Friends discussing boys pranks and such behaviour recently, wondering when such behaviour started, as common in the 70's/80's does anyone remember? Don't remember it so well myself....

What can I do next?

I think there should be more discussion of why things done by boys are called "pranks" when they are cruel and involve another person's private parts. Is that what you are trying to say? I also think that parents have almost zero idea of what their kids are involved in, and if they are, they dismiss them as "harmless pranks" and say things like "boys will be boys."

Interesting first question...

By the way we Americans don't put extra vowels in our words like behavior.

Um, some little kids think it is great fun and mutually consent to giving each other wedgies. They think it's silly. And yeah, I'm pretty sure cave men were probably pulling up each others loincloths or whatever to get a rise out of them. I've seen it in Captain Underpants (The Wrath of the Wicket Wedgie Woman). My son occasionally has asked his father and I to give him a wedgie, 'just for fun'.

Like anything else in the world, it can be fun when there's consent and not fun when it's against your will.

ETA: I guess you changed your post?? People are talking about wedgies...

welcome to mamapedia!!

what kind of pranks are we talking about?
Pranks have been around for hundreds of years....it's nothing new.

You're stating you never heard a kid getting a swirly in high school?

You've never seen or heard of someone slapping a sign on someone's back?

You've never done a "prank call"??? Never heard of one!!

I know it was around in the 80's and 90's. It's generally associated with bullying but I think it's gained some ground in the last 10 - 15 years.

All around unpleasant either way.

That was a common prank when I was in school 70/80's, but I am sure it was common before then as well.

I notice that the types of pranks pulled now can be very hurtful, at least the ones I have seen on YouTube or M TV.

Odd first question.
Wedgies were common in the 70s. Maybe before that.

Could it be that you don't remember it so well, yourself, because it never happened to you? I suggest asking your brothers, spouse, male friends or colleagues about it. I find males to be the best resource for questions about males.

Well, my grandparents told stories of pranks they played, so it's been around much longer than the 70s. And it's also not exclusive to boys.

This isn't really a question, right? You are just wondering what people are going to say?
