When Did Your Period Return If Exclusively Breastfeeding?

My daughter is 5 months old and exclusively breastfeed. I woke up this morning and was bleeding - I assume this is the beginning of my period again. Is it normal for this to happen so quickly? I thought the doctor told me I would not get it for longer, say 9 months. When did most of you get it again?

What can I do next?

Hi! I got mine about 9 months post-partum, but i wouldn't worry, every woman is different, and I haven't heard anything negative about this, I would think you are okay.

I breastfed, and I got my first period around 9 months. My sister in law breastfeeds too, and she got hers at 5 months (of course she was mad). Everyone is different though.

I got my period 6 weeks after my delivery too and I've had my period like clockwork same time, day, etc. since then. My daughter is now almost 18 months old and we're still not trying so I know I'm not pg either. I breastfeed around the clock still and cosleep. Always have. Its totally normal and you are sooo fine. Take it easy and enjoy your little bundle. Some of us are earlier and some of us later.

It was nine month for me, but that was when my son slept through the night, so I didn't feed him for more than six hours one time and my period came back. I think it's more to do with the amount of hours between feeding, not so much to do with months old.

My son was around 10 months old, but I think it just depends on the person and maybe how often you're nursing. I went down to about 4 feedings a day and believe that's how my period came then. I wouldn't worry as long as you think you have enough milk supply and are eating healthy. I hope this helps :)

When I started cereal/solids at 6 months. However, I have only had 2. Also be aware that the first postpartum period is SUPER heavy, at least for me. I called the doctor because I was so worried. But they said as long as you don't fill a pad or tampon in an hour and half your okay.

At 6 months, when my daughter started eating solids (cereal and veggies/fruits) once a day. I know others where it's come back after 4-5 months and while their children hadn't started solids yet... it depends on the person.

My son is 6 months and I haven't had a period yet. Since we're currently "winging it" with the birth control (but trying to avoid for another 6+ months or so) I looked up some stats a while ago.

I read an academic journal study on this and the average time was 9 or so months, but for 80% of the women the average was more like 10 or 11 months. So basically, there were a few outliers who got theirs early, but most didn't until later. For most people exclusively breastfeeding, fertility will return more quickly if there are *sudden* changes in nursing habits. Ie if your baby suddenly starts sleeping through the night, or suddenly decides to eat a lot of solids and cut down on nursing. Either way, the more gradual the change, and the more often the nursing (even if he's eating less total) the less likely it is to spur the return of your fertility.

With my first son I got my period when he was around 14 months old. With my second (now almost 17 months) I still have not gotten it. I believe this is variable, though, and it depends how often you breastfeed/pump and whether your baby is feeding at night. My younger son nurses at night because we cosleep but I had my first son in a crib at night. Have you done a pregnancy test to make sure you are not pg?

I was exclusively breastfeeding and I got my period exactly six WEEKS after my delivery date. My OB couldn't believe it. And I nursed for the full year. And I have a friend who hasn't gotten hers after 13 months. It depends on your age, fertility, and body type.

I got mine right away! Be careful if you don't want to have another child right now. :)
