What Type of Breakfast Cereal?

What typoe of cereal do you give your toddler in the mornings? She doesn't like toast, eggs, or the usual stuff toddlers eat for breakfast. She loves fresh fruits. I saw someone had a toddler cereal but I can't find it at Jewel or wal-mart. The baby cereals are too bland for her.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I didn't realize that you can just feed them adult cereals. I give her raisin bran mixed with Honey Bunches of Oats (raisins removed) in milk. She only eats 3-5 spoons of it, but it's better than nothing. She then will eat some fresh grapes, plum, and other fruits. Thanks for all your responses!

Hi N.D.,

My name is Jean and I am a mom to very beautiful and energetic 2 yr old twin girls. You can try cheerios or kix. If plain cheerios are too bland you can try honey nut cheerios. My girls love them, although one of my girls will not eat cereal with milk in it. The types of cereals my girls like are honey nut cheerios, kix, apple jacks, froot loops, cinnamon toast crunch. Hope one of these works.

I used to by the Gerber Graduates Toddler cereal but I have not been able to find it at the grocery stores here anymore. I did find it at Big Lots in Ohio and bought a couple of boxes. One thing that I used to do was either make the infant cereal and mix in Applesauce, or just buy the regular Oatmeal (not the instant stuff) Make it with Milk and mix in some applesauce. My daughter loved it, but she eats pretty much anything. If you know of a Big Lots you might want to try there for hte toddler cereal. My nanny recommended frozen french toast from Trader Joes because they have a whole grain french toast, but you could also try the regular grocery store for some Eggo or Aunt Jemima or something. I hope I was somewhat helpful.

My daughter and the little boy that I babysit love Life Cereal. Also, I saw a nutritionist on the Today Show that said that cereal for children should not have more than 6g of sugar per serving to help curb childhood obesity.

ND,

At 18 months, we (and daycare) gave Jacob unsweetened cereal. Cheerio's, Rice Krispies, Wheat Chex..whatever. He liked them all. He LOVES NutriGrain bars and 100% whole wheat toast with Apple Butter or jelly on it. NutriGrain also makes whole wheat waffles and there is some whole wheat panacake mix - can't think of the brand name. Add some cinnamon and the pancakes are great - even my hubby will eat them with pleasure.

In time, she will eat more and more - as long as it's offered to her a few times.

Good luck.

I do a lot of pancakes (my girls don't like cereal much so I only serve it occasionally)and you can put berries in them! I also do oatmeal plain and add a little brown sugar the packets are too full of sugar. Good Luck and have fun!

I give my 11 month old either warm baby oatmel with a little cinnamon sprinkled into it and fresh banana chunks in it, and he LOVES this, or sometimes if he's coveting my husband's cold cereal we will make him his own cold cereal with cheerios in formula instead of milk (b/c he's not old enough to have milk yet). He likes both.

My daughter also loves fresh fruit so we give her Cheerios, Rice Chex or Special K with strawberries or bananas sliced in. She also loves the Special K Red Berries which has freeze dried strawberries. All are healthy with low sugar. Another though is granola - my daughter ate the kind with raisins or blueberries in it once in a while last summer, which was when she was 18-21 mos.

Some great suggestions there! Does she like yogurt? It is so good sweetened or with fruit and you can freeze it in the summer months. I also do a lot of oatmeal, and millet is good if you make it up ahead of time with a little cinnamon or coriander and microwave or simmer it just before serving. Not a likely choice for picky eaters, so we also do a lot of pancakes and waffles. (Mixing healthy ingredients in the batter is my secret weapon.)You can buy frozen biscuits/croissants, bagels, and put cream cheese with fruit on them. That sounds so good! I'm a breakfast person. My biochemist/nutritionist said it doesn't have to be breakfast food as long as it's balanced and healthy. We do Chicken Stirfry sometimes. Rice is so versatile. For quick things, those lowfat, lowsugar cereals like Chex and Cheerios are best for that age.

Cheerios, Special k, Chex & my kids favorite Honey Bunches of Oats. Cereal is full of vitamins and fiber. A low sugar cereal is an excellent choice for a balanced meal paired with fruit or yogurt.

I've never looked for a toddler cereal.

I've been lucky in that my daughter (two weeks to 2 yrs old)loves oatmeal, raisin bran, frosted mini wheats and granola by Kashi. She loves feeding herself!

Good luck.

The cereal is in the baby section with the other baby foods. If she wants fruit that is not a bad thing. There are so many things that she can have and try a variety of things.

Have you tried bagels? My 14-month-old likes whole wheat bagels lightly toasted (or warmed). Also he sometimes likes (homemade) French Toast with just a sprinkling of powdered sugar on it.

I like to mix cereals sometimes. Kix with cheerios, fruity cheerios, etc. My daughter is 21 months and also likes the golden graham type cereal... different shapes. However, I like the shredded wheat, and I think the kids like it more than me. When I give it to my daughter I make sure it's bite size and has absorbed some milk, but she is a very good chewer and wasn't a gagger/choker.
Maybe you could also try hot cereal, or give her granola or wheat germ on her fruit, fruit w/yogurt, fruit cheerios and milk, flat bread or get out your rolling pin and flatten some of your own bread, spread pb & j and roll it up. You might try trader joe's for a healthy kid cereal.
If she is willing to eat things without much hesitation, maybe try giving her some new variety. My son stayed on babyish food until he was between 12 and 15 months. My daughter started wanting and eating our food around 7-8 months. She's petite, and doesn't eat a lot, but she likes fruit and vegetables and will choose them over junk. My son is the opposite.
She may even just be having a food jag and be liking a certain thing for a while. I swear my son will eat chicken nuggets forever....
Sorry for the long novel...
Good luck.

I just tried making a mock oatmeal. It turned out pretty good.

2 apples pealed/chopped
1 banana
1-2 T ground flaxseed
water

Mix in a food processer and enjoy. Today I put in strawberries instead of a banana, yum! (If you give her strawberries yet, it is a high allergen food.)

My daughter LOVES Quaker Oats' Maple and Brown Sugar Oatmeal. It's good for her and she gobbles it up. They have a lot of other flavors like apple and cinnamon, banana nut bread, nothing bland about it - and best of all all you have to do is add water and nuke it it for 30 seconds! Waffles with syrup are another favorite of hers. Both are fast and easy in the morning.
