What Does One Wear to a Wine Tasting?

I don't drink wine, and the person I'm going with doesn't drink, period. We're just going for the experience.

Point is, I've never been to a vineyard and I have no idea what to expect. What does one wear to a wine tasting? What can I expect? You don't actually go out tromping around the vineyard, do you? I'm kind of expecting an introduction to the vineyard, then talk about the wine, then tasting of the wine with more talking... am I far off? Are heels appropriate or is that overkill?

What would YOU wear to a wine tasting? What has your experience been?

What can I do next?

It's pretty casual, though like anything else some people dress up a little more than others. I say dress as if you are going on a lunch date, but comfortable. Something like a linen skirt, pretty top, lightweight sweater and cute but comfy sandals (heels are fine.) Does that make sense?
I hope you are going to more than one winery, it's such a fun way to spend the day! Typically you do the tasting in a designated tasting room, and there's usually a pretty outdoor area to take in the views of the vineyard, a wide porch or patio or something like that.
Have fun!!!

nice casual, and NO WHITE. Cause there will be a lot of spit going on, and dripping, and dropping. I made the this mistake ONCE. I liked it, I went to a wine and cheese tasting, and a genuine vineyard tasting, I am not a wine fan but I like the social aspect.

We go wine tasting quite often. It's very casual. You can go in slacks or jeans, or a sundress, linen skirt, etc. If you are just going for tasting, you won't be going out into a field. But if you are doing some special group thing, it's possible they will take you on a tour of either the vineyard or wine caves. Find out the specifics so you know what kind of shoes to wear. I usually wear sandals, no heels. You want to be comfortable.

Hi R.:
I would be casually elegant. If I were going, i would wear fancy good fitting jeans or black pants, and a nice top. Good shoes and bag. Comfortable and put together. as if you were going out with lady friends for coffee.

and i would not wear white :) in case you get spilled on.

as for shoes, i would go for lower vs. higher heels as you may need to be on your feet for a while.

have fun.

I went to a winery for a bachelorette party and most people were dressed casually. We actually had a sort of picnic outside, it was pretty warm so I was glad I wore shorts.

If you are a dress kinda gal, then a fun sun dress would be perfect. No, you don't tromp through the vineyard. :) Usually the wine testing is basically they talk a little about the wines and give you samples. I would really recommend eating before you go and snacking during. Wine sneaks up on you!

Heels are fine. I was expecting to be bored out of my mind, but it really was a lot of fun!

All the vineyards around here are casual. So I think it varies by vineyard. Then again even in Tuscany we dressed casual. Thing is you are generally outside, too hot for stuffy clothes.

It is very rare that you go out into the vineyards. They don't want people near the grapes. They sometimes will take you to the vineyard but you don't go in. Most of the time you are in the tasting room and there tends to be an outside area that overlooks the vineyard.

There isn't a lecture time, you pick a wine to taste, if you ask they tell you about it. I suppose a more structured wine tasting where you don't pick they might.

Sad face I have never been given a tour!!! I have been shown a little bit of the barrels they come from but never an opportunity to lose my heels in dirt.

It was more like a bar area where the person could make suggestions for tasting or maybe you had you own. The later in the day, the dressier I got. The couple of times in Napa it was actually blazing hot so I didn't dress like I was on a fancy date. Heels for me were fine for me in The Temecula Valley and Napa.

Have fun!

I wouldn't be going if I didn't drink wine....but I'll assume it's a fundraiser or something! Dressy casual is the way to go. In Napa, we didn't go tromping around the vineyard...mostly it was al fresco on a patio area or in the wine tasting area.

I have been to two different ones, The first they did walk us out a little bit to the vineyards.. The other, we stood on a patio area that overlooked the vineyard..

Sundress and cute sandals.

Cute skirt and top..

You will not have to drink the wine.. Just taste and spit..
You may learn to appreciate the taste! Bonus!

There really is no "code" per say, but winetasting is a sorta classy event, so dress a little on the classier side, IMO. Whatever you wear, avoid heels. Good chance you may be walking over grassy and sandy areas and your heels will get damaged from all that grinding into the dirt. Think ballet flats or neat thong sandals. Something comfy in case the tasting may involve a walkthrough or tour of the vineyard where the wine is made.

If the weather is nice, you may want to wear a pretty sundress, something light yet comfy to move in. If not, I have worn jeans, maybe dressed up a little more than mommy-in-the-park wear, like maybe a blazer or something breezy and light on top.

I would perhaps also think twice about anything that may fly up (short skirt) or, like, say, your hair you may want a little pinned back, since I recall spending more time outdoors that I thought I would when I went winetasting.

On the other hand, it is easy to look too dressed down for it. I went with a crew once and one woman had on super-short shorts, that sweatpants material, and a spaghetti strap top with plastic flip flops. She looked like a college chick going off the the local laundrymat -- too dressed down. She stood out in a bad way.

I have never been to a vineyard, just the winery where it's made and tasted. It was casual, but if you're going to be in a vineyard, I wouldn't wear anything with thin heels as you will sink into the ground. Eat plenty before going- I haven't been to the fancy ones where you spit it out- we have always drunk it all!

The last wine festival/tasting I went to was in the middle of a field.
Heels would have been impossible.
Office casual or dressy casual is fine.
Since we went to a festival and there were many vineyards represented, we picked a type of wine (Riesling) and sampled around until we found one we liked best.
Have fun!

A bib! JK.

I've been to Napa and Sonoma and wore whatever I wanted. Besides, after some tastings, you'll be too carefree to stress!

Unless you want to dress up, there is really no dress code.

Hmmm. If you're not going to taste the wine I think you'll feel out of place. The focus is on tasting wine.

I've seen all sorts of dress, from jeans and a tank with tenny runners to a nice sundress with heels.

Later: You could call the vineyard and ask how the do their wine tasting event.

Having lived in Sonoma County with many friends who worked at the wineries (and made more than a few visits LOL) ... it's generally pretty casual. But it's also a pretty individual thing. I've seen everywhere from booty shorts and bikini tops to some pretty top label designer cocktail dresses.

Wear what you're most comfortable in with comfortable flat shoes in case they take you on a short tour of the vines or processing area.

Enjoy the experience. although I'm not sure what the point of going to a wine tasting is if you don't drink it ... the point of a wine tasting is to taste the wines a vineyard offers to find the one(s) you like ... thereby purchasing the wines :)

I've been to quite a few vineyards in the Virginia/Maryland area. Dress in whatever your most comfortable in. Think picnic atmosphere. I've only had a tour at one vineyard. It's not standard to go tromping through the vines. If you're planning to make a day of it bring your own food. Most places don't sell anything more than cheese plates. Have fun and enjoy the beautiful scenery!

Business casual, like slacks or a skirt and a nice top. Maybe a sun hat since it's outdoors. Sensible shoes for walking outside, and little bug spray around the ankles.
