What Do You Wash Your Child's Hair With?

My 5-year old daughter has long, straight, really thick hair that I loave. My only problem is that it has been hard to find a shampoo that works for her hair. I would love to continue getting a no tears formula because I like to let it soak on her hair but I've come to find out that most of the no-tear shampoos really do not make her hair look good. She really needs a good conditioning shampoo and conditionaer for her hair. I don't want to spend a huge amount of money on it but I want it to do a decent job so her hair doesn't stay tangly. What shampoos can you recommend/do you use?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

My goodness. I really didn't expect so many good recommendations. It looks like I will have to just try several out to find out which one I like. I've always had really thin hair so her thick hair is definitely something I am not familiar with. She got her daddy's hair. Thanks for all the wonderful suggestions!

I use any shampoo that we have on hand. Usually Suave. But I found that leave-in-conditioner solves my 5 year olds tangle troubles. That has made the biggest difference for us.

Good luck!

Regular (adult) suave shampoo and conditioner. We use the apple kind because we like the smell.
No reason to let the shampoo soak, it just dries out the hair/scalp. The all in one no tear formulas don't really work for thick hair like my DD's, she needs a separate conditioner. We just rinse carefully so it doesn't get in her eyes.
Good luck.

My daughters don't have thick hair, but I really like Suave 2 in 1 SMOOTHERS. Then I just brush it before and after bath and it keeps her hair nice and smooth. Almost too smooth, actually, it's hard to get a ponytail or anything to stay in her hair! Another thing I like about Suave is that it's cheap! And it's no tears, too.

My daughter has long thin, very tangly hair and it was always a nightmare! I have been using suave 2 in 1 smoothers (the ones lately have a smurf on the front) and it really has helped! Her hair gets clean and not a tangle anywhere! It rinses clean and I would give it a shot!

You need to wash and condition her hair, towel dry, then use a real good not cheap salon detangler spray leave in conditioner, it will work wonders. I use a product I buy at the drug store or beauty shop called 10 it is in a purple spray bottle, expensive but it lasts a long time for one person using it. No frizz, my hair is also long, curly and very thick.

Fructis by Garnier - the blue dot one. LOVE it. My daughter's hair turns out horribly with the baby shampoos. I think those work when they have NO hair!

Suave sleek works great. We used to use the matrix sleek & tried the suave b/c its soooo much cheaper & it works just as good. Also, we only wash our hair every other time. Just condition in between washes. Too much washing dries hair out. It works great for us. Good luck:)

My daughter has long straight hair down past her bottom. We use Suave all in one shampoo, Suave de-tangler, and between shampoos I massage Aragon Oil from half way down the hair shaft (start at shoulders) to the ends.

I also braid her hair every night before bedtime.

I hope this helps.

My daughter has thick hair with a bit of wave in it, and she's 4. I use tear-free shampoo but not baby shampoo. I like California Baby shampoee (tea tree w/lavendar) a lot. It's kind of expensive, but you just need a little so it lasts a very long time. You can get it at Target. I also like Circle of Friends brand tearless Swimmer's clarifying shampoo, which is available at Cool Cuts 4 Kids or Ulta. The other one I use sometimes is Sprouts brand shampoos, and I often use the Sprouts brand leave in conditioner regardles sof the shampoo brand that I use. It makes it much easier to comb. The Sprouts stuff is a bit pricey, but it lasts a very long time.

For my kids I use Koala Pals from Melaleuca, but their hair isnt thick. I have thick hair and I use Affina from Melaleuca. I love it & it works for me. Here is a link for you to check it out. http://www.melaleuca.com/ProductStore/Content.aspx?Page=A...
They have great products that are competivly priced & better than the store name brands. You have to be a member to shop with them, BUT they are offering $1 memberships through the 15th of March. Best part is all of thier products come with a 60 day empty bottle money back guarentee! even your $1 memebership is refundable for 4 months.

Another great shampoo is Sei Bella, its thier luxury hair care, which is a little more. I have not personally used it yet, I will be switching when i run out of my Affina, but i have a couple friends who use it and LOVE it, they even use it on their daughters unruly thick curls and it works miracles. Thick hair dries in 1/2 the time with this. heres the link for that one
http://www.melaleuca.com/SeiBella/Content.aspx?Page=Luxur...
hope this helps! if you want to try it let me know and i can help you get set up. have a great day! ~ S.

If the toxins in shampoos/conditioners do not concern you (http://www.ewg.org/skindeep), then Infusium is my favorite. I have very thick straight hair and it has always been the best of the shampoos/conditioners I have found. I also used it on my daughter when she was 4/5.

We are now trying to remove as many toxins as possible from our daily lives (the ones we can control) so we're trying out natural shampoos now. So far I haven't been happy with any of them. I'm going to keep looking though.

Most of the week, I use Pert. At least once a week I use Dove Shampoo and Conditioner (which is what I use). My daughter is 4 and has super curly hair. It's about midway down her back, but as she says, it "jumps up" to her shoulders. So, it tangles. We use a de-tangle spray to get it de-tangled.

Based on what everyone else is saying, I wish I knew how to french braid! I would do that in heartbeat if I knew how!

You've gotten lots of recommendations so this is just an FYI on "tear free" shampoos. The ingredient that makes the shampoo "tear free" is formaldehyde.

God's Grace to you,

Comb her hair with a wide-toothed comb before she washes her hair. Hair tends to break easily when it's combed wet.

Kids with thick hair tend to comb once or twice and miss the snarls underneath. Comb the hair well before it gets washed.

I like the shampoos from Trader Joe's or Melaleuca. Alcohol in hair products/gels are drying.

Wash and rinse the hair. Leave the conditioner on for a minute or two, not the shampoo. Rinse the hair in cool water for a nice, shiny look. My friend braids her daughter's hair every night after it is combed out. It helps with the tangle issue.

Unless she gets very sweaty (summer, etc)- She shouldn't wash her hair more than 2 or 3 times a week. Otherwise, the natural oils will be stripped.
I have our ends trimmed every 6 - 8 wks to avoid split ends and look healthy.

I use Dove moisturizing shampoo on myself and sometimes DD. Often she's just washed with Aveeno still, because it works. We use Dove moisturizing conditioner for us both. We also use Suave detangler when necessary. DD has long, curly hair.

When SD was little, we would wash her hair and then braid it for nighttime. It helped the tangles.

I use what ever I am using on the kids hair. Pantene, Finess, Dove, any regular shampoo will work on her hair.

By the way, baby shampoo is for baby hair. Usually by the time they hit one it is not working well on their hair. Baby hair is very much different that big kids hair and adult hair. It makes their hair nappy feeling, like fabric that has a nap and you are rubbing it the wrong way.

She needs regular shampoo now. If you want to treat her let her smell and then pick out one of the Suave or Breck brands at Walmart. I tease our boy that the monkey one (coconut) is turning him into a monkey boy.

The love them and they smell nice. I do use a conditioner on the girls hair because it is waist length.

I use the same stuff on my kids' hair that I use on mine. All those tear frees always left this dull film and made their hair nasty to deal with. I also find the same issue with combo shampoo/conditioners in one. We also have allergies in the house and there were lots of reactions to them. We use the Trader Joe's brand which is something like Orange and Grapefruit. It's got a more natural ingredient list. You don't need to let the shampoo sit in the hair. I let conditioner sit a minute or so but not very long at all. Make sure to get it all rinsed out.
If you don't have one yet go get a wide tooth comb and comb out the hair when it's wet with that comb. Makes it easier to deal with. Also, have her brush her hair before washing it and don't rub it, more massage it so you don't put a bunch of tangles in it while washing it.

Tangly hair... can also occur because it is too dry and washed too much... or because it has split-ends. So trim her hair ends regularly.

I like the Garnier Fructis products for my daughter's hair. I use the leave in hair conditioner/cream. It does not feel greasy, takes out the tangles and makes the hair smooth and soft and easily brushed.
This brand makes good hair products.

For shampoo, my kids use the Suave "Smoothers" 2-in-1 shampoo/conditioner.

Also, when drying her hair after washing, only blot dry. Do not "rub" hair vigorously... or it will tangle, more.

Lots of shampoos, and especially if you are shampooing her hair everyday... it will dry out the hair. There is no reason, to "soak" the shampoo on her hair. It will dry it out.

Hair does not need to be washed everyday. It will strip the hair/scalp of its natural oils. Making hair drier and tangly.

I like to use Fairy Tales hair care products on my daughter's hair. They have a no-tears formula, and the products leave her hair nicely conditioned/tangle-free (and nice-smelling, too). They are not expensive, and if you buy online they almost always have coupon codes.

I use Paul Mitchell chlorine removal after each time my kids swim.. Or Paul mitchell regular and detangler conditioner. I also like biolage. I buy it on sale at utla beauty.. Printable coupons on their web site. A little goes a long ways. If u are worried about it getting in her eyes have her slip on her swim goggles. The tear free shampoo doesn't work or clean good enough for my girls who are 6 and 9.

Dove Moisturizing and Garnier Fructese Moisturizing are what works for my daughters, thick, course, curly hair. I use it occasionaly, but it sort of weighs my fine straight hair down.
