when you come home and she can be with you than for her to see you there and can't stay and cause a problem. You will only be away for 4 days and she will be cared for by dad, and grandma and babysitter. Don't do extra worry just relax and get ready for your surgery.

May your stay be short and home a quickly as possible.
Happy hoidays.

My father had a heart attack last weekend. My 14 month old was not allowed in the ICU but when they placed him in the Telepathy unit, she could visit. Your baby can probably come once you are out of the ICU.

Good luck! I hope your surgery goes well.

No, she will not forget you after only a few days. She knows your voice and your smell. Think of it this way, she doesn't forget grandma and she doesn't see her everyday.

Hope all goes well with the surgery!

She'll remember you...3-4 days isn't that long. I was away from my 6 month old for a week and she knew me right away when I returned.
