Which School District Is Better? Lamar or Katy?

We are looking to move to an area with a better school district than where we are currently living.
Our choices have been narrowed down to Lamar and Katy, does anyone have any experience or information on which one is best, and why?
We are concerned about overcrowding, open plan classrooms and whether children are really taught or just driven to pass exams.

Thank you in advance for any information.

I taught in Katy and that is a great district. I taught in the last remaining open space school and the year I left, they put up walls. So, it is no longer an open-space concept district.
Hope this helps.

HI C.,
I don't know about Lamar, but I have worked in the Katy District for 14 yrs. Schools on the south side of I-10 are much nicer than the ones on the north side of I-10. I was a substitute for 2 yrs and saw both sides of the district. I have been a full time employee now for 14 yrs and think Katy district is still a great district. They have an excellent special education program also.
You can go to the schools and get tours, talk to the counselors and Principals....that's a great way to get an idea of what's going on in the district. Good luck! R.

We too attend Cy Fair, and we love our elementary. I've heard good things about our Jr. High, too. Anyway, my neighbor taught in Katy and she has a lot of good things to say about Katy. I know some people who attend Katy and are pleased also.

Hi Chris. I highly recommend the Katy school district. It is excellent! I also loved living in Katy. It is a great area to raise children. Good luck with your decision.

I can only speak for Katy schools ... we LOVE them. I grew up in Katy and now have a sophmore that goes to Katy HS and a kindergartener that goes to Rylander Elem. I think tha school district is on top of the game. My son (kindergarten) has a form of Autism (PDD-NOS, Pervasive Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified) he is what they call "high functioning" and is mainstreamed in a regular class. But the district has been great and provided all different types of therapies and such. My daughter (sophmore) has really done well. She is in AP classes (advanced placement) and plays sports. I don't feel that hey "teach the kids to test" anymore than any other district would. They just prepare them on "how to test" - like get plenty of sleep, eat a good breakfast, if you get stuck on a problem move ahead and come back to it later, etc. The web site for the district is www.katyisd.org You should go check it out. Hope that helps!

C.,
When we moved to Houston/Katy 6½ years ago, we didn't plan on being here until our oldest went to school, so we didn't pay attention too much on school districts. We live south of I-10 and are in the KISD and are we glad we chose to stay here. I am amazed at what my kids (2nd grade and K) are learning.

I've seen another post saying KISD doesn't offer support for special ed, not true. Some schools do, you might want to look at the Katyisd.org web site to see if they have info on which shool does.

My second grader learned this year about the squeletal system, the digestive system, the nervous system and similar thing I learned when I was a sophomore in high school (in Canada quite a few years ago!!!). I am amazed at how much they are learning.

Good luck!

Katy hands down. Lamar was great way back when. We are in Cyfair and my kids do really well. So much better than when we lived on the Northeast side of town. Cyfair, Katy and Klein are all really great but I would choose Cyfair and Katy before all else. We both have such great programs for the students. If you listen to the news you may have heard about all the great over and above programs they have made, by choice and not because they have too. Cyfairs technology program won a National award in automotives by eventing a car that runs on water. There are several graduates that work for Nascar, Ford ect. One of the schools in Katy has a broadcasting program going on where the students air their own news on campus. My kids have such a better attitude about school being in Cyfair than they did where we used to live. My daughter told me that some of the classes she has taken at college was easy because she already covered the subjects in Highschool at Cyfair. She also has told me that she didn't know then but she appreciates that we made the move because her old school before we moved to Cyfair in no way prepared her for college. I have heard great things about Klein as well. I'm excited for my son next year because he's going to start the technology program. In their old school you had to take all the classes separate so you probally wouldn't get to take all of it, but at Cyfair and Klein they have all of it built into one class includes, mechanics, engineering, blueprints, woodshop, architecture, design and computer maintenance in one program. I'm excited for him as he is. I can speak for both districts as I have family and friends in Katy as well that the teachers are very optimistic giving the students a positive attitude. My kids came from right the opposite that my daughter didn't know what to think then she realized the staff really does care about you as an individual. My son I've been told his first two years 3rd and 4th grade that he's the happiest child coming in every morning. I know its because he knows where he came from and appreciates where he is now. Good luck and I think you'd be more happy in Katy than Lamar. Stay away from inner city. The neighborhoods are great in Katy and Cyfair. Both great places to raise kids. Also if you go to the Library you can pull up info on all the districts, well with how computers are now you may not have to go to the libray to get that info anymore. Thats what I did so I chose Cyfair.

I personally feel that katy ISD is better than Lamar Cons. ISD.
Make sure you go Katy ISD south of I - 10.
I have lived both North of I-10 in Katy ISD and now I live in Cinco Ranch(which is south of I -10). It is like a different world of schools even though it is ths same school district.
Demographics have alot to do with it.
Make sure to check out the schools ratings to compare the results of testing.
You will see a big difference in test results.
Good LUck

Katy is better, in my opinion. It is award-winning and it is the best-all around. Most people you ask know how great Katy is. I grew up and went to school in Katy, and when I went to college, I knew so much more than a lot of people b/c of our great school district. Lamar is a great school district, too. Either one would be good, but Katy is better. Hope this helps!!!

I would pick Katy over Lamar.....but I would also take the time to visit the area/school before deciding. CY FAIR and Spring Branch (south of I-10) are also very good. We live in Spring Branch and have liked it a lot.

The choice of school depends on your needs. I don't know anything about Lamar. Katy is pretty good, unless you have a child with ANY sort of issues. (Learning difficulties, behavior problems, special education.) They will not be of any help to you or your child in those situations. My son is in Cy Fair. Yes, it's open concept. Do I like that, no. However, my son has been in their PPCD program for 3 years, and there is no better school district out there, as far as I'm concerned. This will be his last year with PPCD, but he will still be in the special education system to get speech therapy.

Our family started out in H.I.S.D. up until my oldest was in second grade. We moved to be in C.F.I.S.D and have loved it. A lot of our friends children go to Katy and i have seen a lot of similarities in the quality of education. My vote goes to Katy. Good luck!
