What's a Fair Price for This Used Wing Set?

Our neighbor asked us if we want to buy their swing set... I do't know the brand.
It's about 6 yrs old or so. It has a fort on top w/a fabric roof, a slide, ladder, small rock climbing wall, 2 swings, a trapeeze and a swinging ladder of ropes and a pair of binoculars and telescope.
????? They've kept it stained pretty well. We'd have to take down and move, and it is NOT cemented in... my research shows about $800-$1300 for this set new
thanks

Yes, it's good that they stained it but... there are so many brand names and some of the swing sets have better hardware on them. Sounds like a cool set and it seems like it has a few unique features so you may be able to locate it on-line.

How is it secured in the ground? Like previous post - check if it is cemented.

Sounds like an awesome set - I always go by the rule ---"he who names the first price, loses!" theory... If you say $200 and she becomes totally offended - you've lost. If she says... $100, you can always come back and say "Oh, that's too low, how about $150??? Win/win. If this were my swing set, I'd have an idea of how much would be a good offer to see it leave. To have someone else disassembling it - that's probably worth a lot to her.

I love bargaining but I wouldn't want to offend anyone. Also... like your previous post said, she MAY want to rid herself of it MORE than you want it. Definitely a bargaining chip there!

Good luck.

I agree with Ellen, just ask them straight out how much do you want for the set. Also one this my husband would say is once anything made of wood is put together it is hard to move is without twisting or damaging it in some way. And if you take it apart then you have to make sure to get longer screws when you put it back together.
We decided just to give our swing set to a family at our church because we did not want to deal with what you are looking at. How much is it worth. I just don't think a used swing set is worth that much. Really depends on how much they ask and how much you want it.

I would say anywhere between the price that you researched for the new one. For what you described it seems to be in tip top shape and will accommodate loads of fun for your children. Try negotiating and maybe you might get a good price. Be safe, be fair and good luck :-)

Hi S.. It sounds like a really nice playset but I to recommend searching new ones. If it is a rainbow set, they are extremely expensive, however you can buy kits (we did) from Home Depot or toys r us and put it together much cheaper. We bought ors at Home Depot and my husbnad put ours together 16 yrs ago and we STILL have it. The thing is if you have to take it down, which can be a hassle and headache in itself you might jut be better off buying a new one since you will be putting it up yourself anyway. Usually when people tell you to take it down they are giving it away. Your probably doing them a favor and then paying for it??? I think you can get a kit for a decend price and it will be brand new and easier to put up with no wheather parts. Good Luck

Also, how is it in the ground? Ours was cemented in deep. To get it out we had to ruin the support legs.

Research. Ask what brand it is. If you feel comfortable even ask how much they paid for it. If it's cheap wood (like a put together from Menards) it's now worth much. If it's high quality wood, I'd pay more. I researched lots of playsets for my family this spring and they ranges from $1200-$5000! We ended up buying a high quality 10 year old set from craigslist. My husband tested everything out to make sure it was good quality and stable. He then took it apart and rebuilt it at our house.
Good Luck!

I would do a bit of research. I would look online to see how much new ones are and then go to craigslist and see how much people are charging for used ones.

I don't know how well you know your neighbors, but they might be desperate to get rid of it, which might give you some bargaining power. Unless you take it, then they would have to find someone else or pay to have it taken down.
