I made a last minute decision that I want to make Bretzeln tomorrow (German Soft Pretzles). I know I can uses a baking soda wash as a substitute, but I'd really like to try the recipes that use a lye wash. I know I can buy it online, but there is no time for that. Any idea where I can get lye? It's not exactly a common ingredient.
Lye is often used in baking. You wash doughs in a bath with a small amount of lye. The chemical reaction in the oven makes it ok to consume. It's also found in Chinese noodles. You can also find lye in toothpaste. Sodium Hydroxide is another name for lye. Which is probably why medical help is recommended if someone consumes too much toothpaste.

My first thought was... why does she need to hide a body? Apparently I'm watching too many old episodes of Bones!
German specialty market would carry it. At least, that's where my MIL gets hers.
Most grocery stores carry a small quantity of it.
if you have a German Deli near you - or even a German Grocery Store - they will have it as well.
I strongly recommend you call first.
Hmmmm.
Not sure I'd want to try any of your pretzels, but you might be able to find someone who carries it. Try a local bakery and see where they get it, if they do. You might find one willing to sell you a small quantity.
My mother used to use lye in her pretzels -- they were awesome (Pennsylvania Dutch). The baking soda wash makes it taste like Auntie Anne's pretzels, and while that's okay, it's not the same. Follow up if you find it and let us know where.
Lowe's carries a brand of drain cleaner that is 100% lye. This the brand:
Roebic Laboratories, Inc. 2 Lb. Heavy Duty Crystal Drain Opener
I use to use lye to make handcrafted soap (back when I had time for hobbies, prekids, LOL).
There is a German Deli and grocery in Colleyville on 121, it used to be in Southlake, you might try them. They have a website for the grocery but I'm not sure if it's all encompassing.
