When in the Potty Training Process Did You Start Using Training Pants?

Hi, I have 22-month old b/g twins and I have started potty training them over a month ago. I know they are young and there is no pressure, but my son started telling me before he went poopoo so I decided I would get potties for them. We read stories, talk about the potty, flush, and my son will go peepee (poopoo only once) in his potty several times a day (if I remind him). Although my daughter has only gone peepee a couple of times in her potty, she likes to flush and they are both resisting diapers. I am not in a blinding rush to potty train them, but since my son is showing signs, I think it makes sense to seize the day! Anyway, the nurse at the doctor's office said he is ready for training pants and that he should wear them all the time, except for a pull-up at nap and bedtime. I am wondering when other mothers started using training pants, if ever?

What can I do next?

My kid is now 4 in the potty training i only pull up at night and if you think he is ready and showing signs try with the big boy underwear during the day when you are in your home and pull ups when you go out at nap time and night
i use just sometimes during the nap.

Hi D.,

Anytime I used the training pants on my 2 yr old, she just thought she had a diaper on and peed in them.
If I put her in her undies, she knew it felt different and used her potty every time. However, I did have to use overnight diapers for her until she was 4 since she couldn't last all night w/out an accident.
She's 6 now and my son just turned 2. I've started potty training him as well w/out the training pants but he's proving to be a little slower than his sister was.
IMO, the training pants just feel like diapers to kids so they use them as diapers. I would just try underwear on them and see how they do.

Good luck to you!

hello, I tryed not to with both my boys, now 6 and 3. If I put them in pull ups, they would go pee in it. Now, if I leave the house, I did put one on. It was easier for me than changing several pair of clothes. When I was home, they wore underwear and I took them to the potty several times a day, wether or not they needed to or not. Now, the 6 year old never had to wear a pull up at night. My 3yr old has to wear one. He pees every night! Well, I dont know if that helps or not, good luck!!

I assume you're talking about those thick padded fabric pants instead of pull ups? I never used those. I started with pull ups with my oldest son when he was close to 2. I tried underpants several times, but he just kept wetting them, and when you're cleaning up your 5th accident of the day, it's very hard to not get mad or frustrated with your kid. :) After a few attempts at that, I had to "bribe" him to go potty and keep his underpants dry. I wrapped up a boy and made an excel spread sheet and every time he went potty and kept his pants dry, we put a sticker on it. Once he filled in all the spaces, he got to open the presnet. We started with 5 stickers, and then 10 . . . He was a nightmare to potty train. He was 3 1/2, almost 4 before he was completely potty trained, and well past his 4th birthday before he was dry at night. So, basically with him, I went from diapers to pull ups to underwear when he was ready. The pull ups were easier than diapers in encouraging the potty so I didn't have to get anew one if it was still dry.

Because of the endless headaches, I never really brought it up with my second child. I guess I was in denial. He'd go when I'd take the oldest or before baths, but I never pushed it or anything. I was going to work on it this summer. Well, right after his 3rd birthday, he just decided to go to the bathroom. And he did and has had no accident whatsoever. He just went from soaking his pants all day to absolutely nothing, even at night. So he went from diapers straight to underpants.

I think with my first, I was feeling pressure with other people telling me to get him potty trained that it became me wanting him to do it rather than him wanting it, so it was a power struggle. I think that's why it wasn't really successful and took so long. With the second, I never pressured or anything, and he honestly did it completely on his own. Since your son is showing interest, I'd go ahead and try underwear, and if it's not successful, just put it up and try it again in a few weeks. I wouldn't pressure your daugther. Just make such a big deal when her brother goes, maybe she'll want to do it too.

I think it was Dr. Sear's site that I read to wait until he/she is keeping the diaper dry for two weeks and then go to underwear....seriously---it seems like they will never make it, but before you know it, they do and it goes smoothly. Dr. Sears' site has great advice that helped me a lot.
