My husband has been offered a job in Houston Texas. An offer he cannot refuse. I have no desire to move back to Houston only because our two boys and I are happy here in Cedar Park. We have a great home, school, church community. Granted we do have family back in Houston and that would be the only reason to return to Houston. I am kind of considering the move but not fully till I find the right neighborhood, community, school district and church. I have lived most of my life in Pasadena area, but thats not where I want to raise my kids. Nothing wrong with it but only because its south close to Galveston and Refineries. I don't feel safe after this whole IKE thing. So Sugar Land, Katy, and Cypress-Fair have been the three districts I have heard great things about. Is there anyone that can tell me more about these communities the Pros and Cons of each if possible. We want to make the right decision and I want my kids too be happy where ever we move to. We miss our grandmas and grandpas coming to there sport events.

What can I do next?

I lived in Pecan Grove in Richmond, Tx for 10 years. I loved it and even thought I really like it here and have family all around this area, I still miss it sometimes. Even through Ike, I knew that there would be loss of power, down trees and fences, but I would have felt safe there. We would have attended the Lamar School District, but the other school district was Ft. Bend ISD. My son was not in school yet, so I don't know much about the schools. I had wonderful clients in Sugarland and in Katy and the area was busy, but great. I would not have hesitated to move into either of those two areas. The cost of living was less than it is in the Austin area. Good luck and please feel free to contact me if I can be of further help.

PS: In Pecan Grove, they have the most awesome neighborhood wide Christmas Decorations. They have neighborhood 4th of July fireworks and Easter Egg Hunts. I think that is what I miss the most.

Hi, A.. We lived in Katy for a few years before we moved here to Leander. Now this was before we had kids, but my sister-in-la went to school there and loved it! Her parents were also very happy with it. Twice in the 7 years we've lived here we thought we were going to be transferred back to the Houston area, and have looked at the school districts again. The Sugarland and Katy areas are mostly where we looked, but also in the Woodlands. The thing is that all of these areas have some schools that are ranked really well and some that are not ranked so high. Check out www.schooldigger.com. You can look at different schools and their demograhics, as well as test scores, etc. It even gives information like how many are on free lunch programs and such. It tells you what the student to teacher ratios are like. Now I know that this information doesn't tell you everything about a school, but it does give some good information.

Hi A.,
I taught in Cy-Fair for years and I still have many close friends there - Its a GREAT school district.
Find a school that feeds into Hammilton Middle School and you cannot go wrong. The teachers are awesome, the support is amazing and the community is welcoming.
I grew up in the Pasadena area and I echo your sentiment - o.k. for me... not for my kids.
Have fun in Houston and make sure you visit my favorite resturant Churascos on Westheimer.
Peace,
T.

My two oldest kids went to Cy-Fair schools and we loved the district. My middle child graduated most recently from Cy-Falls in 2007. The only con that I can really think of is the fact that it's big. They pretty much all are in the area though. It's an excellent school district that offers everything that good school districts offer in the way of curriculum, excellent teachers, sports, the arts, etc. Katy and SugarLand are excellent as well. I've got friends who have kids in both schools. I just know first hand of Cy-Fair. If we moved back I would move to the same area.
As far as Ike goes, some of my friends in the Cy-Fair district received more damage than friends in SugarLand. Thankfully the big ones don't happen on a yearly basis.
Good luck to you. Once you get involved in the community I believe that you will enjoy it.

My husband almost took a job in Houston and at the last minute changed his mind, so we just went through this process. We looked at the three areas you are looking at and came to the decision that Sugarland was our favorite. Any one we asked about Houston raved about Sugarland. Sugarland has been around for a while and is pretty established. Lots of ammenities. Check out this master planned community - First Colony. They have over 10 parks and pools that the neighborhoods share. Prices in all ranges. Very family friendly area. Finding a true community was #1 for us. My biggest piece of advice is find a church down there and live close. We really liked the school Fort Bend Baptist - neat school if private is an option for you.
You may know about www.har.com - amazing website for house searching.

Best of luck!!
