What Should a 1 Year Old's Meals and Snacks Look Like?

My 1-year-old is being weaned off of his formula so I want to make sure that his meals and snacks give him all the vitamins/nutrition that he needs but its hard to figure out how much food he really needs. My dr. told me 16-24 oz. of dairy a day but what about everything else? I read somewhere that a meal should consist of a grain, a meat, a veggie/fruit and a dairy and that snacks should have at least two of those components. Does that sound right? What does your 1-year-old's menu look like? Thanks!

What can I do next?

My 1 year old eats what we do. We have adjusted the family diet to have no processed foods. She loves pastas - so I mix in squash to make sure she gets a veggie.
On days when she won't eat or we are on the run a lot and meals are not as good as they should be I give her a pediasure (normally the store brand because they are cheaper). These are not an all the time solution, just once in a while. That way I know she is getting the vitamins she needs.

i give my kids the food we eat ,
his plate looks like this

one side(rice with brocoli, corn)(spaguietti wiith carrots)
meat (5 pieces of chicken, ground turkey meat)
veggies(steamed brocoli,carrots,couliflower,sweet potatoe,mushrooms)

and then a small cookie

the snacks usually is a small plate with apples, banana, apple pure with cinamon, papaya, mango, or goldfish.saltines,

they still takes about 15 oz. milk a day one in the morning and one in the night.

Offer a variety of healthy foods. Offer what you are eating if it is appropriate for a baby. If its something like chicken just chop it finely. Do him a huge favor and don't feed him junk until he's older. (I'm sure you don't plan to because you are very concerned about his menu, which is great!) It works to create good eating habits. Unlike our generation!!! If he doesn't eat much one day don't freak out, it's normal. You might make him the nicest well balanced plate of food only to have him eat one item. Its going to be a learning experience for both of you. Its good to pay close attention at this age in case food sensitivies or allergies arise.

I personally like to make casserole type meals that I can freeze portions for a rainy day when I can't pull off cooking. My son also likes pastas so I'll grab some whole wheat pasta and make homemade mac n cheese, mix in tuna or shredded chicken/turkey then mix in some mixed frozen veggies. Sometimes I will mix squash in like another poster mentioned. Its easy, freezes pretty well and my son seems to like it. He also likes spaghetti that I also make with whole wheat pasta and make sauce that is a little less spicy than what we would eat and I mix cooked ground turkey in usually. He eats a lot of what we eat too, even pizza because I make that myself as well (bread machines are awesome for making pizza dough!) and make it kid friendly. He also likes toast.. whole wheat bread with peanut butter or some kind of puree on it which is also a good way to use up the last of your baby food. Yogurts are great just watch the sugar content and make sure its full fat. Cut up cheeses, fruits, soft veggies etc. I like to try to keep beech nut meals around for times when I can't cook and there's nothing for me to pull out of the freezer for him.

Hi S.S I don't think you have to stick with a strict amount of something, no two days will be the same, one day he will eat this tomorrow he won't, At one, I did dry cherrios, small bit size peaces of fruit, crackers, in the store they have this snack that is shaped like cheese puffs, but their tomato, or other veggies, their are all kids of toddle snack that dessolve in their mouths so if they don't have teeth yet it's ok. My 15 moth old in my daycare loves dry honeycomb cereal. Also what I did for mine and what i do for daycare they eat what we eat, when I cook before I season everything I take a portion out for the kids, the small ones I put it in the bullet and chop it up up, I also make mashed potatoes and I put chicken or beef with vegetables mix it together my kids loved it and my daycare kids love it, and the good thing is veggies they wont eat, they will mixed in with potatoes.
