Wait for the invitation, which will state the level of formality (black tie, black tie optional, etc.) then google for dress length, color, tux, suit, guidelines.
The wedding is in January. I don't know if it will be "black tie" or not but it is sure to be big and expensive based on the family friend who is getting married.
1. what would be the most appropriate thing for me to wear? I am 38, 5 foot 1, 112 pounds. In good shape but I've had two kids so there is some belly pooching. I generally go for classic versus ultra trendy styles, but not aggresively retro/vintage.
2. What about my husband? What do guys where to a wedding in such a semi-tropical location? Do they do "Aloha wear" on the East Coast?
I am so fashion backward but would like to look good at this affair.
Thanks for your help!

South Florida is so weird, and difficult, fashion wise. You really do see it all.
I recently went to a wedding in the evening, in July, and saw everything from church clothes to formal wear. I wore a summer suit, pink, that was lighter weight but still quite formal, and felt a bit out of place fashion-wise. There were darker colors, which is unusual down here (home of Lilly Pulitzer style).
As OneAndDone said, wait for the invite. If it's night time it's hard to go wrong with an LBD (little black dress) with HIGH heels (women love heels down here).
If it is a black tie wedding the invitation will say it. If not I would go with a suit for your husband and a nice dress for you. I assume that it will be indoors so the AC will be on and you will not be melting.
It depends on who is getting married. If they are hispanic then dress very elegant. I know because I am hispanic. That usually means a long gown, or a very elegant knee length gown. Nice high heels, the works. Your husband should wear a dark suit. The semi tropical location doesn't change the fact that he should wear a dark suit and tie. It may mean that you can wear colors that are more vibrant. good luck! and have fun
Appropriate would be for your breast not to hang out with a skirt 2 sizes too small. But I assume that won't be you.
You will look best in what you feel best in. I go to about three weddings a year (some years more) since I have a very large extended family. I've seen very formal to sun dresses. If you are looking to impress, just go one step above a sun dress. I think formal is too uptight even for a "fancy" wedding. All our weddings are fancy, Catholic and traditional but how guest dress is not as important so long as it's not stripper-ish. Earlier I read a post where someone posted a site called Rent the Runway:

You don't need to order there but it will give you a good idea of wedding attire since there is a category for it. You can search Weddings and then what type of wedding (black tie, cocktail, daytime, beach...). I go vintage too. I'm in shape but the belly pooch is kept in line with body forming underwear of some sort, usually underwear (yeah it looks grandma-like but no one is going to see it!)
Your husband should also be comfortable. Even at a formal wedding he can get away with a suit or blazer with either a button down shirt, nice clean t shirt or polo. Wait, that t-shirt look only works if he's in shape. Otherwise, a suit will make any man look good. The East coast preppy look is great but only go tux if it's black tie. Honestly, I don't know anyone who does that kind of wedding anymore.
I can't stress enough for you to be comfortable. Yes you may run into some snobs but they want nothing less of a LV suit and dress on you. Trust me, the couple is too busy worrying about the day and everyone's eyes are on them. You'll only attract attention if you are 1. miserable 2. scantily dressed 3. dressed like you are ready to fix your car.
I agree with OneandDone--the invitation should tell you what you need to know.
I think that it depends a lot on your personality, too, what you'll feel comfortable in. I usually opt for a classic and simple (and figure-flattering)style dress or suit with a remarkable pair of shoes.
For you, something like this

For Hubby,
Slacks and a blazer that compliments your outfit. Doesn't have to be matchy matchy, just compliments.
I would suggest a light fabric sun dress, strappy and breezy, knee length or just below, sandles of course. For your husband, light colors and light fabric, a white button up shirt with light khaki pants.
Enjoy, Miami is HOT. Plan accordingly.
