When Did Your Kid Start Telling You They Have to Pee?

Or just go to the bathroom on their own. My son will be three in august and we started potty training (for the second time) two weeks ago. He still has some accidents, but usually only one every 4-5days ( normally because he doesn't want to stop playing to use the potty) and we are still working on pooping in the potty. The only thing he doesn not tell us when he has to go. He will just hold it intill we tell his its potty time. We have told him that he can use the potty anytime he needs to but her still waits intill we put him on before he goes, and if we go anywhere he will hold it (sometimes for 5 hrs!) instead of going in on a big potty or even going on his potty that we take with us if we are going to a relatives house. When did you kids tell you they have to go after they started potty training?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Right now we just have him wearing cotton shorts around the house because they are easier for him to pull down.

When you are training them you don't ask them if they need to go, or count on them to tell you, you just take them.
I started my son at 22 months. Took him every half an hour or so for the first day or two, then every hour for a few days, then gradually spread it out to every two hours or so. Did the same thing with my girls, around the same age.
You just say, it's time to go potty now! If he goes, great, if not, no big deal. Just keep coming back.
They call it training for a reason, it's up to you to train him, it's not much different than training a puppy: consistency and lots of praise :)

My youngest trained at 27 months, but he doesn't care to share his private business, never did, so just goes on his own. He turned 3 in April and the only time he says anything is when we are out and he needs help to get up on the toilet, no stool there like at home.

I would just keep telling your son "It's time to go potty!' when you think he should, pretty soon he should start telling you when he doesn't need to, and will hopefully become more vocal about letting you know when he needs to go or start going on his own.

Mine didn't actually tell me or do it on his own until around 3.5.

He was potty trained and wore underwear, but I brought him on a schedule so he wouldn't have an accident. Then one day I heard tee tee hitting the potty and a flush and it was him, lol. He started on his own and has done so since.

I started hard core with the schedule at 3. And we didn't use pull ups, it's the same as a diaper. Wearing the underwear he could feel and see that he was wet and had to change. It worked for me but all kids are different.

My daughter never did, once she got the hang of me taking her she just started going on her own, shes 4 now and has been potty trained since 3 even through the night. she was fairly easy, now im working on my boy who will also be 3 in august and having a really hard time, hes just not interested and always seems to be a step ahead of me and pee right before i get him to the potty.. i guess boys are different.

Mine never told me they had to pee, and I thank them for that. When they were potty trained they just did it all on their own. About the only thing they asked was where is the bathroom if they didn't know the location. :)

She started telling us pretty quicly, but she got a reward for going on her own rather than being prompted to go... At that age she too was more interested in playing than going potty, so we needed to make potty the more interesting choice.

Good luck!
