my local library doesn't offer ebooks. I don't mind paying a small non-resident fee for a library that does.
ETA: Dallas charges a $250 non-resident fee... Plano library says it doesn't have eBooks yet.
thanks for the information.
It appears that Flower Mound and Frisco will be my first choices. Both are close to me, both offer Overdrive, and both are free.
Thanks!!
E.... apparently in Austin, (but you have to pick it up in person), you can get a free library card.. which gets you access to their e-book library.
Also, Georgetown TX has a card for $25 for the family for non-residents.... we're just north of Austin about 30 minutes. That also gets you access to the e-book consortium...
also... hubby found this goodie...
openlibrary.org
I haven't really looked into it yet....
ETA to add another thing hubby found....
Hubby just found a program called "Calibre" (it's a free program you can download)..... It lets you search "the web" for ebooks in any format and then converts them to the format of your machine. It also has hundreds magazines you can download and send to your reader. I just got the latest issue of "readers digest" for free!
Frisco library offers them and there is no charge for non-residents.
Garland public library (Nicholson Memorial Library) is awesome! They have a great selection of eBooks, Audiobooks and Kindle. I have been downloading for years to my mp3 player. Not as easy with an iPhone, but I don't know if that is a library issue or an iPhone issue. I think that you can get a library card if you live anywhere in the Dallas suburban area, but since I live in Garland, I am not sure. May be worth a drive to Garland to sign up!
Here is what is says on their website: How do I get a Nicholson Memorial Library System card?
A Library card is available to residents of Garland and surrounding communities.
Bring a current official photo ID with your correct address to any Library location.
If you had a card and need to replace it bring your current ID and a $2.00 replacement fee to any Garland Library and get a new card.
People residing outside of Northeast Texas may get a 30-day Visitor card. Visitors cannot check out materials but can use the Internet on PCs at the Library or through our wireless access. Bring your current photo ID to any Garland Library to get a Visitor Card.
I would go to the local library and get the phone books for the metro area and call all of them. I have not heard if most are doing this now. I would not think so. It would be too easy to copy the material to keep. If they can't do it inner-library loan then it may not be something being done yet.
If anyone is doing it I would think the Dallas or Fort Worth ones would but still, I'd call before doing the driving.
McKinney's is really easy to use and I think, if anything, there might be a small fee for non-resident library access.
I just discovered eBookFling.com and will be trying that. Since I haven't actually gotten into it yet, I can't tell you how good it is but I like the idea that I can do it from home :)
Plano offers non resident cards for $50
Garland used to issue non-resident cards for free but that was a while ago but it is worth a shot.
I know Seattle Washington has ebooks in the library.
