I'm 38 weeks, this is my first pregnancy and I'm so anxious. Is there anyway to know when labor will start? Seems like they have tricks for everything, do you know how to get a better idea of when the wee one will arrive?

What can I do next?

Really, there is no way to tell, especially since it is the first. Some women start dilating/effacing a week or more before, others only a day before labor. Some women have their baby at 38 weeks, others at 41. (Mine were late, early, and on the due date, so that even varies by baby).

I know it's hard, but try to relax and enjoy the last few days to weeks of not having to carry a whole bunch of stuff with you every time you walk out the door or being woken ever hour by a hungry baby. Don't get me wrong, it's wonderful when you can finally hold your baby in your arms, but life changes forever. Just try to get extra rest now (haha, I know) and be patient.

Your baby could come today or in 3 weeks... theres no way of actually knowing for sure unless you are induced. Don't dwell to much on it, take this time to rest and reflect on your pregnancy. Take walks with your hubby or friends.

When the baby has dropped, you are effacing, and dilating... You may be a week or so away.

Good luck, and congrats!!!

I don't think there is anyway of knowing, especially with your first. I swore I'd be late (because I was late so I figured it was payback :) and both of my kids came at 36 weeks....surprise! Good luck! (I know it's easier said than done but enjoy these last few days/weeks of quiet and time with just your husband!)

If you just wait for the baby to come when he/she is ready then you will have no idea whatsoever. If you are induced or have a scheduled c-section then you can plan the day. I had all 4 of mine set up for induction and with 2 of them I went into labor on my own on the day of induction so we never had to induce. I just asked my doc if we could do it this way. I have had people ask why I would do that and I had two reasons. First, I always had horrible back pain with my pregnancies and by the end it would be quite unbearable, Also, once I had more than one I needed to make arrangements for the others to have care while my husband and I were in the hospital. The care was my mother and she travels with her job so I had to be sure we did it when she was in town.

Good luck with #1 and just be patient, it is wonderful but super hard at the same time so taking a little down time now is a good idea.
