I have researched this because we are going to start trying for another baby and I don't want to deliver there. I have talked to a lot of friends who delivered there and a few of them had bad experiences (one got her nerve punctured with the epideral needle and couldn't walk for a while and to go through PT...a year later she is walking again and doesn't have the pain anymore. BUT these things can happen anywhere but I feel that your chances are higher here because they are training on you. But that is just my personal opinion), one had a great experience and one had an okay experience but just said these doctors are there to get their training and get out....they aren't in it for the customer service.

Your first appointment will just be an orientation from what I hear (reguardless of weather you already have children). THen you will go back and have an appointment with a doctor. Everytime you go you will see a different doctor...but you can request the same one if there is one you like but when you deliver its whoever is on call. Now, you know towards the end fo your pregnancy you usually go see the doctor every two weeks and then every week....they don't do that. Once a month is all you get. You might get a two weeker at the very very end but I don't think so.

Now, you do have another option. You can switch to tricare standard and go off base (which is what I am doing). Now typically with standard you would pay a $150 deductible (thats just for you...family ded is $300) and then you would pay 20% BUT Pregnancy Care and Delivery is covered 100%. The only thing you pay for is your hospital meals, which should be about $26 for a two day stay or $39 for 3 days.. You also have 60 days to take the baby off base and you won't have to pay a dime. Prime covers the baby wherever you take it for 60 days (check to make sure but it was 60 days) as long as your husband is prime....at least one of you has to be prime for them to cover the baby under prime. After you have the baby if you decide you want to go back on Tricare Prime you can, but you have to wait (I think) a year from when you switched to Standard.

Now, if I were you and this sounds like a good plan, you need to go in the tricare office and ask them yourself so that there is no mistakes in what I have just told you. I am not an expert on tricare or insurance, this is just what I have been told from friends and from them when I asked. There are supplement insurances you can get too if you decide to stay on standard. If you aren't sure, you might want to go to a few of your appointments and see how it is before you decide to switch.

I hope this info helps you out...good luck with whatever route you decide to go. I am sure there are a lot of people out there who have had better experiences there than the people I have talked to.

I had my 20 month old there. We are active duty ARMY! I loved having the baby there. They are so nice. I loved it there. I would choose WHMC any day over BAMC. I didn't like the way i have been treated by BAMC when we weren't A/D.

I had my 14 month old and my 3 month old there, and I thought it was wonderful. Everyone there were super nice and very helpful. My kids were both c-sections that didn't come on their appointed c-section day, but it wasn't a problem for them. The only little gripes I have about it is the parking is awful if you don't have a thrid trimester pass and 9 out of 10 times they will be running late on appointments. Other then that I think you have nothing to worry about. Oh, and if you live over on the northeast side near BAMC it is much easier to take the shuttle there and back. Dr.Wenkus, Dr. Donnelly and Dr.Wiedenfoffer are great to see too. I you have any questions feel free to drop me a line. Good luck!

My oldest was born there.
It was during Desert Storm. Not a good time & not a great experience.
Nothing absolutely HORRIBLE but since then I have had 2 more kids at public hospitals & the experiences were SO much better.
