What's a Good Rate for an Adult Babysitter?

My neighbor is going to babysit for us, and she's the mom of a 7-month old. She's absolutely wonderful and I want to pay her. What's the going rate for an adult babysitter? And do you have any suggestions for how I can pay her - I'm afraid she'll refuse the money! :-) She's going to watch our 2-week old for 8 hours or so, and I simply wouldn't trust anyone else except a family member (and they are not able to come up for it). So I really appreciate what she's doing.

What can I do next?

I agree with the person who suggested a gift card. I'd recommend somewhere like Publix. After all, everyone goes grocery shopping, so a gift card like that is as good as cash. It's not anywhere fancy, but you know she will use it. Put it in with a nice note thanking her and I'm sure she will think you are very generous.

well here is an idea, instead of paying her collect the money and send her and her husband out to a romantic dinner one night and you watch their kid. You could also buy her/and or her child a gift and surprise her/her child from time to time. That's being appreciative without having to give her money. Prob. she won't want money because she's your friend and she wants to do it to help you out, besides always remember when money is involved things get ugly. not inless your willing to pay he $20 an hour =) otherwise she might find $5 an hour offensive. My best idea is surprise her from time to time with gifts this way everyones happy. Wish you the best =)

I have a 17 year old babysitter who always provides his own transportation, is very flexible, will cook for my son, etc. Really nice guy and a great influence on my son (I am a single mom). I pay him $10 an hour.
In your particular case though I would offer to trade off babysitting her child for a similar length of time. She would probably appreciate that a lot more than money, and with both your kids' being so young it might turn into a great system as your kids grow. Best wishes!

find out where she loves to shop and get her a Gift Card...Drop it in her mail-box addressed and all so she does open it...just add alittle note stating how you feel about her doing this for you and your little angel.
i hope that helps
