Pretty sad that I dont know what to get my own kid for his bday! I dont want to disappoint him with clothes, but the kids got a lot of toys! Mainly, cars, trucks, he has a powerwheels jeep, books, building blocks. Our friend is going to get him a super soaker gun. Im not ready for little pieces like legos because hes a little diaster with his stuff! Ugh, I dont know! Hes pretty interested in my daughters DS, but we dont allow him to play with it. I know leapster has something similar for the little guys. Do your kids have a little leapster handheld game, or better suggestions?

What can I do next?

My 3.5 yr old LOVES his puppy tent. He plays in it all the time and my 14 mo old will crawl in there with him and they will giggle for 15-20 minutes.

Here's something kind of like it:

Oh, and the tent folds up really fast, making clean up a breeze.

I got my kids the leapster when they were little - it was hardly used. For wahtever reason they didn't like it unless I was doing it with them and we all both preferred me reading to them than the voice on the machine...! So it ended up not being a great gift.

Kids like things like giant boxes they can cut windows in and forts out in the back yard. My kids loved playing in the plastic playhouse in the back yard (they have "log" style ones that are gender neutral. They also loved the springy fort tent kind of things that set up in minutes. Many a winter or rainy days was spent in that thing!

I asked the Leapster question a couple of days ago and everyone said they loved them for 3 year olds.

My son just turned 3 and the presents he likes the best are a fireman floor puzzle, Scribble and Write by Leapfrog and Play Doh.

I think if you look at all the leapsters you can probably find one that is geared for a young child like yours.
Is there anything else he would like instead of or in addition to Leapster?
-Battery run quad for kids of age 3
-Portable DVD player (you can take on trips in the car) w/a new kids movie like "Cars".
-puzzle (for his age group). just one though.
-big kick ball to play kick w/you in the backyard
-his own child size lawn chair (just make sure he can't get hurt on it)
-kid's size mitt and soft baseball (mine started out w/a soft pliable mitt w/velcro on mitt and ball to catch with then graduted to small baseball glove and soft baseball)
-sandbox w/sand toys (tip: place in the shade) :)
-mini golf set for kids (plastic one to start out with)
-child's plastic baseball bat w/stand for the plastic ball he can hit it off of
-kid's gardening tools to help you garden
-thing to attach to hose so he can run through the sprinkler (they have cute ones in the stores)
-kids wheelbarrow to help you in the backyard
-Razor scooter w/helmet and elbow pads
-bicycle w/training weels
-Lil Tykes basket ball hoop (comes w/the ball)
Hope that helps and happy b-day to you lil guy!!! :)

Get him a Leapster!!! Absolutely an amazing toy for his age...he will learn so much by playing it. And he will have so much fun he won't realize that he is learning.

My son just turned 4 this summer and loves his Leapster, definitely a good buy. He also loves board games, one of my favorite is Toy Story Yahtzee. (I'm sure they make it in other characters) He also loves his hot wheels tracks, and does a pretty good job putting them together by himself.

My son and daughter both have lapsers and love them. They got them when they were three. He is now 7 and still plays with it, although ready and begging for the DS. Just an FYI, I bought most of our leapster games from craigs list for $5 each.

We took ours to his first movie in the Theater (Cars 2).
He has every toy under the sun, and just got more from the family.

So I wanted to do something with just us and him *(he has a baby sister too, who gets a lot of attention right now).

We got my 3 yr old the Vtech V.Reader almost a year ago and she absolutely loves. There are many educational games that go with that teach her how many different things. Check it out, there are games from 3yrs old to 7-8 yr olds as well. So this could be a great investment for later gift ideas as well.

Heres the link for the V.Reader.

Train table, water table for outside, board games. We have not gotten our 3-year old a leapster but are thinking about it for Christmas when he's a little older. Currently he LOVES the game Candy Land. Put that with Chutes & Ladders, and Hi-ho Cherry-O and you've got a nice gift. I understand it being hard. Our son gets so much, we always contemplate what to get him- he's 3, does he really need anymore?

Every year when my kids birthdays are near, I take them to the store and have them pick things out. I tell them in advance I am not buying anything on this trip, I just want to see what they like and want. As they pick things out, I take pictures of it with my phone. Then later I can come back to the store and buy something that they chose. We have always done it this way and they love the process. My kids will often choose things off the store shelf and ask me to take a picture of it, even when their birthday is not close. They have learned that having pictures on moms phone of what they want definitely works to their advantage.
