I think a dress is fine. It is always better to be better dressed than underdressed. I feel for a lot of those occasions there will always be a wide diversity of dress.

Friday night I am going to a dinner at Joe's Steakhouse and Seafood in Chicago. This is with a large group of my husband's coworkers. My husband and his coworkers will be in work attire which on Fridays is a little more casual. The men will be mostly wearing business casual. I bought a dress (nice but still casual, summery style with some fall colors). My husband thinks I will be too dressed up. This will be the first time I am meeting all of my husband's boss, coworkes and their spouses. I don't want to be too casual. Is a dress appropriate?
I believe most of my husband's coworkers live in the city and probably have a different idea of what is casual/dressy than my husband and I do.

Maybe a cute skirt and a casual top. The last job I worked at was jeans casual, and I would get so tired of that and wear a cute dress or skirt to work many times. If you chose the dress, then were it with flats or cute sandals to make it more casual.
I would go with black pants or capris. It sounds like the guys will be wearing Dockers pants with polo shirts, so the dress would be a little too much. I would bet that since it's a casual day, most of the women would be wearing capris or pants with a more casual top.
I think a dress is fine, a summer sundress is nice and dresses are so hip right now. You can dress it down with accessories & shoes. Remember most places are overly air conditioned, so keep in mind you might get cold! And since you said you never get out of T-shirt & jeans, go for it, have fun. If anyone comments just say it's so nice to be out of the house, among grown-ups! (and not have any kid goobers on me lol) I doubt anyone will comment.
Have fun!
