Which Doctor Do I Call for This?

I'm almost 5 weeks pregnant, and my back is so severely hurting that I cannot stand upright. It's the right side of my lower back. It feels to be a nerve, because no amount of massaging appears to make the pain stop, but the muscles are obviously also tense, because my back is now twisted so that I am bent over to the right when I do walk. Anyway, being pregnant I can only take tylenol, which doesn't do much for the pain. Which doctor do I call to get some relief? The OB? The regular physician? Or a chiropractor? (I don't see regularly see a chiropractor but not sure if they might help)

Thanks! And so far, evading morning sickness but the hormones for sure kicked in this past weekend, because I had a cry-fest when my dog cuddled with his spongebob toy and just looked so cute...

What can I do next?

I'd start with the OB. Sounds muscular and the OB will know more about what medications you can take while pregnant.

Chiropractor! I had this kind of pain you are describing, same place and same side! Nothing made the pain stop except lying on my side often helped relieve it some and getting adjustments from a chiropractor did wonders. My pain was pretty much throughout the entire pregnancy, getting worse as I got bigger.

I wouldn't have made it as far as I did in my high risk, twins pregnancy without my chiropractor. He is awesome! Of course, so was my high risk ob group, but they okayed the chiro, whole heartedly!

I would call a chiro. If you don't have one you regularly go to when you call you need to make sure they can treat you being pregnant. Not all will. I had to go when I was carrying both my boys. That was the only way I got relief. The Dr or OB will not give you anything strong enough to deal with that kind of pain.

Good luck and God Bless!

When pregnant, I always call the OB first (with one exception; I twisted my knee badly during on of my pregnancies and just went to my regular doctor). In my experience, the regular doctor is usually oblivious to even common pregnancy complaints, let alone recognizing something that might be worthy of concern. They also tend to be more careless with the prescriptions they write, even if you tell them a million times that you're expecting. It's just not on their normal radar. The OB, on the other hand, will probably have a good idea of what you're dealing with and how to safely address it. Hope it gets better soon!

When I was pregnant, my regular doc wanted me to see my OB first for anything, since they are the experts in what is and is not allowed while you are pregnant.

I always called my OB first when I was pregnant. Is the pain constant, or does it come and go? I'm not a doctor, but I ask because that sounds like my pain when I get kidney stones. Of course, it could be any number of things, so I really think your best bet is to call your OB. He/she will ask all the right questions to help you narrow it down and really figure out what you need to do.

Go to your OB first and they will refer you to a specialist if needed. Your back pain is pregnancy related (sounds like back spasms to me). Start there.

Best of luck!

that sounds like your sciatic nerve!!

Chiropractors are great for this type of thing - even when your pregnant!!

Ice packs help as well.

I'd make sure there isn't something going on with your pregnancy first. Go get the OB to check you out. You can have something wrong in one place, causing "sympathetic pain" elsewhere, like your back. If it is your back, the OB can give you a name for someone he or she likes to help with your problem, and medication that is safe this early in your pregnancy. The other people you see may not be able to give you medicine.

So sorry you are hurting.

When I was pregnant I would have been bed-ridden without my chiropractor. The weight of the baby and fluids etc. puts quite a strain on the back. I would look in your area for one that works with women and infants.

Not everyone has good results right away and please check reviews or find one through a referral. It would be a better choice than taking medication.

Definitely mention it to your OB.
Many chiropractors treat pregnant women. Do you have a good O.?

What type of massage have you tried? A professional? Because that would be a lot different than having someone "rub your back" right?
Good luck!

Your ob should be able to give you some excersizes to try for the nerve pain. I had it REALLY bad when I was pregnant with Aubrey.

Ooh, pregnancy induced sciatic nerve pain. It's only going to get worse. Call your OB, but the only pain relief medication will be Tylenol used as directed. That's it. You can try a chiropractor but I didn't get ANY relief when it came to sciatica pain from a chiro. Even before pregnancy. Of course, I have fibromyalgia.

Your best bet is resting it and finding positions that don't aggravate it. Don't over-reach. If you work out of the home, then get your boss to find you an ergonomically correct chair or pillow for your chair. They have to accommodate you. You don't even have to tell them that you're pregnant yet.
