Whatever you get, make sure it is fine with the parents or not the same thing they may be getting him.

Each boy will vary, in what they like.
My son when that age, liked:
Dinosaurs
Cars
balls
Legos (but some kids at that age are not careful with small pieces. Hence, it may be a choking hazard).
Building blocks
Gardening stuff
Outdoor stuff: 3-wheel scooters, bike with training wheels (but you need to get a bike that is appropriate for his height etc.).
Superhero figures
Maybe an outdoor wading pool just to play in on hot days. Not it being about "swimming."

My son is about to be 4, and he LOVES trains. He also loves his scooter. His scooter has three wheels, but he also loves razor scooters. Out of everything, those two are definitely his go-to toys.

Scooter is always a great idea and it's getting nice out now so that would be perfect. But for an inside toy? My son loves ALPHIE. And the inno tab. My son is also getting big into sports so maybe like a sports package would be good. I don't know your nephew so I'm throwing out several ideas here lol. My son also recently received a football bank that talks when you put money in it, maybe you could do that and put your desired amount of money inside for him? Crayola is also always a good gift for younger kids because there is always so much to choose from and you can get a variety of things. Good Luck and I hope this helps :)

my son is 4 and we go to lots of 4yr old b-day parties! We almost always get something that is Batman related. They do start to really like the big action figures at this age.

But if you are willing to go big, my son's absolute favorite item is his bike. 14 inch bike with training wheels.

My son is only 2, but he loves to go once a week to "soccer". It's a kids program for ages 18 months to 9 years called Lil Kickers. You could check and see if they have one in your / his area. It's a lot of fun!

I have a lot of suggestions but it depends on the kid. Is he an active, outdoors, sport loving kid or quieter, sit and play calmly kind of kid? Mine are crazy active and love anything they can do outdoors, whether it be winter or summer. Anything from bikes to scooters, lacrosse set, junior golf clubs, roller blades, baseball glove and tee, street hockey, big wheels....and yes I have a 2 year and 5 year old who play with all of these! As for something calmer, my boys absolutely love the Playmobil sets. Easier to put together than some of the Lego sets and don't fall apart like Lego's but encourage the same type of play.

My son was crazy about fancy marble runs when he was 4. Like the Techno Gears Marble Mania Mega. It's really cool. He also was crazy about riding his bike and razor scooter. He also really enjoyed hot wheels tracks - he had a ton of them!

For outdoor, my 4 year olds like soccer (with net) and street hockey (with net). We also have some baseball tees that they like and a lacrosse set but they aren't that good with the lacrosse stuff yet.

For indoor, they like matchbox/hotwheel cars and trains. We also have a hot wheels on the wall track system that they like. It's nice because it gets it off the floor, but you'd have to check if the parents are okay with putting it on the wall (uses that wall stick stuff that is supposed to be removable but I haven't tested that part yet).

One of mine really likes the hockey guy figures. They also have other sports for the figures. Here's a sample link: http://www.amazon.com/Kaskey-Kids-Hockey-Guys-Yellow/dp/B...

Remote control cars are also popular. We have the bounce back racer type that flip over (although it's not the Tonka one that I saw when I looked on Amazon, but that might be similar). They can be indoor or outdoor. We've mostly used them indoor in our (small) kitchen because they have a lot of fun with the bounce back nature of it that way.

We gave them a kiddie sized foosball table as well, but I have twins so they can play together. It may not be as much fun if there isn't a sibling (or other person) that can sit and play with him.

Other smaller stuff my kids like are books and board games.

honestly, my very active sons loved everything at age 4....even girly stuff! (they both had girl cousins their age.) :)

but age 4 can be a great transition time period. That's when reading became a focus of interest for both of them. Even with 9 years between my sons, they both chose Dr. Seuss for their 1st readers. My older son's 1st book to read was "Hop on Pop"....& my younger son started with "Go, Dog, Go" & "Are You My Mother?".

So perhaps, since everything else seems to be covered, how about some great book selections? Anything nature-based would also be excellent!
