Which Cloth Diaper?

I am on a quest to start using cloth diapers. My daughter is 17 mos. and seems to have developed an allergy to disposable diapers. I've tried using 2 different brands of hypoallergenic diapers, but it only helped a little.
So my mind is made up! We are switching to cloth! But which ones?
So far my plan is to get pocket diapers and a few AIOs for when I work and my hubby is in charge of diaper duty. I know I dont want flushables.
What brands have you tried and liked?
Anybody used the sprayers you attach to toilet? If so how did you like?
I would also be willing to try "mommy made" diapers, anyone try any of those? You know not the popular brands.
So far I'm leaning towards Fuzzy Bunz, and/or Happy Heinys.

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone who responded! I do like both the Fuzzy Bunz and Happy Heinys, I'm in the process of trying out some WAHM cloth diapers....it's good to support mommies!
Her rash is slowly going away, but I think her bum definitely prefers the softness of Cloth diapers!

Hi A.,

I am not using cloth but friends who are like: fuzzi buns, bumgenius, little beetle, & firefly.

I am having good success with this disposable diaper (the only one on the market that doesn't use gel): www.tushies.com

And I use this product in tandem to eliminate rashing: http://www.motherlove.com/product_diaper_rash_relief.php

Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Hi A.,
I cannot remember the name of the online company, but we used organic cotton diapers, they were incredibly soft, very absorbant, they are are very light beige in color. Also, you can order diaper liners, very thin paper-like sheets to catch the poop to easily put it in the toilet, really reduces the mess. Also, since your daughter is sensitive, remember to use white vinegar in the rinse cycle (can put in the "softner" area of the washing machine), it removes the remaining traces of detergents, odors and makes them soft again. Cloth also helps her "feel wet", so potty training goes a little easiser. Good luck to you!

I use Fuzzy Bunz and love them! My husband likes them too because it is very quick to get to change them. They are very easy to use and clean. I bought mine from www.nurturedfamily.com -they give you a free insert with each Fuzzy Bunz diaper and have a great hanging diaper pail that is made from the same material as the Fuzzy Bunz diapers.
Best of luck to you!

I use the bum genius and love them. the only problem i have had with them is their laundry tabs which you attach the velcro to have worn off, but I found a way around that and just attach to the part you normally would when you have the diaper on. There 3.0 model is much better because it comes with an extra insert layer for extra absorption like for use at night.

I used and loved Fuzzi Bunz with both of my kids. I purchased Happy Heiny's but didn't like the fit at all. (works for other's, just didn't work for us). As for a sprayer, I didn't use for my first but could have w/my second). Seems at this age, my first had the kind of poops that would just flick off so the poops were easy! With my second who is 3 now, his poops were and still are very soft. He is pottied trained so it isn't an issue now but I actually had him out of cloth earlier than I wanted because of his poops.

If you don't get enough responses and still need help, email me directly and I can send you some links to some mommy made diapers from Mom's in my playgroup.

I have been using Fuzzy Bunz for over a year now and I love them. I do not like the velcro pocket diapers. I love Fuzzy Bunz because of the adjustable snaps I've never had to buy a new size (I bought mediums and petites and extra inserts for nighttime). Best of luck with your cloth diapers whichever you choose! :)

I have a friend who uses BumGenius and LOVES them! I have one fuzzibunz that would leak when my son peed even a little bit, but I guess this was an exception to the norm - I've only heard good reviews of them otherwise. I have Bumkins AIOs and love them... my only gripe is that you have to change them at least every hour and half for a toddler, more like every hour really because they don't hold a whole lot... or maybe my son was just a heavy wetter! So when you go out, be sure to keep a bunch in the diaper bag. Good luck and welcome to cloth diapering!!

Good morning
Why dont you just buy the cute little ruffle panites for her .and she can start to potty train? When my daughter was 17 mos old, I made the mistake and used the pull ups and disposal diapers for my daughter for too long and she was so hard to potty train, it took up to she was almost 2 1/2 yrs,,,,,,,,,maybe start early, instead of buying cloth ones, she wont be in them to long and the real little girl panties will last way longer !!
Good luck

I use and LOVE Bum Genius. They adjust for size up to a toddler size, so you don't have to replace them when baby grows. I do a quick rinse in the sink and wash hot then double rinse cold.
TIP: sometimes there can be an odor of urine in freshly washed diapers. This is detergent residue. Do an extra rinse cycle.
TIP: don't use vinegar. The mild acid can wreck your elastic and weaken the waterproofing layer.

GOOD LUCK!

I SERIOUSLY recommend BumGenius one-size diapers. They have a fabulous fit, are very "user friendly", and grow with your child. They've been great for us and it's nice because you don't have to keep ordering more when your baby grows out of one size. They are also pretty trim so you don't have to buy bigger sizes of clothes for your baby just to fit over the diaper.

I also have a diaper sprayer and LOVE LOVE LOVE it.

Good luck!

Hi A.! I am very happy to share that Dri-Dee Diapers in Pasadena, CA. was a WONDERFUL diaper service. They only charged $54.08 per month and they bring you a whole week's worth of ultra soft cloth diapers and a diaper bag to put them in. You are not required to wash them or rinse them at all (unless the diaper has a lot of poop, then they just ask you to rinse it out in the toilet bowl and put in the diaper bag they supply). They also have these wonderful diaper covers that are waterproof on the outside, but cloth inside.

The cloth diapers are already pre-folded so you just have to put them into the diaper cover. So simple!!! My husband, who is ALL thumbs, could do it easily. Our daughter NEVER developed diaper rash, not even in the summer months! In the event that your baby should somehow develop diaper rash, you call the service and they will bring out specially treated cloth diapers that will make the rash disappear. The customer service was great, you really help our environment by not adding to the yucky tons of diapers in garbage dumps and there is no stinky diaper odor in your home (your diaper bag comes with a free odor disk!). You are REALLY making a wise and healthy choice for your child. I hope this helps you. Martha Gartsman

We have fuzzi bunz. I happy Happy Heinys too but i don't like them as much. We just dump the poop in the toilet, it is mainly solid and goes down no problem. My husband got the hang of pockets. My cousin had AIO but they take a while to dry.
It is funny you mention the reaction of your daughter. We were in disposables for 2 weeks right after my second was born and my daughter got a rash all around her thighs where the elastic is the second week and it lasted for two weeks. Man we were happy when we started back on cloth again.

I use a combo of Fuzzi Bunz and Happy Heinys during the day and the Bum Genius one size at night. (With the nighttime insert) I love the Fuzzi Bunz the best because they dry really quickly and have an adjustable fit. Plus my little man has figured out how to undo the velcro at this point! We have the sprayer, but never ended up attaching it. Now that he's eating food, the poop just sort of peels right off, then I give them a quick rinse in the sink so they don't stain. I have discovered and LOVE the Wintree detergent from Costco. I use only ONE tablespoon in the whole load and no longer have odor in the liners. Good luck!

dear A..
In these economy minded hard times why spend money if you can make the best product for your child?
In all my knowledge and opinion the diapers should be of natural fiber, and cotton is the best choice. One more thing is very important and that is to have your baby drink water as sugessted by the book.( doctor spock or others) and this will help to have your babys body working better especially in the internal organs area. no need to worry about throwing the diaper since it is totally recyclable. yours, an old mother.

I would highly recommend going with gDiapers.

I don't like and use the flushable inserts either and use organic cotton trifolds instead. I have been using this system for a year now with my daughter and love it.

The nice thing is that you can reuse parts of the diaper if it did not get wet. in contrast to the pocket ones where you need to change the whole thing. gDiapers have a snap in liner, it is easy to unsnap and reuse the colored outside again. The other is that they are all cotton - all but the part that holds the trifold. So there is no polyester on babys skin.

The right number for me is 12-15 gDiapers and 25 cotton inserts.

I knew it needed to be a simple system to keep going and for me it has been.
either way, good luck! :)

Congratulations on your choice, not only will your baby feel better you are also doing a favor to the environment!
sincerely,
C.

love love love fuzzi bunz. but it's all about the fit with your baby. you can buy the cloth diapers used on ebay and then sell them when you are done. i also got a sprayer and have been quite thankful for it. I think cloth diapering is the greatest thing now that there are these wonderful products that you can stuff (like fuzzi bunz). i tried happy heiney, bum genious and several others and just like the ease and fit of fuzzi bunz best. I'll be selling my smalls soon, they are at a friend's house, she is done with them, and my daughter is still in her mediums.

Hello A., I bought a pack of different sized unbleached prefolds along with a variety pack of covers. They all worked fine and I never really had a preference of one over the other. As for the sprayer, they are sometimes tricky to install and may require getting a converter fitting (some toilet's valves are 3/4" and some sprayers are 1/2".) We still use ours now and although your daughter is older and I'm sure you've healed, it was really a godsend postpartum to have the sprayer (and not just for diapers!) If you google 'muslim shower' or 'hand held bidet' you should find a number of different sprayers and maybe some even less expensive than those sold on diaper specific websites. Look for one with a good solid hose especially if your water pressure is higher than normal. Hope this helps! Cheers, M.

Fuzzy Buns are great, with Hemparoo stuffers, which keeps the diaper very absorbent and not so bulky. I used them with both of my children who are now ages 5 and almost 3. Both were out of them by 26months. BTW, they are very daddy friendly, my husband thought they were extremely easy to use. I did a dry pail method with flushable liners in the diaper for messy diapers, so I cannot comment on the sprayers. But I think you will find that cleaning and maintaining the diapers is not bad at all.

Good luck with switch.

I use Fuzzi Bunz and I have been very happy with them. I have seen the sprayer attachment for the toilet but haven't really had a need for it. The "waste" usually comes right off the diaper without any trouble (I keep the empty cardboard toilet paper rolls and use those to scrape off the stubborn ones that don't want to come off - sorry if that's gross, but it's economical and it works!) I decided to get Fuzzi Bunz after $60 a month on disposable diapers for two boys was hurting the budget, and I have found them almost as easy to use as disposables. It just involves any extra load of laundry every few days. I keep the dirty diapers in a diaper genie with a standard kitchen trash bag - that helps to keep the smell at bay until it's washing day. I was never able to use the Fuzzi Bunz overnight with my boys. No matter how many inserts I put in there and how thick it was, they always leaked. I think I have "super soakers" - I don't think everyone has that trouble.

I have a friend who has used cloth diapers for years and she does not like the Fuzzi Bunz. I believe the kind she prefers are called "Motherease" (?).

If you decide you want to go for the Fuzzi Bunz and are interested in used ones, I am preparing to sell some of my supply since my oldest was potty trained and I don't need so many (I have about 10 to spare). They are larges, I believe they are supposed to fit 25-40 lbs, but I used them on my baby since he was only about 16 lbs, I just overlapped the top snaps and they worked fine. He has the chunky legs so I think that is the only consideration. If your little one has the lovely slim legs, they might not work for her. If you're interested I can give you more details.

Hope you find success on your quest!
