What's Your Morning Drink of Choice?

I am thinking I need to get off of coffee. I haven't gotten quite that far in my book, but I think I read somewhere else that TMJ disorder (jaw pain) can be aleviated if I get off of coffee. So I think I will wean myself as I finish my creamer I just bought. So what do you ladies drink for breakfast. Coffee? Smoothies? Milk? Water? Juice? Tea? What's good? I normally take my coffee with sugar and cream, so feel free to suggest just about anything (ie, it doesn't have to be low fat or anything). I don't normally drink milk, but am thinking that would be a healtheir alternative to coffee! Thoughts? THANKS to everyone!

ADDED: I posted a question a few months ago about TMJ. Basically I cannot open my jaw as wide as I used to. Oct/Nov/Dec of last year, it was popping a lot, but I could open it wide. Since the new year, I cannot open it wide at all. Chili dogs and big burgers and such are not easy to eat. TMJ doctor is not covered on my insurance. But I just got a book and one person who reviewed the book said something about how eliminating coffee from her diet helped her. I do not chew gum at all (haven't in about 4 years). I do notice when I ate jelly beans the other day that my jaw hurt more too, so those are out of my diet now too.

I look forward to all of y'alls suggestions. I do drink water all day after my coffee is gone, with the exception of a soda 2-3 days a week and a glass of wine 1 or 2 nights. I will probably try out y'alls suggestions and see what I like best. Also, I gotta read more in my book to see if it's the caffeine or what in the coffee that I might need to eliminate.

So What Happened?

Yes it is the caffeine that affects the tension in the jaw. I plan to try the half-caff or just plain decaff. The past few days I have had water and milk before I gave myself any coffee. I think I may prefer the water/milk/apple routine, as those are all more healthier for me than all the cream and sugar I put in coffee and tea (i have heard coconut milk has wonderful properties). I could afford to lose 5 lbs or so. I bet skipping the sugar and cream would help.

I drink french-press coffee every single morning!!! (3 large cups) with 2 % milk, and lots of it! :) Then I drink only water for the rest of the day. I used to have issues with TMJ back in high school. I gave up chewing gum and my issues went away. I never heard of coffee affecting TMJ...hmm, interesting!

Switch to 1/2 caff coffee... that's what I did. I drink coffee until it's gone, then water the rest of the day... until cocktail time!! LOL!

I use fat free french vanilla creamer in my coffee and that's it. I also use less coffee grinds than I should per cup of water.

Good luck getting off coffee, there's NOTHING like it ;)

I am aching with a TMJ headache this am. I know your pain. I have a mouthguard I bought at Target that helps a lot. I did have a really pricey one from the dentist but my dog ate it and I refuse to spend $500 again and waste it like that. The one from Target does work pretty well.

My drink of choice is ICE cold water first think in the morning. I am on my 3rd glass now.

I usually drink a cup of caffee latte. When I was pregnant I couldn't stand coffee and milk, so I usually had a glass of OJ. If I had to stop coffee now, I'd probably switch to warm milk with a bit of chocolate powder. That's what my boys have for breakfast.

Milk in my cereal and 100% juice. I really like the morning pick-me-up feeling of orange juice.

Also look into herbal tea. There are a lot of flavors out there that are naturally caffeine free. My favorites (although usually only in the winter) are Apple Cinnamon Spice, Peppermint, and Berry Zinger (or something like that...) Most herbal teas are located on the same aisle as the coffee. Celestial Seasonings has always been my favorite brand.

Glowing green smoothie:

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups water
1 head organic romaine lettuce, chopped
3-4 stalks organic celery
1/2 head of a large bunch or 3/4 of a small bunch of spinach
1 organic apple, cored and chopped
1 organic pear, cored and chopped
1 organic banana
Juice of 1/2 fresh organic lemon

optional:
1/3 bunch organic cilantro (stems okay)
1/3 bunch organic parsley (stems okay)

Directions:
Add the water and chopped head of romaine to the blender. Starting the blender at low speed, mix until smoothi. Gradually moving to higher speeds, add the celery, apple and pear. Add the cilantro and parsley, if you are choosing to add them. Add the banana and lemon juice last.• Try to drink at least 16-24 ounces a day, if not more! Stir before you drink!

• Feel free to mix your greens and fruits, as greens and fruits food combine well together (except for melons). Be sure to balance the light and darker greens, so for instance, if you want to add some kale, be sure to balance with the lighter green of celery. Bill the anchor today, mentioned he didn’t like cilantro. No problem! Just leave it out and use another green instead, or up the quantities of the other greens.

• * If you are diabetic and prefer to cut out all high glycemic fruit, you can omit the banana. Otherwise, I suggest keeping it in, as it adds a nice consistency and taste.

• ** It is important to blend until all “chunks” are removed from the mixture. There are a lot of nutrients encased into the cell walls of the green plants, and these need to be ruptured so full nutrition is available upon consumption without much digestive work. If you don’t have a great blender, you may have to blend longer and the smoothie will get warm. In that case, be sure to make it the night before, so it will be nice and cool by breakfast time!

My Mom has a very good dentist.
It is a jaw problem... and can also be aggravated by the way you clench your jaw and how you hold your posture/neck/shoulders etc.
Or it can be a bad mouth bite etc.
A good Dentist, can tell.
My Mom's Dentist, could tell.

I think changing your coffee may be a start but TMJ has more to do with grinding your teeth probably in your sleep. I suggest asking your regular physician about some ideas, possible a muscle relaxer (mild) before bed time, and as someone else suggested a mouth guard to keep in place while you sleep. I had this problem a long time ago. Sad to say I was young and doing stimulants at the time, once I stopped doing that it went away. But it wasn't morning coffee. I know this may not be your problem but I mention it to say that for me it did go away without any costly doctor visits.I might also suggest a relaxing bedtime routine starting an hour or so before bed, a bubble bath, a book, meditation, something that you do nightly so that after it becomes routine your body starts responding to it by relaxing and getting tired.

Apologies if this has already been mentioned, but I wonder if it's not coffee specifically that is causing the issue. I know when I have a considerable amount of caffeine (usually 2-3 cups of coffee in the morning) I have a tendency to clench my jaws unknowingly throughout the day. Most of the time I'm not even aware that I'm doing it until I wake up the next morning with soreness in my jaw. The same thing happens if I have more than 2 energy drinks in the morning so I've found that if I do indulge and drink that much, that I have to be very mindful to not clench my teeth together throughout the day, otherwise the next day (and sometimes 2-3 days afterwards) my jaws are so sore that even eating is a challenge. In fact, I've done it so bad that my neck muscles are sore and tender for 1-3 days afterwards. Best of luck M.!

CHOCOLATE MILK.....as cold as I can get it, as soon as my feet hit the floor...for 20+ years now!
Re: the tmj..I feel your pain. I have been dealing with it since my twenties, and I am 47 now. Off limits for sure...apples, caramel apples....must be cut up! No raw bagels, must be toasted..easier on the jaw....as you know...no gum....seems to really aggravate it. I have noticed that mine is worse when I am stressed, or if I have overdone it some how with activities like painting with a roller, over my head activities, or I have been too cold and tense for too long. About 15 years ago, someone ran a red light and t-boned me,I have had neck issues ever since. When the area between my shoulder blades and neck get sore from any of the above, my jaw is sore too....one thing is connected to the next to the next, and when this muscle is tight it pulls that way on the next one and so forth. I have noticed that getting that area massaged when it is sore or I am stressed will help my jaw discomfort immensely! Sleeping on the right pillow helps too....make sure that your neck is supported and that your neck and head are in correct alignment and that your pillow is keeping your neck/head bent all night. Lastly, if there is ANY chance that you are grinding or clenching your teeth in your sleep..if you can't see a tmj Dr. or dentist/orthodontist...try some mouth guards that they sell in the toothpaste / whitening area of the store. You can get some pretty inexpensively, put them in hot water and mold them to your mouth, it will really help with your jaw pain! Good luck

I can't have caffeine and was told to start the day with an apple. The crunching is supposed to help wake you up. (Sorry if I am repeating someone.) I don't know if that would be hard for you to eat - maybe wedges... I take a liquid vitamin every morning so I'm sure that has helped give me energy. I feel so much more healthy and energetic without the caffeine.

Got to have my coffee. Caf or decaf, I don't care. I need the warmth and smell for my morning routine. What's the scientific basis behind no coffee with TMJ? My mom has TMJ, I haven't heard of this. Is it the caffeine or one of the natural substances in the coffee? You can try warm tea. Lastly, I used to drink it black. Now I add cream...shucks, wish I had never gotten in this habit. My dad used to drink his with cream and sugar. He once had a person say, drink it black and you'll never go back. That's exactly what happened. Now he's trying to get my husband to quit the cream and sugar.

I try to limit the amount I spend at Starbucks, so I only get 2-3 drinks a month from them. When I do get something it is either a mocha, latte or iced mocha. I will change it up if I fancy something else that day.

Stopping by McD's it is either a mocha, frappicino or iced mocha.

At home it is a cup of coffee with a specail creamer added, usually internation delights dark chocolate mocha sometimes chai tea. In the winter I mix half hot chocolate and half coffee.

Sometimes, very rarely and only when staying where I am I put a shot of bailey's in my coffee... mmmmmmm.

I have severe arthritis in my jaw apparently (just found out about a year ago). But it explains my facial pain and likely contributes to my lifelong migraines. Many things to stop...gum and any chewy food is a biggie (like steak thats too tough or beef jerky, etc...not just candy, etc).

This is what all my info from the Dr and Physical Therapist says about Caffine
~Avoid caffeine. Caffeine is a muscle contracture drug and can make your muscles tighter. Caffeine or caffeine-like drugs are in coffee, tea, soda, and chocolate~

I still drink coffee...but its very "lightly" brewed (I am a new convert to the stuff in the last 2 years or so..but I brew it very weak and add alot of splenda to sweeten it =). I also drink hot tea...different flavors like Earl Grey (a black tea..so still has caffeine)...any Green Tea will be better as they are caffeine free. I just like a hot drink(s) to sip on thru most of my day. Its a vice. My teenager is the same way..but for her its just tea.

She already shows signs of the jaw issues as well. Pain, popping. She has been banned from Gum already. Its horrible for your jaw, no matter who you are!

Good luck!

EDIT to your edit:
I did Physical Therapy at a local Head and Neck Clinic for 6 mos for mine (looking now for a facial massage therapy place that is covered by my insurace as a next phase as I felt the most benefit fromt hat part she did...but she can't do "just" that part from that place??)..anyhow, this is almost an exact copy of an initial info sheet I got from them and I try really hard to do ALL of these things. My "weak" coffee they said was better than strong stuff if I wasn't ging to give it up totally. Its the amount of caffeine intake. But here ar ehte other tips. Heat packs every day. No gum. Soft food, etc. It has all made a difference for me.

I would not go to milk. Not good for you and fattening.

I'm embarrassed to admit that my morning drink is about four ounces of Wild Cherry Diet Pepsi. Yes, I know what you're thinking. I gave up coffee a long time ago, and tea just doesn't give me the little caffeine lift that helps me in the morning, so I do this. It's the last bit of my soda "habit," and I don't seem to want any more caffeine than that.

And lots of water! Actually, I have a glass of water first thing, and more during the day. I won't let myself have, um, that other stuff until I've had part of my water quota.

I occasionally get TMJ from stress, but not regularly. TMJ is not my friend, either. I often find, when it pops up, that I have been grinding my teeth. My dentist helped me a lot with dealing with it.

Starbucks coffee with French vanilla creamer. I use the Pike's Peak Roast made @ home.

Sometimes, on the drive to work, I crave a fountain Coke & get one for the caffeine.

My kids & I also like a smoothie in the AM... I "cheat" & buy a premade pack of either banana or strawberry (found by the bananas @ Target) then add ice, yogurt, milk, & the fruit. It is very tasty.

One last thing, if you need a "caffeine" pick-me-up WITHOUT the caffeine... eat an apple. It will give you more energy than the caffeine. Since you have TMJ, cutting up the apple would work.

Good luck!!

I avoid caffine as well. I rarely keep coffee in the house and consider it now a special treat. I do however, love Dandy Blend. It's generally only available for purchase online. It's made of dandelion root crushed and ground, so it looks like instant coffee. The drink is hot and has a bitter taste like coffee. I drink it just like coffee, with a little milk and sometimes cocoa powder.
