What Is Life like with Older Teens and a Baby?

I was't planning on getting pregnant in April of this year, but I did and I had a miscarriage several weeks ago. Since we were so excited about the pregnancy, we were thinking of mayby possibly trying to have another one. I have two girls age 16 and 8, the older one will be going to college in 2013, just a few months after the baby is born (if I get pregnant right away). What is life like when the kids are so far apart in age? Am I crazy for possibly wanting to start all over with a newborn? I am 34 years old.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

thanks Everyone! It's great to hear from others' experiences. We are still thinking about it, but hope to make a decision real soon! I am leaning toward yes. :)

I'm 32. I have a 16 year old and a 2 year old. Just be prepared to not have the peace and quite you were looking forward to for another 20 years.

My kids are 17, 8 and 3. They were all spaced out and I couldn't imagine it any other way. I'm not sure I could handle 3 little ones all at once so for us this was perfect. The only way it will be different is just getting back in to the routine of bottles and diapers. And your other two are old enough that jealousy shouldn't be an issue.
Good luck!

My sister and I are 12y apart and my brother and I are 15 yrs apart. It will be like you have two families. There is a good chance, if your older goes away to college that she will NOT be close to the baby.

Now I am 38, my sis is 26 and my brother is 23. My sis and I are close because we live near each other and see each other often. My brother and I have a relationship, but he is currently on the West Coast and so we are not close. When he was younger we were close.

My oldest is 16 and my youngest is 3. It works great for us. All my kids love having the each other and it doesn't seem to bother them. I come from a long line of big Catholic families. One of my uncles is a year younger than I am and another a year older. We loved it growing up. We always had someone to drive us and another to play with.

It all works out in the end especially when they are older.

I have a toddler & a teen. It was hard when he was born but better now.

There are definitely jealousy issues that I didn't expect at that age but all
of that is normal.

The wide age spread has been difficult but pleasurable too!

I say it all works. It's all good. Life is good. Take it all in. Life has a way of working itself out.

My last 2 are 7 years apart. Every situation has pros & cons. The biggest adjustment for me, was was having to wake up in the middle of the night. I don't handle broken sleep, well.

I think it is different for everyone. My step children were 8 & 16 when my daughter was born and I was 36. At the time they lived with their mom full time and came over every weekend. This was hell for me (even though they are great kids) trying to keep my daughter on a schedule. By the time my daughter turned 2 my SS moved in with us and my daughter looked forward to seeing her big sister on the weekends.

The biggest problem now is with a 13 year old and 21 year old my hubby tends to spend more time with the bigger kids doing things they enjoy (stuff that is more age appropriate) and my daughter is left feeling alone. There will be ups and downs but your family will all need to work together and adjust.
