Do You Drink Coffee?

yeah... probably a dumb question right? I love the smell of coffee and my mouth almost salivates when I see people with those take out coffee cups that they carry around BUT.... I can't stand the taste of it. However, I'm (almost) addicted to my General Foods International coffee, sugar free french vanilla (not the decaf one). It really has no 'coffee' taste to it but more like a hot vanilla beverage. I would drink this stuff all day if I could! :) But it's got fat in it and it adds up. So I would love it if I could find a brew coffee that is sweet without the fat. Regular coffee is so bitter... I tried it with milk and with sugar but it just tastes like nasty bitter drink with yucky added sugar. And years ago I was working an art festival outside and needed a pick me up... found a coffee shop, saw they had vanilla flavored coffee, got it, one sip and it was in the trash. Hardly vanilla, yucky bitter. Even with milk and sugar (I think the sugar made it even more undrinkable). Is there a coffee out there that isn't bitter tasting? I've tried various flavor brews, but its just not like my GFIC french vanilla. Why is it I love the smell so much but not the taste?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

You gals really like your coffee! I made the leap and tried a Starbucks vanilla latte..... I am not impressed. But since many of you suggested avoiding Starbucks, I will keep looking and trying the suggestions.

You should try making coffee, with a French Press.
Coffee tastes very different, with a French Press.
Less, acidic.

I drink it straight up. Just as is.

What you are liking in 'coffee' is the dessert taste.

Well I LOVE coffee, always have. But this is exactly how I feel about alcohol. I see a margarita or something and it looks like it will taste so good, but YUCK! I tried a wine cooler a while back and got through like half. If we have a good steak my hubby will get some wine and I try, really try to like it, but I just don't. So I have accepted that though the wine etc looks so nice in the bottle or glass or wherever, I just don't like it. Be glad you are a not coffee nut! One of the first things I do when I get up is pop the coffee pot on and I never run out of coffee, if that ever happens actually, when my kids get up we run to the store. It's ridiculous!!

I love coffee...and I'm the same as you! I hate the taste of black coffee!

Here's my secret to AMAZING coffee:

1. Get the good stuff. A medium blend/breakfast blend is great for coffee wussies like us.

2. Buy the liquid creamer. My favorite is Coffeemate Creme Brulee. It is AMAZING.

3. Pour a cup, but only fill it 3/4 full.

4. Fill the remaining 1/4 with creamer! It's already sweet, so you just have to stir. Don't be one of these types that only puts in a little bit...we coffee wussies want it to TASTE GOOD! ;o)

5. Never travel without your own creamer. The Coffeemate powdered "Sweet Italian Cream" will do in a pinch...but that plain creamer? NO WAY!

Enjoy being a coffee addict who loves to wussify your cup!

I am the same way! I so love that coffee smell. Years ago, I taught in a primary school in England for a summer internship and the entire school building had that old, musty, yummy coffee smell. Every once in awhile I will go into an older building and I am reminded of that yummy smell. BUT I hate the taste. Thought I would give mocha a try since anything with chocolate can't be bad, right? WRONG! Spit the stuff out after one sip. Can't even do mocha flavored chocolate candies either. I do love strong unsweetened tea though, which I always thought was ironic because tea is as bitter as they come. So I just get me a cup of hot tea or hot chocolate and pretend I am a cool with my cup coffee drinker! ( I laughed out loud at your salivates when I see people with their take-out coffee! Why do we do that? These people can't be THAT much cooler than us non-drinking types, can they??) Anyway, I see it as a blessing to my ever-growing arse and my pocketbook that I have managed to escape the Starbucks demographic! I don't think I answered your question at all, but I look forward to other moms' insight to this phenomenon!

I have loved coffee from a very young age, although when I first was given "coffee" it was more a splash of coffee with sugar and milk. Now I usually drink coffee with a bit of creamer ( enough to change the color) and I am a splenda girl...I like flavored coffees and specialty drinks and all different types of roasts...there is good coffee and bad coffee...but I like almost everything...coffee flavored candy, coffee flavored ice cream...I think it is probably one of those acquired tastes...I like your General foods imitation coffee drinks too, but I do not feel like they are real coffee...more like dressed up hot chocolate ( which I adore as well!!!)
You might want to try something that is a mild roast...it would be less bitter...and creamer is different than milk and they make tons of different flavored creamers now...but I will say, don't stress...not liking coffee is not a terrible thing= ) I consider it to be one of my few addictions ( Diet Dr.Pepper and chocolate are my other addictions! )

Try Toddy (cold expressed coffee). It's a milder buzz and has a sweeter more full taste. It's close to (well made) espresso, but has a slightly different flavor.

You might just be getting gross coffee. If your going through a drive through, it's entirely possible that your shots are under expressed. A good shot should run 23-28 seconds (1 oz, or .75 for ristretto). The grind should be checked and adjusted (during weather/pressure changes) after every shot. Under expressed espresso is thin and bitter. Over expressed will be burnt and yellow, like it's run through a cigarette filter. Either are yucky. Neither will give you beautiful crema. Milk is even tougher. It should not be "foamed", but stretched, then waked, then twirled. It should look like satin, and pour with gorgeous flourish.

Anyway. Sorry. I used to make coffee, and sometimes I get...into it.

My favorite part of the day is during that first cup of coffee. Like Susan, I make mine in a French Press. Here's how:

- Clean french press
- Heat water until ALMOST boiling (boiling will burn your grounds)
- DO NOT buy ground coffee. Coffee goes stale in 30 seconds. This is true.
- Grind your coffee so that it is rough to the touch, but consistent. They should be slightly more course than you would put in a drip. I like STRONG coffee, so I fill the press about an inch and fill the water to the silver line.
- Pour water over grind. Sit for one minute.
- Stir
- Place lid on top and let sit for 3 minutes. If you let it go longer your coffee will be *bitter*.
- Plunge ((carefully, I've gotten burned many a' time)).

I like a lot of cream, and a tbs of honey. It is a sensual and blissful beverage. Mmmmmm.

I despise gross coffee, but the good stuff? Makes waking up *possible*.

((Oh, the roast really matters too. This is the best in our area...and we're famous for coffee. http://www.stumptowncoffee.com/roasting))

This is common. I loved the smell only for many years before I developed a taste for it. I suggest that you keep drinking just a little regularly and you will eventually also enjoy the taste.

Yes! Try the liquid flavored creamers and use lots. That way the coffee does taste as good as your GFIC french vanilla. I'm remembering now that is how I got to liking coffee.

Oh man, I used to drink the GFIC ages ago. Blech.
No offense.
Dunkin' Donuts makes some nice coffee flavors that are a fairly light roast.
We also just had some Godiva coffee that was pretty yum.

Milk in coffee is gross. You need 1/2 and 1/2 or whipping cream.

You can buy flavored syrup if you like. I like just straight raw sugar.

And I know people love their flavored creamers but they are really bad for you.

Do you have a decent coffeepot? Does it need cleaned? Finding a grinds to water ratio that works best for you is part of the problem as well.
Everyday I put the same amount of grinds to the same amount of water and get a perfect cup for me.
My ratio is 1Tbspn grinds to 2 cups water.

HTH! Hope you find a good fit!

I don't drink coffee because of a religious vow. I've never felt the pressure to do it, and I've never particularly liked the taste when I HAVE tried it (although the smell is awesome - I'm with you on that). You aren't under any obligation to drink it. It isn't a societal must, although sometimes perhaps it seems like it is. If you don't like it, why drink it at all?

I love fat free sugar free vanilla steamers(you end up with the calories of a cup of skim milk), or it could be the type of brew chosen most at places like starbucks and gloria jeans are a little harsh, even caribou most are but they do have a light blend light roast and you can request heavy on the fat free milk and sugar free vanilla syrup. There is also Market Day mix that is a carmel latte mix that i have done both frozen and hot. You could also try hot tea with skim and either vanilla or caramel shot. good luck on the perfect brew for you.

Nope. I don't like coffee, and I REALLY dislike the smell. My dad has had a cup of coffee every morning since he was a teenager. My first memories of coffee, were waking up to the smell of it brewing on an empty stomach. It always made me want to vomit. I can't smell coffee without thinking of that!!

So many people tell me to keep trying it and I will develop a liking for it. Umm...why would I want to subject myself to drinking something, I don't like...just to maybe like it someday? It's such a strange suggestion! I never did understand that logic.

I drink decaf coffee- on the weekends if we go out to breakfast, with lots of milk and sugar. During the week, I drink plain diluted iced coffee, either instant or I'll make a pot of coffee and save it in the fridge. When it's so diluted with ice, it reminds me of iced tea.
I think the longer you let the pot sit on the hotplate, the more acidic and bitter the coffee gets.

You might just be getting bad coffee. My husband and I are coffee hobbyists; about half of our kitchen is devoted to coffee and espresso, and we drink it every day. Good coffee is sometimes difficult to find, and it depends on a lot of factors. You need to take into consideration to the roast, the freshness/roast date and rest time, the grind, and the method of brewing. GOOD coffee does NOT taste bitter. Bitter coffee is a sign that the coffee is not fresh, over roasted, or over extracted. A good cup of coffee has tasting notes that you can pick out (just like wine), is smooth, and has a well-rounded profile. If you lived near us, I'd invite you over and show you what I mean. :)

I drink coffee with milk- no sugar. I think sugar ruins the coffee... I don't no why... and artificial creamer--- ugh, THE WORST. So, try it with just milk or half and half...

Also, have you tried other things? I love chia tea lattes (my favorite at home is oregan chai). Match green tea is also good (in a latte it oddly reminds me of the flavor of shredded wheat) They may not have as much caffeine, but they do have it. I love coffee, but I have to admit it is also what gets me "going in the morning"

As far as brands... we drink folger's house blend most often, and sometimes by local coffee brews when we want to treat ourselves. Make sure you have a good coffee maker... and don't burn your coffee! that makes it 10 times more bitter!

Have you ever tried a cold brew? I have a special thing called a Toddy coffee maker, but you could TOTALLY do it yourself with a jar, a filter (or paper towel) and a strainer. Also, if you are sensitive to bitterness, avoid Starbucks - their coffe tends toward bitter. Try beans from Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, and do a mild roast.

Well, the smell of coffee isn't bitter...but the taste is. There are probably a thousand varieties of real coffee, but they all taste bitter to different degrees. I personally don't like my coffee black, but I do drink a TON of coffee with sugar. In fact, I'm drinking some now (decaf...I haven't had real coffee in almost two years because of nursing.)

Sugar...well, I add sugar, and I add enough. For each six ounces I'm drinking, I add a "formula" scoop of sugar. I think that's about a tablespoon...I forget...I've had that formula scoop for about six years! :) So in a small mug, one scoop, and in a large "to go" type plastic travel mug, I put two. I only use real sugar...I do not like Splenda, Stevia, or any other artificial sweeteners.

You aren't going to like the taste of any of it immediately...it's an acquired taste, and it's a lot different than what you've been drinking, which isn't really coffee. I'd say give it a week of drinking every day, and you could acclimate yourself to the taste.

As far as health goes, coffee is good for you, and although the sugar I add isn't, it's about the only sugar I consume all day so I totally forgive myself for it.

If nothing else, you could try a flavored creamer in your coffee. They come in about a million different flavors! :)

I do drink coffee... I like a lot of the different flavored creamers & use sugar too. Plus, Maxwell House makes a good French Vanilla Coffee grounds.

Now, bitter coffee... I do agree coffee can be very bitter. The more grounds you use the stronger & bitter it gets. I only use 4 scoops (4 Table Spoons) of grounds in my 12 cup coffee pot, but since I don't drink that much I have cut back to 2 scoop for 6 cups. If you read the coffee making instructions it says 1 scoop per 6 oz cup... which means I should be using 12 scoops - sorry but that would be NASTY.

When we go camping - I have to bring other "morning" drinks cause they make way to strong of coffee, they follow the directions - lol... adding water doesn't even help make it drinkable for me.

For me the perfect cup of coffee is the "weak" coffee I make w/ 1 1/2 spoons of sugar and 2 spoons of powdered creamer (1 regular & 1 flavored). I also like the GFIC french vanilla and carmal vanilla... but the cost keeps me away from them some. Maybe if you play with it some - you can find your perfect cup as well.

You may need to try a mild coffee. I can't stand regular strength coffee - it is bitter no matter how much cream is in it. I drink Starbucks Breakfast Blend and use less coffee than directed. I use 1/2 & 1/2 instead of milk - it makes a huge difference. My husband makes fun of me b/c he says it is watered down coffee BUT I like it! He drinks espresso so of course he doesn't like my weak coffee. You can flavor your coffee w/ vanilla flavoring.
