Hi mamas. I have not been to a wedding in ages, so I am wondering what my hubby and I should wear. We are invited to a wedding that is going to be in August at 5pm in a gazebo outdoors with a reception at a nice but not fancy restaurant. Just how dressy or not dressy should we be considering the time and location? Thanks for your help!
Thank you all for the great advice! I can shop with confidence now. I am very glad to hear about nylons being out because I absolutely hate wearing them and haven't worn them myself in years. I feel bad for the bride whose guests came in jeans - I would be upset too and wouldn't even think of wearing them to something like a wedding! ask the bride. my wedding reception was outside and small (at my parents house, they have a big house and yard) and most of my relatives wore jeans and shorts. It was really upsetting because this was my wedding not a BBQ (I had my wedding at city hall with a few witnesses so the reception was really important) so I think you should ask the bride or MOTB
When in doubt the little black cocktail dress (just above the knee if you feel comfortable) with colorful jewelry (or pearls) and shoes to match. I suggest sleveless since its summer and hot in IL.

Don't wear white/off white. That color should be reserved for the bride only. I would think a nice pants suit or a skirt/blouse or sun dress for you...for your hubby, dress pants, shirt and tie. Have fun!
I'd say a nice summer dress or sundress would be fine, and pants and a cool cotton button down shirt would be fine for hubby. Sounds like a slightly informal wedding, so I wouldn't go nuts trying to overdo it with the likelihood of high temperatures.
beautiful august evening, wear a summer dress, dressy sandals. keep it short(er) and simple. colors can be anything but i would stay away from browns, blacks, white. and off white.

For you, I would recommend a sun dress...any color but solid black or solid white. For your husband, I would have him wear dress pants, a "silky" short sleeve t-shirt and a jacket that he can remove if he gets too hot.
We just went to a summer wedding that was outdoors and that's what my husband wore...he couldn't bear to wear a shirt & tie in 98 degrees!

Casually dressy: pretty sundress and sandals (don't forget a wrap for your arms at night) and hubby should wear slacks w/ a button up shirt but no tie. Have fun! I miss going to weddings; everyone is married off in our circles.
No white, no lace, and I think it used to be no black - but that is actually changing a bit. It is a wedding - so I would dress up a bit. Something sleeveless or sundress style - but with a wrap in case you are cold at the restaurant later, and linen or really nice khakis and a button down shirt for your husband are probably great.
It will be hot! I would wear a nice summer dress and possibly bring a little jacket or wrap for later in the evening if it cools down.
I just went to a wedding last Saturday and there were all sorts of outfits. Short, longer, elegant, I noticed a lot of sandals. I actually wore black and a lot of people did, too, however you could wear any pretty dress, it seems to be totally acceptable. My husband wore shirt, tie, suit jacket, matching pants, and I noticed most men just wear the same things almost all the time to weddings. Men's fashions don't change a lot. You just don't want to look to cheap or overly flashy so you don't upstage the bride. If you plan to dance oh boy my feet still hurt-wear shorter shoes. (ouch again, heels were too tall). Or bring a change of shoe -perfectly acceptable. All in all HAVE FUN. Smile and laugh.That looks great on everyone.
We are going to something similar. I got a summery dress that has a pattern to it. I got it at JCPennys. My boyfriend found some nice linen pants with a short sleeved button down shirt.
Because the wedding is in August and outdoors, the hosts will expect people to be slightly more casual. I recommend talking to anyone else who is going to the wedding to find out what they are planning on wearing... even ask the hosts, does your husband need to wear a tie? I always say to heir on the side of dressier than casual, but it helps when you just ask.
I would wear a dress that you would wear to a cocktail party (not a floor length gown)... possibly a sundress that is on the dressier side. I would have your husband wear a shirt and tie with no jacket. Not that you were thinking this, but I've seen people show up in jeans and I'm just throwing it out there.. DON'T DO IT! Have fun!
You've got some good advice here. Just thought I'd throw out there that nylons are definitely out, if you were thinking of wearing them. I've been to 2 weddings this summer, so far, and not a nylon in sight! Have fun!
Nice summery dress, bare legs, dressy shoes. Him, dark pants, oxford type shirt with tie and a loafer type shoe that looks nice but not too casual. I don't think his wearing a suit would be required unless everyone is very well fixed financially.
I agree with a nice sundress for you and slacks and shirt for your husband. Sounds like he can skip the suit for this one.
I would say nice sun dress for you and you can't go wrong with khakis and a nice shirt for your hubby.
